Crosstraining in the Rain I have decided to take up swimming in the mud puddles in my backyard for cross training since trying to ride outside is useless right now. If public pools can charge $4 for a visit, surely I can get $2 to help support Southeastern Cycling.

Monsoon Season-Trish's Rant Ok, WHO TOLD MOTHER NATURE THAT JUNE WAS !*!*!*!*!*! MONSOON SEASON IN GEORGIA? Please step forward, the village would like to stone you. I've gotten rained on every day that I have ridden my new bike (except for last Tuesday at the crit). June is supposed to be dry, not rainy. Sunday: Rain in the gaps, Monday: Drizzle on my recovery ride, Tuesday: Dry, Wed.: Pouring Rain at L5 Flyers ride, Thursday: Pouring Rain at the Bellyache, Friday (off, of course it didn't rain), Sat.: Pouring rain during the entire 3 hour ride, Sunday: Drizzled (ok, while we were at lunch, but I had the bike in my car!) . STOP RAINING!!! I want to be able to enjoy a ride with a dry chammy, a clean bike, and nothing spraying up and getting into my eyes.

7-7-2004 Sope Creek Alert! From SORBA: "Action Alert! The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has released the Draft General Management Plan (GMP) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA). Dates for the public meetings have already passed, and written comments are due by July 30, 2004. Time is short! SORBA has been working with the NPS for nearly 15 years maintaining the only bicycle trail in the system, which is within the Sope Creek / Cochran Shoals unit. As most cyclist who have ridden there are aware, this trail was never designed as a sustainable cycling trail and has only limited appeal, yet still remains popular because it is the only option in the area. Although the preferred alternative in the GMP (called the 'Centralized Access' alternative) does leave open the possibility of expanding trails within certain areas of the Park, (primarily Sope Creek) the overall plan falls significantly short of providing needed opportunities for bicycling in most of the remainder of the suitable and desirable locations. In particular, Vickery Creek, Gold Branch, Island Ford, and Bowmans Island units are all recommended as 'Urban Primitive' designations, which specifically prohibit any kind of bicycle access (paved or primitive trails). Primitive (natural surface) hiking trails are acceptable however. The Settles Bridge unit is recommended as a 'Pristine River Zone', which is even more restrictive than the Urban Primitive. SORBA feels there are two significant problems with the GMP. First is the  prohibition against bicycle access in the Urban Primitive areas, and second, is the use of this designation for the majority of the units within the system. Both together significantly limit the future of bicycle access to our Park! In addition, there is language in the GMP that implies, without any factual support, that bicycles are inherently more problematic than foot traffic on natural surface trails.

What you need to do! Write a letter! Send your comments to the address below. Make sure you mention:
- the needs of Metro Atlanta area cyclists,- that this is YOUR recreation area,- that the NPS is obligated to provide nature-based recreation opportunities for all local residents, not just hikers,- that off-road cycling is an important, popular, low-impact, and environmentally friendly activity,- that off-road cycling has been proven to have no more impact on properly designed trails than foot travel (refer to IMBA resources at http:..www.imba.com/resources/science/index.html,- that language implying negative impacts by cycling should be removed form the EIS (or should be compared equally to hiking),- that trails can be shared successfully by all users,- that bicycles should be allowed in Urban Primitive areas where appropriate,
- and that more areas should be considered for Natural Area Recreation Zones.
IMPORTANT!!
In Addition, if you live in a neighborhood adjacent to or close to one of the units of the CRNRA, We need your community support!! Please talk to your neighborhood and community associations and collectively respond to the NPS. Let your neighbors know the consequences of this plan. Remind them that families; children and adults, all enjoy off-road cycling, and that this plan will severely limit these opportunities. Let them know that cycling trails are open for all, and are frequently shared by hikers and runners! If you need talking points, or would like for someone from SORBA to discuss this with your organization, please contact the SORBA staff, or your local chapter officials. We can arrange for a presentation. The Park plan is on-line and can be viewed at: http://www.nps.gov/chat/gmp.htm Written comments (preferred) should be sent to: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area General Management Plan 1978 Island Ford Pkwy Atlanta Georgia 30350. Alternately, you can use: http://www.nps.gov/chat/gmp.htm or email  Chat_gmp@nps.gov. Remember, time is short! Responses are due by July 30, 2004! Thank you, Keith W. McFadden (trails@sorba.org) Director of Land Access, IMBA State Representative"

Bike Fit I've had a lot of questions lately about where to get a bike fit. I sent an email to over a dozen local bike shops. The response rate, honestly, was abysmal. I have to thank Boneshakers, Bicycles South, and Outback Bicycles for contributing to the article. -Bike Fit Article

7-9-2004 More 99x From the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign "Dear ABC Member, Last week, ABC convened an additional meeting with 99x and bicycling leaders in the metro area. At rhe meeting, all parties clarified their concerns, and perspective on resolution of this controversy. It turned out to be a very positive and constructive meeting.Today, I received in writing the final remedial actions agreed to by Mark Renier, General Manager of 99x (WNNX FM) . Below I am listing the specific commitments, and Mark's specific words in quotations. Please forward this good news to all bicycle riders you know!

Final List of Positive Actions Committed by 99x:
1) Drive-time PSA’s for motorist education on cycling safety – 99x will help ABC produce the psa(s) and run 2 in morning, and 2 in evening, for 2 months (August and September 2004)
2) PSA’s for ABC's Share the Road Century – 99x will run psa’s promoting this safety awareness event in September on Labor Day,
3) Billboard message - 99x will provide the use of one prominent billboard near DeKalb County for a minimum of one month., posting a message developed by ABC in our motorist education project.
4) Bumper stickers - 99x will cover the cost of printing 10,000 "share the road" bumper stickers in July 2004.
5) Long-term Collaboration - 99x will seek opportunities to collaborate with the cycling community in coming months and years to raise awareness of bicycling benefits and safety. To this end, 99x will meet again with cycling representatives in March, 2005. The purpose will be to assess progress against goals and to consider future plans.
As discussed at the meeting, 99x has already begun actions to respond to the controversy in making an on-the-air apology, and in running psa's for National Bike to Work Day in May 2004.
Words from Mark Renier, 99x General Manager:
"It is our desire to make aware that the morning show comments did not represent the station or the company. The action points indicate our minimum intentions to continue our support of the cycling community and the issues faced. 99X hopes this concludes the discussions surrounding the end of April comments. We want the cycling community to be confident in the plans and spread the word surrounding the progress that has been made."
I am personally very pleased that we have succeeded in turning a very bad scene into very significant positive motorist awareness activities. It is clear to me at this point that the management at 99x does NOT support anti-bicycling sentiments, and in fact is going to great lengths to show their support for bicycling and bicycle safety. I hope all in the cycling community will now turn to this positive aspect, and work together to maximize this new collaborative relationship we have with 99x. Please spread the word. Also, let me know if you would like to serve on our advisory committee in implementing these actions.Dennis Hoffarth, Executive Director"

Brewery Route on Sat. From Ray Miller of NARC: "I wanted to let everyone know that there will a Road Race ("The Georgia Games") being held this Saturday on most of the 27 and 12 mile BBC route. The races will start at 8 and go to 4 PM. The roads that will be used for the race are: "Old Tennessee", "Olive Vine Church", "Calico Valley", Mt Pleasant Road" and "Richards Road". The start and finish line will be at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church. If you are interesting in racing the road race on Saturday or the Crit. on Sunday (The crit will not be in Bartow County so the BBC course will not be used Sunday.) please go to the Georgia Games Website for information. (http://gagames.kennesaw.edu/sports1.htm ) If you are riding from the Brewery this Saturday please try to not ride on the course. It will not be very safe or comfortable to be on the course when the racers go by. Thanks very much for your help."

7-9-2004/Part 2 Dahlonega Walmart I've received word from two different sources (one that talked to the Dahlonega Walmart management) that cyclists can no longer park in the Walmart parking lot. They have had people using the bathroom in the woods and customers complaining. If ya gotta go, do it out of site or go into a store! Your car may be towed if you park in the Walmart parking lot.

TdF Poetry In today's coverage of the Tour De France, Velonews.com readers sent in some poetry to entertain. Here is some of it.

There once was a rider named McGee
Who hurt his back while on his knee
He was tending a plant
Which means that he can't
Continue his cycling spree

Summer rain falling.
Tires grind seeking friction.
Steel and flesh tangle.

Phonak Tires Flatting
Italian Sprinters Quit
Stage Six Still Goes On.

Sudden spasm drops him
Damn plants! Curse them all!

7-12-2004 YMCA MTB Camp From SORBA-Woodstock: "Our next week of YMCA bike camp starts Monday July 19. Once again we will need volunteers. We plan to ride at Blankets on Wednesday 7/21 and Friday 7/23 and that is when we really need help. We get to the trail about 9:30 and leave around noon. If you can help out those two days let me know and I will send you the details. Thanks for volunteering - we could not do this without our help. John jdhicks3@comcast.net"

Sparse Updates Updates may be a little sparse this week. What doesn't get put up will go up Thursday. Work (yes, I have a job!) is going to keep me busy.

7-15-2004 Large Grant for EPVA "July 14, 2004 East Point Velodrome Association Announces Receipt of Arthur M. Blank Foundation Grant (East Point, GA)— The East Point Velodrome Association (EPVA) is excited to announce that on Monday, July 12 the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation announced an $87,000 grant to help restore the velodrome located in Historic East Point's Sumner Park. The grant brings the velodrome extremely close to the total funds needed to restore the velodrome and resume its community programs. Since the grant must make up a percentage of the money used in the project, the EPVA is now engaged in a final push to raise the money for the remaining amount (estimated to be around $30,000). According to EPVA president, Pete Antonvich, "This grant will help us reach our goal for the immediate need of repairing the velodrome. However, we still need EVERYONE¹s financial support in order to fully fund the repairs of the Dick Lane Velodrome." Once the velodrome is repaired we will be able to continue a wide variety of programs and activities including the Kids Bicycle Little League, children's bike safety rodeos, adult classes and the Velodrome Challenge Series."

Bring out the Squirrels! It's that time of year. The weather is fair, and new riders are out. Please be
mindful of the rules of riding in a group. Check out this article for some helpful hints. Don't be dangerous, don't be a squirrel!

Podium Girl Gone Bad PGGB has her own website now.

Bike Fittings  An addition to the Bike Fit article: "John Green does fittings based on the John Cobb (Lance Armstrong's former aero guru) positioning principles. He specializes in road and triathlon fittings but can also do mountain bike. A fitting is approximate $150 plus the cost of parts. John can be contacted at 404-803-0445 or greensocool@yahoo.com."

Change to Bishop Crit Course! From GeorgiaVelo.com: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to move our crit course for the Bishop Cycling Classic. The new location is at Sandy Creek Park on the north side of Athens. The race flyer has the directions listed on it. If you have any questions, contact Wes at 770.486.9252 or email - wes@georgiavelo.com." According to my source, the course is .6 miles of flat terrain with a layout in a "D" formation. Real bathrooms will be available.

Goodbye Tugboat Tyler and Haven Hamilton had to put their dog Tugboat down after they learned he had cancer. Tugboat is known as their "child" in Tyler's diaries on velonews.com. -Cyclingnews.com

Farewell to the Ag Center From Sherr Hall with SORBA. This is a farewell party for the Ag Center trail in Gainesville: "Come out the the Chicopee Ag Center on Saturday, July 24th beginning at 9am for the trail farwell party. We'll have food, sponsors, various rides (including a backwards ride for those who've not tried that before), music and general reminiscing about the trail. It will be a lot of fun. I look forward to
seeing everyone there."

What I Did With My Weekend This is my web page. Occasionally, you will have to put up with my horse stuff. Yes, I'm getting back into riding horses! It's been way too long (SE Cycling isn't going anywhere). Thanks to my best friend, I now ride more than I have in the last few years. This winter I plan to start taking lessons again and maybe doing an occasional show next year. This past weekend I rode Ada, my best friend's new mule. Yes, a mule. Aren't her ears cute? For being a really young, "green" (inexperienced...think Cat. 5) mule, she is a really good girl. She is already going over trot poles and can steer mostly in a straight line.

Ada the Mule and Trish

Mistakes Occasionally, a mistake will pop up on the calendar at the top of the page and the calendar on the Calendar page. If you see one, please email me! Thanks to DH for emailing me about one he caught. I don't have time to check all of the promoters web pages monthly for updates. The calendar is usually finalized on SE Cycling in March.

7-18-2004 Tyler Hamilton Foundation Benefit I have to admit that I didn't go to any of the local races this weekend. I needed to do some long, slow rides to work on my endurance, which has been lacking lately. I did, however, attend the Tyler Hamilton Benefit at the Perimeter Point movie theater. The THF had 2 theaters full of rabid cycling fans (probably several hundred people) cheering on the favorites as the went up the Plateau de Beille. People were sitting in the aisles and on the floor. What a great stage! Mayo in trouble, Tyler pulls out, and Lance's victory over Ivan. Everyone cheered when Lance won. I will try to find out how many people were there and how much was raised.

Notice Anything Different? Notice anything different about Southeastern Cycling? Our new logo! I finally have a professionally done logo. I will have tshirts and other items available soon with the new logo! Let me know what you think!

Silver Comet News The PATH Foundation reports that the Silver Comet will be finished to downtown Cedartown by Labor Day. From their newsletter: "Without an abandoned rail bed, it has been difficult to piece together land for a linear park and trail into the heart of Cedartown. /snip/ Much of the trail close to Cedartown will wind through tree-canopied woodlands within sight of Tanyard Branch and Cedar Creek. Shady, creekside meadows abound, beckoning trail users to picnic or just relax among the natural settings. Two new bridges and an underpass under SR 100 will provide a seamless, ten-mile ride from the bustling downtown business district and the new Cedartown depot to the Alabama border. Soon, the Chief Ladiga Trail will be completed to the state line, creating a 45-mile-long trail from Cedartown to Anniston, Alabama. The temporary terminus in Cedartown will be the replica of the old Seaboard Railroad Depot used by the Silver Comet train in the sixties. (The original depot was demolished years ago.) The newly constructed depot will house the Main Street Cedartown program, a Silver Comet museum, restrooms and lockers, a lounge for trail users, concessions, and other trail related facilities. Less than nine miles separates the Cedartown depot from the completed Silver Comet Trail west of Rockmart."

Arabia Mountain PATH Trail A new trail in Dekalb County has been opened. Almost 5 miles of trails that wind through protected park land make up the Arabia trail. From PATH: "The event will celebrate the opening of almost five miles of trail, connecting the historic City of Lithonia to the new Stonecrest Mall and Arabia Mountain Park. Construction will begin next month on an additional three mile segment of the trail between Evans Mill Road and Murphey Candler School on Klondike Road. When completed, the Arabia Mountain Trail system will be twenty miles long connecting DeKalb, Henry, and Rockdale counties, Panola Mountain State Park, City of Lithonia, and the emeging residential communities around Stonecrest Mall. This trail is much different than the Silver Comet Trail. The Arabia trail rolls with the hills and winds through the woods. It will likely be the trail of choice for family rides to enjoy the great outdoors rather than training rides for avid cyclists. It will offer everyone an escape from city sights and sounds as it weaves through the natural showcase of the Arabia Mountain Heritage "

French Broad Janet Trubey, the promoter of the French Broad Cycling Classic, says that the race flyer is up. Several changes are in store including a new crit location and a new road race course.

MTB for Sale Chance Regina (Cycleworks) is selling his 2000 Cannondale Scalpel mountain bike. Components include an XTR wheelset, new XTR cranks and bottom bracket, Easton Carbon Monkey Light Bars, XTR chain, new XT cassette. The bike does not have a Lefty fork. The price is $1800. Email Chance at chance.regina@specialized.com for more information.

7-19-2004 Brewery Parking This is from Jo Ann of NARC regarding parking at the Bud Plant/Cartersville Brewery (Brewery or "White" Ride) "After last Wednesday's ride, John Brickman, from the brewery came over and spoke to a few of us about parking and bicycling issues. He was very nice and
I believe is one of the many employees that think it's nice that we feel comfortable and safe parking at the brewery. However, there are still a few problems. I will try to get something in writing to pass out to others not on our email list, but in the meantime please pass these rules/warnings on to other cyclists you know that park at the brewery. No urinating in the parking lot behind trees, bushes or otherwise. Two cyclists have been caught on camera, one male and one female. Do not leave any trash behind. Do not hang clothes on the fence to dry. Please be discreet in changing clothes. The sport kilts have been noted by security and are approved."

October Green Tour?? Does anyone know what this is about? The Green Tour. A Cycle Sandy Springs Race and Ride. The Prettiest and Greenest Urban Ride in America. Sandy Springs/Atlanta, GA. It's on October 16 and looks like it is being promoted by Gobike/Gene Dixon. http://www.gobike1.com/greentour/

Avondale Women's Ride? I've heard there is a casual women's ride that goes out of Avondale Pizza on Fridays. Does anyone have any info on it? I want to add it to the ride calendar. Email me.

New Logo Thanks for all of the compliments on the new logo! The graphic artist will love to hear them!

Covington I've had a few inquires about the Covington Race, I mean Covington Century. The entry and info. is up on active.com. Search for Covington Century.

I NEED REPORTS!! Race report submissions have dropped off a LOT from last year! I need articles, race reports, photos, submissions, ANYTHING! I cannot be everywhere all the time. Southeastern Cycling has a very underpaid staff of one (me, I make nothing on this site! It barely pays for itself through donations...and thank you to those that have donated!). I need help. Email me with anything to post.

7-20-2004 OWWWWWWW!!!!! Thanks to DS and JG that stopped with me tonight after my fall tonight at the crit. It's nice to know someone was there to make sure I was ok. Cyclists are great people!
Someone crossed wheels with someone ahead of me, and 4 or 5 of us went flying. I would have been ok, but a rider behind me crossed my rear wheel and forced me up onto the curb from what I've been told. I don't really remember how I fell. I landed in the grass on my right shoulder and head. I felt my brain slam against my skull. My helmet is cracked in several different places. WEAR YOUR HELMET! Bruises are already forming on my back. I have one h*ll of a headache and will be VERY sore for a few days. It feels like I have whiplash in my neck, and my right shoulder feels like I've been playing center tackle on a football team. Amazingly enough, I have no road rash. My bike is fine, just a little scraped up and needs a visit to the shop for a little TLC. I'm happy to say that everyone else involved was also alright, just some road rash and sore elbows.

Anniston SERC Race David Berger, promoter for the Anniston SERC AMBC race, wanted me to pass on two bits of information. The start times are Central time. (Atlanta is Eastern time). Also, the course has been shortened to 5 miles, and the number of laps has been adjusted for some groups. Check the Gone Riding website for more information.

This is certainly not something we like doing but the choices were a sub-standard event or postponement. We can either apply your entry to another event or credit your charge card for the registration amount. Please email
staff@gobike1.com to let us know your preference."

7-26-2004 Anniston SERC Race For those that do not do the SERC races promoted by Gone Riding, you are missing out! They are well organized, quick with results, the courses run as posted, and done in a very timely fashion. The Northeast Alabama Bicycle Club helped to put on the Cheaha Mountain Express at Cheaha State Park. (Yes, that Cheaha Mountain that is part of the Cheaha Challenge in the spring.) The course is one of the rockiest in the area. The Relentless Singletrack hill took many victims, including myself. I did not stay for awards, but I heard several Georgia riders did well.

Stuff for Sale There is lots of stuff for sale! I just added some cheap jerseys. Check out the sales list.

Go Lance! I couldn't let the Tour De France go by without saying. Wow! Lance was awesome. The Postal boys dominated everything, controlled many stages, and delivered the Boss to Tour Win #6. See coverage at Cyclingnews.com and Velonews.com. Like me and don't have OLN? Check out the video clips at the Official Le Tour website. I recommend using the bandwidth at work to view the 300K files.

Tour de l'Abitibi The Tour de l'Abitibi wrappged up Sunday in Canada. It is the only UCI stage race for Juniors in North America. Congratulations guys!

7-28-2004 Bonjour Will! Est Jean-Marie et Will dans le maison? (Are Jean-Marie and Will in the house)? I love this photo from cyclingnews.com of Jean-Marie Leblanc, director of the Tour De France, and Will Smith, movie star.

NARC News The North Atlanta Racing Club members have been going to races throughout the state. See what they've been up to

SC Bike Lanes The Greenville News profiled the addition of bike lanes to some SC roads.

This Weekend This weekend is the French Broad Cycling Classic in Asheville featuring a new road race course and a new crit course. The venerable Covington Century will be this weekend in Covington. Pre-registration is open, and day of registration is $35. Does anyone else find that a bit high for a century? $25 to me seems pretty reasonable.

7-30-2004 Trish's Rant Ah, I haven't ranted in a while. Off I go. Disagree with me? Email me

Top 6 Things that I hate about the Buckhead Bellyache

1. People that blatantly ride over the double yellow line, especially on a very curvy road. Bye bye stupid. The SUV got ya! I hope you have good health insurance because the accident will have been your fault.

2. The rider that tries to pass a slower rider on the right in a turn and nearly takes them out.

3. People that expect you to give them both of your tubes because they flatted but do not bother to carry a pump or spare tube with them or a cell phone to call for a ride. Now, I have no problem giving a tube to someone that has flatted and gone through their tube or CO2 or for a second flat. Sometimes things cannot be helped, and it is good karma and just being nice if you help out those in distress. It will come back to you 10 fold. Being completely unprepared is different. Everyone should at least carry a spare tube and CO2 or a pump. If you are riding a $2000 bike or even a $600 bike, you can afford the $20 for the two aforementioned items. You don't need to carry a full tool kit with you on a road ride, but be prepared for the most common mechanical--a flat tire. It is helpful if you know how to change your tire. If I can do it, anyone can do it!

4. People that cannot hold a line, come into your "ride space," nearly knock you over, and then yell at you like you did something wrong. If you cannot hold a line, you have no business being in a group ride. PERIOD. I don't care if you are Mr. Cat 1 Bad-Arse roadie or the new dude on a hybrid. It's not that we don't like you, but it's for everyone's saftey. The SBL has some great rides that are geared for beginners that will help teach you what group riding is about.

5. Riding without a helmet. I guess it still isn't cool for some people. I guess they did not see me get taken out at the crit two weeks ago (no, the accident was not my fault!) and land directly on my head. My lovely new Pneumo was cracked in 4 different places. The mild concussion and whiplash I suffered were nothing compared to what would have happened if I had not been wearing my helmet. I guess it just is not cool to wear a helmet.

6. The slow, fat chick that keeps getting in everyone's way. Wait a second, that's me. Never mind.

Be real, ya'll, it's a ride, not a race. Play it safe, so that you can come out and have a good ride again the next week. I don't think anyone wants to see someone get hurt.

Living Wills Ken Rosskopf, the Bicycling Lawyer from Atlanta, has written a great article on living wills in Velonew's Legally Speaking column.

The New Logo The mystery artist of the new Southeastern Cycling logo is none other than Lee Boatright. Many know Leebo for his advocacy work in the 99X situation as well as being the ride leader of the Coffee and Bagel. The "C&B" starts every Saturday at 9 am near the Marietta Square with ride options of 28, 40, and 50 miles. The route is marked, and cue sheets are available. There is usually a nice variety of paces, so everyone can find someone to ride with. Thanks Lee!
