Would you buy photos? A few recent discussions got me thinking. SE Cycling is always in need of money to pay hosting bills! As ya'll know, I enjoy doing this site, but I do it all in my free time. There is no paid staff, no paid writers, etc. I hate doing trailwork, I already volunteer at a few events per year, blah, blah. This site is my way of giving back. So, would you, faithful reader, buy photos that I've taken at the TdG to benefit SE Cycling? Postage would be included. All monies after expenses would go into the SE Cycling fund. Some photos can be seen at cyclingnews.com Stage 6 and Stage 7. I will have about 100 up here next week. All prints would be done from the high resolution photos, not the smaller files posted on the web page. Please vote!

Free VO2Max Testing "Get paid for training you already do! Matt Ganio is looking for 10 male cyclists to complete a study investigating the effect of fluid ingestion during prolonged cycling on VO2max. The testing is for completion of my master's degree at UGA. Testing will take place this summer, starting in mid-May and lasting through the beginning of August. Testing would require you to come to Exercise Physiology lab once a
week for 5 weeks in a row. There is flexibility with this to accommodate race schedules, vacations, etc. Three sessions will take 3.5 hours of your time. The other two will take 1.5 and 2.5 hours. Each cyclist will ride for up to two hours in 86 degrees F with a strong fan blowing on you the whole time. During some sessions you receiving PowerAde to drink. After your ride, you will complete a VO2 max test to determine the
effect of fluid ingestion during the ride. Each rider will receive $100 for completion of the study and valuable
physiological data that you can use in your training. This includes your VO2max (approximately $300 value) in a variety of conditions, an estimate of your lactate threshold (along with your heart rate at the intensity), and
your sweat rate (and other data about how your body responds to dehydration). Each subject will also be able to do a free VO2max test later in the year to monitor their training progression.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this study. The information I'm  trying to gather could have big implications for your sport. Please let me know if there is a possibility of you being able to take a part in this
study or if you have any further questions. Thanks! Matt Ganio, Graduate Student in Exercise Physiology, University of Georgia, Mstueck@uga.edu"

5-4-2004 Roswell Results ROSWELL, GA (May 2, 2004) – Despite overcast skies and sometimes wet, windy conditions, over 4,000 spectators braved the chilly spring weather to watch the professional and
amateur bicycle races at the 3rd annual Nalley Lexus Historic Roswell Criterium today. Dahlonega's Tina Pic, riding for the Genesis Scuba/FFCC women's cycling team, won her third consecutive Nalley Lexus criterium. In the final of seven races, Greg Henderson (New Zealand), of the HealthNet Pro Cycling presented by MAXXIS team, won the Men's Pro 1 event.

With over 350 elite racers from across the U.S. and abroad, several local athletes fared well at this year's Nalley Lexus Historic Roswell Criterium. In the Men's Category 2/3 race, all three podium finishers were from Georgia. Creed Sewell (Atlanta, Ga.) of Trek VW Freeflight won the race, followed by Larry Waters (Cumming, Ga.) of Nalley Lexus in second and Reid Peacock (Decatur, Ga.) of Nalley Lexus in third. In the Men's Category 3 / 4 race won by David Banks of NZ Standard, second place was won by Wesley Garland (Marietta, Ga.) of Nalley Lexus and third was won by Chad Arnholt (Athens, Ga.) of the John Deere team.

"I did the (Dodge) Tour de Georgia and to be honest it's taken five or six days to recover. Once you come into form like that, you're real strong," said Henderson, a two-time Olympian for New Zealand and winner of 7 World Cup Track gold medals. He was part of a four-man break that lasted over half of the 80-minute race, and then sprinted past Thad Dulin (Clemson, SC) of the Colavita Olive Oil pro cycling team in the final lap. "Coming from a track background, I was pretty sure I was going to stay away. I was confident that I'd be able to take him (Dulin) in a jump. That's pretty much what I did at the finish, I made sure to slow the sprint down as much as I possibly could. I did the (Dodge)"

In addition to the professional races, close to 110 children participated in youth races and the Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell and Harry's Farmers Market. All children received medals, t-shirts and special prizes following the popular Shimano Youth Series/ RBC Centura Kids Races, for all children ages five to 12. All proceeds from this year's event benefited the Roswell Recreation Association. The Roswell Recreation Association was formed in the early 1950's and has recently helped to fund the purchase of property for the Roswell Area Park and Grimes Bridge Park.

3 State, 3 Mountain Challenge This is a fantastic century! Three climbs...Suck Creek Mtn. is about 7.5 miles but not as hard as any of the Gap climbs (maybe like Woodys going up the long way), Burkhalter Gap (steep as Hogpen but only 2.5 miles), and Sand Mountain (4 miles, as steep as Neels but with some
switchbacks). The ride isn't as challenging as 6 Gap, but it is incredibly well organized with HUGE rest stops. Coming back into Chattanooga, they had one lane closed off for cycling traffic only with school crossing guards and the police stopping all traffic when a cyclist came though. The small A pack came in at
about 4:49 including one two minute stop, which was one minute later than last year. All in all, a great ride. -Chattanooga Bike Club

Piedmont Park Freeride Trails? From the SORBA Forum: "To all Atlanta in-towners: Efforts are underway to develop the "North Woods", the City-owned land extending north from the doggie park to Ansley Mall. This 50-acre area has excellent potential for trails! A North Woods Advisory Committee is currently developing a master plan for this area, and they need to hear from you. Contact me and tell me what part of town you live in. I'll get you in touch with the right person on the Committee. - tom" (Trish's note: He didn't give a contact email address)

Stonewall Trail Closed  From another SORBA Forum post: "According to the Forest Service, the Stonewall Trail will be closed Monday thru Saturday for the next SEVEN weeks. The Forest Service is allowing the Georgia Transmission Corporation to install electrical transmission lines thru this beautiful forested land. Way to protect those forest! Maybe the EMF will take care of the Pine Beetles." (Trish's note: See the forum for the rest of the discussion.)

"A portion of the Stonewall Falls Mountain Bike Trail will be reloacted to avoid impacts from the trasmission line ROW. A relocated route results in fewer ROW corridor crossings than the existing bike trail (Final EA, Figure 22). The Forest Service will make a final and separate decision regarding the relocated route and trail design at a later time, which will be funded from a trust account established by GTC."

5-11-2004 New Vinings Traffic Light From one of my regular tidbit contributors. There is a new traffic light on Paces Ferry Rd. This is a popular route with weeknight rides that start in Buckhead (Peachtree Bikes, Peachtree Battle, Bellyache, etc.). The light is just after you turn right on Paces Ferry from Cumberland Pkwy (past Home Depot). The Cobb Police said that there have been 3 bike/car accidents since the light was
put up, all coming from that direction.

Lower Turner Creek Closed From SORBA: "At the request of the USFS, the lower ‘bike only’ section of the Turner Creek trail (part of the Bull/Jake system) is closed until the bridge can be replaced. The current bridge is in pretty sad shape and has been deemed a safety hazard. Replacement should take place within the next couple of months. We are still not sure if this will be a SORBA or USFS project. You can still ride the entire trail, just use the double-track at the lower end. Also, be aware that the upper bridge is also in need of repair, so be careful riding this section (it will remain open). SORBA will be doing this as soon as we can arrange a workday."

5-12-2004 Circle the Bald On April 24, the first annual Circle the Bald ride was held in Towns County, Georgia.. This event was coordinated by the Southern Appalachian Bicycle Association (SABA), who are members from the North Georgia, Southwestern North Carolina and Southeastern Tennessee area. Proceeds from this ride will benefit the planning and development of the Jackrabbit Mountain Bike and Hiking Trail, which will be located in Clay County, North Carolina, near the town of Hayesville. This is located on the North Carolina-Georgia border, off a peninsula of beautiful Lake Chatuge. Approximately 14-15 miles of trail are planned, with 7-8 of this being a perimeter trail along the lakeside, and an additional 6-7 miles of connecting and ridge-line trails. -Full Report

More Cyclist Bashing in GA From the North Fulton Bicycle Users Group and David Crites:
Subject: FW: AJC North Fulton/Forsyth May 11 -- Bicyclists... Food Chain Of the Road

The following cut-and-pasted "Food Chain" piece from the AJC's North Fulton/Forsyth bureau probably does not need to be blown into as big deal as the 99X issue. It should not go unchallenged either.

I sent letter to the AJC's North Fulton/Forsyth Editor, Public Editor, and Publisher objecting to the incendiary tone of the piece (implies coercion and harm toward cyclists and pedestrians). It also includes misinformation (the Georgia Legal Code does in fact allow cycling two abreast; I was careful to point out that most cyclists are very courteous and make efforts to quickly facilitate motor vehicles passing when and where that is a safe maneuver). I also included a paragraph on all the positive transportation, environment, recreation, and fitness/health aspects of bicycling. The GEORGIA BIKES! President sent a similar letter to the detective
copying two Fulton County Commissioners.

"Bicyclists: A reminder of the food chain of the road

The Tour de Georgia was exciting and everyone enjoyed it. Remember, bicyclists, don't get too cocky. I see you out there two and three abreast with 15 cars behind you. Don't forget the food chain of the
road. 1. Big trucks 2. Trucks 3. Cars 4. Geo Metros 5. Motorcycles 6. Bicycles 7. Humans 8. Dogs 9. Raccoons 10. Possums 11. Those two stupid chickens in Forsyth County who weren't as fast
as I thought. Don't ride two- and three-wide because you are just one "road rage" incident away from that yellow shirt in the sky. Be careful. I ride on the weekend when I can. I do have one complaint. I don't like to
wear the yellow, red and white Spandex things. And I hate the helmets. Don't get me wrong. I see the need for them. It's the design that's not my cup of tea. Why does it have to be pointed in the back? I prefer an old hockey helmet. Seems to back people off a bit."

5-18-2004 Final Word on 99X Debacle? The League of American Bicyclists and the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign have met with both the head of the Susquehanna Radio Corporation and 99x management. An agreement has been reached to promote bicycle safety and air public service announcements on 99x. This is the text of an email I received today from the LAB as part of their mailing list.

CYCLISTS AND ATLANTA RADIO STATION RESOLVE DISPUTE OVER INFLAMMATORY
BROADCAST

Bicyclists in Atlanta and the management of WNNX-FM (99X) and its parent company Susquehanna Radio Corp. have agreed on a course of action to diffuse tensions following a broadcast on the Don Miller show, Friday, April 23 in which the hosts made dangerous and disparaging remarks about bicyclists. The actions include disciplinary action against the hosts of the show, an on-air apology, and the broadcasting of a series of public service announcements promoting bicycle safety. The agreement was hastened by a local and national
outcry from bicyclists and pressure on the parent company of WNNX and Susquehanna. “Once again,
bicyclists reacted with fury to a mindless attack on our right to the road and our safety,” said Andy Clarke, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists. Atlanta-area cyclists and cyclists from around the nation used the League’s Online Advocacy Center at http://www.bikeleague.org to listen to the broadcast
and write to WNNX and Susquehanna executives to criticize the broadcast. Joe Stafford, the Executive Director of the Bicycle Access Council in Pennsylvania (http://www.bicycleaccess-pa.org) and a member of the League board, lives near Susquehanna’s corporate headquarters in York, PA. He set up a meeting on May 5 with David Kennedy, President/Chief Operating Officer of Susquehanna that resulted in a swift and
strong statement (http://www.bikeleague.org/mediacenter/quickresponse.htm) from the company condemning the content of the broadcast. The letter to the League said, "All of our Senior Managers have been apprised of
the issues raised by this incident and directed to convey to the individual stations that such material will not be tolerated by our stations." The League will work with Susquehanna to deliver a series of PSA promoting
safe bicycling and sharing the road on Susquehanna radio stations nationwide. The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign
(http://www.atlantabike.org), on behalf of its members and the North Georgia Bicycle Dealers Association
(http://www.bike4fun.com), Georgia Bikes! (http://www.georgiabikes.org), other bicycling organizations, and cyclists across north Georgia, met with Mark Renier, Senior Vice President/General Manager of 99X on May 7. Dennis Hoffarth, Executive Director of the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, said the groups are pleased with the outcome of the meeting and are already working with the station to deliver accurate and positive messages about bicycling on the air. The 99X hosts have apologized on air and 99X will air a series of public service announcements (PSA) to promote safe bicycling, National Bike MonthTM (http://www.bikemonth.com), and sharing the road (including ABC's Share the Road Century in September). Other promotional efforts are
also being considered. To listen to segments of the offending broadcast, a chronology of events related to the WNNX broadcast, and the responses of the Susquehanna Radio Corporation, please visit

5-25-2004 Cherokee Bike Shop Ride Update From Corey Bobo, the ride leader: "Our Thursday Night "King of the Mountains" competition at Cherokee Bike Shop is really picking up momentum. Thomas Turner gathered up the lion's share of the points on our first night, although Shane Schreihart was there to
keep him honest. We've had a few changes to our original format. We're going to award points to the top three riders over each climb - 1st = 3pts, 2nd = 2pts, 3rd = 1pt. We've also changed our starting time to a prompt 6:30. Kevin at Cherokee Bike Shop was also able to score a few official Nike Polka Dot Jerseys from Trek to give away to the series winners. These are not cheap knock offs, they're the real thing. This is turning into a really hard, but fun training ride. Best of all, it's all free. DLV News East Point Velodrome Association Announces New Web Address
(East Point, GA)—The East Point Velodrome Association announced today a new website address. “savedlv.org” has been acquired by the EPVA for use in promotional items, bumper stickers, and future publications. EPVA President Pete Antonvich explains why the EPVA chose the new site name: “Renewed interest in the Dick Lane Velodrome and our increased marketing efforts needed to save the facility brought to our attention that most people don’t know how to spell “velodrome,”. so we decided that the "www.saveDVL.org" web address was needed.” This new website address will allow the EPVA to create more visible and effective advertising, and be easier for those not familiar with the velodrome to remember. The old website address, www.dicklanevelodrome.com, will also remain as an active address because of the many organizations and private webpages that have active links to the EPVA.
