10-1-2004 Athens Ride Maps/WBL From the Winter Bike League: We've gone and done it. The WBL has signed a 7-figure deal with The University of Georgia Press to print and publish the most extensive book of maps of bicycle rides in and around the Athens area. The maps will be complete with
photos and written directions in addition to the regular mapping. The rides will include evrything from 15-20 mile jaunts all the way up to 110-120 mile treks for the hardcore mileage junkies. The 7-figure deal was reached as a result of The WBL's willingnesss, for the right price, to disclose the whereabouts of its
arcane network of cobwebbed roads. Think about, The WBL will never be able to get anyone lost on a ride again. Shed a tear for a Bobby D. said, "The times they are a changing." Which brings us at The WBL to our next point: We are now soliciting suggestions for your favorite ride. All rides will be named in honor of someone or something. For example, Alto will always be known as "The Porterfield Tire Alto
Loop." If you make a submission, please do so to me at this address. You may send the info as an attachment. Please include the best written directions you can (we may edit), as well as your nomination for the name of the ride. All icons of Athens Cycling (past and present) will have a loop named in his or her honor. We do hope to do an extensive, detailed job. We hope to produce a finished product that will be around for many, man years to come. Preserve yourself in print for posterity. There is no fee for submitting a ride nor any cost to have a ride named after you or your favorite. We do not know the price of the book at this time, but it will relate directly to the printing costs. We want to do a book that is long and thin so it will fit in a jersey pocket. We will seek sponsors to underwrite our printing costs. Sponsors will of course have their names emblazoned in fancy locales throughout the pages. We hope to have the book ready by December 1, 2004, just in time for The WBL 2005.  And finally, regardless of the ultimate cost, all proceeds from all sales will be donated to a charity to be named at a later date. We are also seeking suggestions as to appropriate charities. Athens charities will be given preference. Get to work!"

Greenville News US OLYMPIANS AND US PRO CHAMPIONS TO BATTLE "FALL FOR GREENVILLE" WEEKEND Jonas Carney to Retire From Professional Bicycle Racing Following the 20th Annual Greenville Cycling Classic.

Greenville, SC-Four-time US Olympian, George Hincapie and US Professional Criterium Champion, Jonas Carney will battle it out at the 20th Annual Greenville Cycling Classic in downtown Greenville on
October 9th for the winner's share of the $10,000 cash purse. Once again, Greenville will host some of the southeast's fastest and most exciting bicycle racing action. Hincapie and Carney will join hundreds of
professional and amateur cyclists during fun-filled weekend of  criterium racing.

"We are excited to have Olympic athletes like George Hincapie and Jonas Carney racing in downtown Greenville again," said Rich Hincapie, longtime Greenville Cycling Classic Race Director. "George and Jonas have both represented the US at the Olympics in the past and they are both wrapping of a terrific season in Greenville. Not only is Jonas wrapping up a successful season, but he has also decided to make this year's Greenville Cycling Classic the last professional race of his amazing career. Jonas, George and I used to race together when we were juniors, so he has been a good friend of mine for many years. He will be missed in the pro peleton."

Greenville's very own, George Hincapie will be vying for the victory at the Greenville Cycling Classic on October 9th. Hincapie is one of Lance Armstrong's most trusted lieutenants and the only US Postal Service Team member to assist Lance with all six of his record-breaking Tour de France victories. Hincapie is a four-time US Olympian, former US Professional Road National Champion and one of America's most accomplished one-day classics riders, with victories in several prestigious European professional races. "I love racing and training  in Greenville," commented the nine-time Tour de France participant. "It's a great place to live and there is always a great crowd at the Greenville Cycling Classic."
Jonas Carney is the reigning US Professional Criterium National  Champion and the winner of last year's Greenville Cycling Classic. This former US Olympic team member will be looking to make it two in a row in the streets of downtown Greenville on October 9th. Carney has had a very successful career, with an amazing 8 Junior and 16 Senior National Championships to his credit. He normally ends his racing season in Greenville every year, and he has announced that this year will be his last season in the pro peleton. "I'm psyched to finish my season and my career at the Greenville races this year," said Carney, member of the Jelly Belly Professional Cycling Team. "For most of the last 15 years I have finished my season in Greenville, so it seems appropriate to finish my career there as well. Rich Hincapie, who I have known through racing for 25 years, always  puts on a great event. Greenville will be a great place to celebrate my retirement." Race visitors will be treated to lots of fast-paced cycling action in
the middle of downtown Greenville. The one-mile course will wind its way around the Peace Center for the Performing Arts and include the historic West End of Greenville. Cycling fans can catch all the action
up close by viewing the racing from anywhere along the course. Prime viewing locations will be at the corner of Main Street and Broad Street, Broad Street and River Street, and River Street and Main Street. October 9th and 10th is sure to be an exciting weekend of bicycle  racing action. Races start at 9:00am on Saturday, October 9th, with the day concluding in a 50-lap pro race at 6:00pm for a $10,000 cash purse. The start and finish of all races will be located near the corner of Main Street and Broad Street in downtown Greenville."

Carter's Lake Race Report Here is my Carter's Lake Race Report:
Go off with the first group (Super Sport).
Climb first hill feeling pretty good.
Have fun descending hill.
Climb next short hill.
Start down the next hill and turn left into a small creek crossing. Have rear wheel lock up, make really loud noise, and fall out of drop out. Spend 10 minutes looking at broken rear derailleur and trying to get the chain out of the spokes. Spend another 15 minutes walking back to the car carrying bike in right arm and rear wheel in left hand.
Take bike to Boneshakers and hear that I completely screwed up my rear derailleur hanger  (non replaceable hangar on a custom steel hardtail.) but that they would be able to fix it (Trust me, take your bike to Boneshaker Bicycles in Powder Springs. Randy can fix anything!)
Get road bike out and ride for a few hours to console myself.
End.

Pink Headsets Want a pink Chris King headset and want to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, check this out? Matching hubs and tshirt available upon request. Boneshaker Bicycles already has some on order if you want to pick one up.

10-7-2004 O'Neill to Navigators Georgia Resident Nathan O'Neill (AUS) has signed with the Navigators for 2005.

A DAY OF TREATMENT FOR DREW From Dr. Steve Scala, Chiropractor. Andrew Johnston, an avid and exceptionally accomplished triathlete, was recently diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia. For those of you who know Andrew Johnston, we know that you can understand why we would want to do something special for him. Therefore, on SATURDAY OCTOBER 16, 2004 we are offering treatment at the Soft Tissue & Chiropractic Center in Brookhaven. Each treatment will consist of 10 minutes of one-on-one time with a Doctor who specializes in Active Release Techniques and also a 10-minute stretch with a specialist in Active Isolated Stretching. Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.) is “a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they often result from injury to over-used muscles. Your body produces tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Active Isolated Stretching, the Mattes Method, is described as “…an effective treatment for deep and superficial fascial release, restoring proper fascial planes for optimal physiologic function. Performing an Active Isolated Stretch of no greater than 2.0 seconds allows the target muscle to optimally lengthen without triggering the protective stretch reflex and subsequent reciprocal antagonistic muscle contraction as the isolated muscle achieves a state of relaxation. Maximal beneficial stretch can be accomplished without opposing tension or resulting trauma. Mattes Method myofascial release technique incorporates AIS which uses active movement and reciprocal inhibition to achieve optimal flexibility. Using a 2.0-second stretch has proven to be the key in avoiding reflexive contraction of the antagonistic muscle. Without activating muscle group contraction, restoration of full range of motion and flexibility can be successfully achieved. 100% of the money collected will go towards Andrew’s medical costs.

The treatment will be scheduled in twenty-minute appointment times from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, October 16, 2004. You must book an appointment to receive treatment.
The total cost for the appointment will be $50.00 (and any additional donations would be greatly appreciated also). The location will be: Soft Tissue & Chiropractic Center, 2669 Osborne Road—Suite B, Atlanta, GA 30319, PLEASE CALL (404) 467-1278 TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.

Harbins Park Public Meeting From the SORBA Forums: CONTACT: TAMMY GIBSON
Phone (770) 822-8870 Fax (770) 822-8835 Email: tammy.gibson@gwinnettcounty.com  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 14, 2004  PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED FOR HARBINS/ALCOVY PARK SITE

[Lawrenceville, Ga.] - Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation will hold a meeting on Thursday, October 28, at 7 p.m. for the public to give input on a future park with frontage on both New Hope and Luke Edwards Roads in the Harbins Community. The meeting will be held at the Harbins Elementary School Cafeteria, located at 3550 New Hope Road in Dacula. At the meeting, residents can apply to serve on the Harbins/Alcovy Park Site Steering Committee, a volunteer board that will offer input on the park's master plan. They also will have an opportunity to complete a community recreation interest survey, which will be used to determine what types of amenities may be offered at the park. A site analysis and preliminary history of the park site was discussed at a public meeting held this past July at Harbins Community House. The land is part of the Alcovy River watershed and contains hardwoods, pines, streams, tributaries and a portion of the river. The 2004 Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan recommends the development of both passive and recreational facilities on this site. The current master planning effort is for the passive, Open Space Park portion of the 1,795-acre park property. There are no public facilities on the land as it is not yet open to the public. For more information, please call Rex Schuder at (770) 822-8840. The mission of Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation is to provide quality parks and leisure activities to the citizens of Gwinnett County. www.gwinnettparks.com

Blogging?? I've been asked by a few people if I am going to set up a blog. No. I don't have time. I was blogging before there was such a thing. Ya'll read my ramblings enough to know that I can be very opinionated when I want to be. The only thing Southeastern Cycling lacks besides a search feature is a forum or feedback button. Maybe that would make it a blog. I've always considered my race reports my blog. Maybe I should start posting more about my rides and what I'm up to in order to "keep up with the bloggers." Good idea or bad??

The other half will be used to make sure that bicycle safety law books are provided to every officer at Police and Sheriffs Departments across Georgia. In the long term, we are working on an annual Memorial Century ride, the first of which will be October 9, 2005, that will benefit other families who have lost a loved one to a bicycle-motor vehicle crash, and to promote bicycle safety and awareness.

CX Photos I anticipate taking many, many cyclocross photos. I've decided to use Ofoto to store some of the photos because they are huge. That way if anyone wants to purchase any, they can order directly off of the site. The Ofoto pix are here.

Links to CX Photos Here are some links to CX photos: Rebecca and Drew Graham (Great photos! Drew...where have you been hiding? You are a fantastic photographer!). Also, see the forum at www.georgia-cross.com for links to more photos.

Southeastern Cycling Donations As a reminder, I am taking donations for Southeastern Cycling at all of the cyclocross races. I provide this website for free to the cycling community, but it costs money to register domain names and host it as a business account (too much bandwidth for a personal account!). The hosting bill is paid 3 months at a time, so there is always a need for money. You probably don't want to see this website go away!

Silver Comet Development There was an interesting article from the AJC about development around the Silver Comet.

New Addiction?  Have you tried these new cookies from Pillsbury? Oh my god! They are SO good. They are ready to bake and already cut up. Pop them on a cookie tray, put them in the oven for 15 minutes, and eat! I had to bake something for the guys at work when someone told me about these. I'm sure the guys will like them. Of course, I sampled both the chocolate chip and peanut butter and chocolate chip to make sure they tasted good.

It's Night...Get Some Freaking Lights! Warning, slight rant. I was out tonight about 7:00 finishing up my recovery ride in Buckhead when I saw some riders riding without lights. It was getting dark, and I probably would not have noticed them had I not been looking out for some friends that I knew were riding in the area of Mt. Paran. I have no doubt that cars had problems seeing them. Why take the chance of getting hit? GET SOME FREAKIN LIGHTS! By Georgia state law, you must have a red rear reflector that can be seen for 300 feet and a white light on the front that can be seen for 300 feet. Yeah, yeah, most people take the law when it concerns bicycles with a grain of salt, but it becomes a little more important at night.

For less than $20 you can get a good "blinkie" at any local bike shop. Vistalights are my favorites because they are very bright, cheap, and have 3 modes (steady, flash, and disco). Better yet, get 2. While you are at it, get a headlight, so that cars coming the other way can see you. I have a 10 watt Nightrider that was about $100, but a light that makes you visible is less than $40. Wearing all black or navy blue isn't the brightest idea either--pun intended. I refuse to wear flouresent yellow, but I make sure that I wear a light colored jersey. Do you really want to take the chance of tangling with the cell phone talking, SUV wielding soccer mom that is more concerned about the DVD her kids are watching in the back seat? I didn't think so. Light yourself up like a Christmas tree and be around to ride next year! Be safe out there!

MTB 4X There will be a mtb four cross race at the BMX track in Peachtree City on Nov. 6 in conjunction with a BMX race. Click here for the flier.

Junior MTB Team Recruiting From the SORBA Forum: Cycle Youth is currently looking for a cash sponsor for the 2005 season. We are a non-profit organization and sponsorships are tax deductible.

We currently have approximately 25 junior riders and want to expand to 50+ members for the 2005 season. We also want to help a few of our elite members the chance to race in the NORBA nationals in 2005. We will have 2 or possibly 3 members who will qualify for the World Junior Championships if we can get to these races. We also have the ability to sweep the Jr. X Cat at the National Championships next year. Our current talent base is better than Team Devo (best youth cycling team in country) and our future is very bright in both male and female categories.  If anyone knows or works for a corporation who sponsors youth sports programs or is willing to, please contact me at cycleyouth@yahoo.com. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Any junior riders or parents of jr riders who want to join can also contact us and we promise you will have alot of fun and get great support and mentoring. www.cycleyouth.com

10-29-2004 Antonio Serrano Memorial Ride From: Antonio Serrano Memorial Fund, Location: Cycle Works
3576 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Duluth, GA, When: Sunday, October 31, 9:00am, Phone: 404-392-8521, Cost: $35.00 per person

On August 26th, 2004 Antonio Serrano was killed when struck by a car while cycling. Tony was 35; he was a husband, a father to 2 young daughters, a triathlete, and a friend. We have formed a group to organize a charity bicycle ride both in Tony’s honor and to benefit his family. For the short term, we are hosting a ride event on Sunday October 31. We are planning rides of 32 and 64 miles. Half of the proceeds (from entry fees and donations) will be donated to a college fund set up for Tony’s children.

The cost of the ride is $35.00. The ride will have aid stations and support and of course a cool T-shirt. So please come ride for a worthy cause! You can click on the PayPal icon above, or pick up a registration form at All3sports or Atlanta Cycling or CycleWorks. Registration starts at 7:30. The ride will begin at 9:00am.

10-30-2004 Weekend Special

***VOTE!!!!*** This coming Tuesday, November 2 is the presidential election (and local election). I urge everyone that is registered to vote to *VOTE*. It does not matter what political party you prefer. Voting is not just a right, it's your responsibility. I have a preference, but you know what the great thing about having freedom is? You can choose whoever you want! So, Vote! Kerry is a roadie, Bush is a mountain biker? My election prediction is that we will have a cyclist as our next president.

Lighten the Mood What Cyclists Really Mean when they say.....

More Politics Even Velonews has gotten into the political arena this weekend. Check out Patrick O'Grady's Friday's Foaming Rant. Kerry supporters, you especially want to read this (It's Pro-Kerry). For those that don't know about O'Grady, he is the man that draws the Velonews political cartoons and writes satire pieces. This one is good!
