Bellyache News! We are in danger of losing the St. Phillips church parking lot for the start of the Buckhead Bellyache! A small contingent of riders keeps peeing in the woods behind the parking lot. Over and over the church has said they only have two requests for us using the parking lot: Use a large towel to change in and come into the church to use the bathroom. Please! Go into the church to use the nice, large, new bathrooms with real toilets, running water, and air conditioning! If you see someone going to the bathroom in the woods, tell em not to!

Another Bicyclist Hit in Gwinnett From the AJC: "A bicyclist was killed before daybreak Tuesday while trying to cross a busy Gwinnett County road. The cyclist was attempting to cross Indian Trail Road near Oakbrook Parkway at about 6:15 a.m. when he was struck by a Mitsubishi Eclipse, said Gwinnett police Cpl. Dan Huggins. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died a short time later. The Norcross man driving the Eclipse was not injured, and will not be charged, Huggins said. The accident was the second in a week in which a bicycle rider was killed on a Gwinnett road. Last Thursday, Antonio Serrano, 35, of Alpharetta, was struck and killed while riding on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwanee."

9-2-2004 More on Tony This is a forwarded e-mail from the Gwinnett Bicycle Users Group
(BUG) about a call to action: To all BUG members --It's not often we ask you to do anything other than go for a ride, but this time it's serious. Some of you knew Tony Serrano, the cyclist who was killed last Thursday morning while riding in complete accordance with the law. It appears that our law enforcement community isn't aware that he was in compliance with the law. The investigating officer, Sergeant Thaxton, made public comments that demonstrated his misinterpretation of the law as it applies to
cyclists; he said "Bicyclists are supposed to be on the right edge of the roadway, and they were
not." He believes Tony should have been at the far right edge of the RIGHT TURN
LANE, even though he was not turning right. We need you to write a letter or send an e-mail to the head of the uniformed division of the Gwinnett County Police, Major Derek Edmunds. His e-mail address
is rick.edmunds@gwinnettcounty.com. The mailing address is 770 Hi-Hope Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30046. Here are the points to make: 1. Bicycles are vehicles and are required to obey traffic signals
and pavement markings like any other vehicle, and thus Tony was completely within  his rights
to ride in the lane he was in (and in fact was obeying the law). 2. The bicycle Tony was riding was  properly equipped under the law for nighttime riding. (Trish's note: This has not been established in any articles I have seen. There has been no mention of lights or reflectors. No one may really know.) 3. The driver who killed Tony had another lane in which to safely  pass him. 4. Sergeant Thaxton should not have made a statement assigning blame before theinvestigation was complete, and his statement is prejudicial against cyclists. You may also write to either the Gwinnett Daily Post(letters@gwinnettdailypost.com) or the Atlanta Journal Constitution (letters@ajc.com) to let them know their reports contained misleading information, using the same points."

Carter's Lake Work Party  Sunday, September 19, 2004, Time: 10:00:00 AM, Location: Carters Lake, Notes: This will be the location for the upcoming GAP/NORBA Carters Lake MTB Classic race at Ridgeway Park Ellijay, GA. Please help us get the trails ready for a big turnout (hoping for 250 racers this year). The agenda for the September 19 work party is to finish general maintenance – de-berming, clearing waterbars and also address any areas that may need special attention before the race. The work will require some hiking, so wear comfortable but sturdy shoes or boots. Bring work gloves, eye protection, plenty of water and your bike for a ride afterwards, if you're up for it. Food will be provided during the work party. Directions from Atlanta: I-75 north to I-575/GA-515 north to Ellijay, turn left at the Hardee's then immediately turn left again (before the bridge) onto 282 west, go ~ 6 miles and turn left at the Ridgeway Park entrance sign. Follow the park entrance road (some gravel road) for ~ 3 miles. Look for us with the SORBA tool trailer near the boat ramp turn-off. Call Robert McBride for more details 770-846-8255"

This Weekend This weekend are the races in Gainesville and the Share the Road Century. Cross your fingers and toes that Hurricane Francis will spare Atlanta. See the calendar above for details.

9-3-2004 Second Cyclist Killed in Gwinnett The Gwinnett Daily had another article on the cyclist killed on Tuesday.

Canned Response from Gwinnett Police This was forwarded to me by a friend. This is the canned response the Gwinnett Police Major is giving to those that are writing with their concerns about the way the officer interpreted the law in Tony's accident.

"Good afternoon.
Thank you for writing and expressing your concerns. Apparently Police officers and cyclists have a different interpretation or understanding of the laws that dictate where cyclists are required to ride when on the roadway. In an effort to clarify this issue I have asked representatives from the Gwinnett County Law Department, Solicitor's Office and District Attorney's Office for their opinions in this matter. I will respond to your e-mail in a more thorough manner when I have received their input.

In the mean time, I would like to point out that the investigation into the tragic accident that claimed Mr. Serrano's life is still ongoing and appropriate charges may be made if the facts of the case reveal violation(s) of the law.
Thank you again.

Subject: Tony Serrano Cycling Accident/Fatality Investigation

Major Edmunds,

As a longtime resident and member of the Atlanta Cycling community I am concerned with statements Ive read by the investigating officer, Sergeant Thaxton. His public comments demonstrated his misinterpretation of the law as it applies to cyclist: he said "Bicyclist are suppost to be on the right hand edge of the roadway, and they were not." He believes Tony should have been at the FAR RIGHT edge of the RIGHT TURN LANE, even though he was not turning right.

Upon reading the official statements from your spokesman Sergeant Thaxton, I believe the following FIVE areas of concern should to be addressed to clear up any prior statements made by your Investigators concerning this investigation:

1. Bicycles are vehicles and are required to obey traffic signals and pavement markings like any other vehicle, and thus Tony was completely within his rights.

2. The bicycle Tony was riding was proplerly equipted under the Law for Night time riding.

3. The driver who struck and killed Tony had another lane in which to safely pass him.

4. Sergeant Thaxton should not have made a statement assigning blame before the investigation was complete, and his statement is prejudicial against cyclist.

5. Your Office would not comment on outside reports that the 19 year old driver was operating on a restricted License and if so, why he was not sited under Georgia Code for doing so.

Sincerely,
My friend's name"

Another note: A memorial ride for Tony is being planned. I will post the details when I have them.

Trish's Rant Ah, It's been a while since I've ranted. A reminder that this is my opinion only!

The Georgia State Time Trial Championships was the most disorganized race I have ever been to in my 7+ years of racing. As a former race co promoter and current volunteer at several races per year, I realize that it is very difficult to put on races. As racers, we have to be thankful that promoters put on many quality events. There is no excuse for what went on at this race, however.

It is not uncommon for start times for Time Trials to be posted late to the race website. Although promised by 7:00 pm on Friday, start times were not posted until nearly 9:30 according to many. I checked at 7:30 before leaving my house, and they were posted when I checked again about 10:30. Many people that were confirmed preregistered entrants were not on the starting list there or at registration Saturday morning.

Registration opened approximately an hour before the time trial started. Within minutes, most of the entrants were in line. I stood in line about half way back for at least 15 minutes before it moved. Along with many others, I waited in line for over an hour to get my number, which I preregistered for. At first, they did not have a start list. There were only one or two people doing registration with about 5 people milling about. They finally called the first few groups scheduled to race up to the front, but they did not get their numbers any quicker. Several times one man told everyone to separate into two lines, but then nevermind as they did not have the entries separated. It seemed as though no one thought about how to register riders for what they had already preregistered for. Make sure the waiver is filled out, check the license, and hand them the number. It should be pretty simple. As one rider put it to me: "OK, now for a little math, I'd think most people would want at least a half hour warm-up before a TT after registering, number pinning, assembling their bikes, etc.. So, if you open registration at 9:15 (it may have been 9:10), staff it with two people, and you're making everyone go through the same line (all 200 or so entrants), and you assume that it will take 2 to 3 minutes per person to complete the registration process, and you're firing off riders every 30 seconds, I don't think it takes Stephen Hawking to figure out that you're going to have a problem pretty quickly."

I supposed Pros deserve special treatment ahead of those of us that stood in line for an hour. I was several people back when one of the local mountain bike pros and several of his buddies decided to step into line ahead of us. They would not go to the back even when something was said.
When I finally got my number, the volunteers did not know if the TT was beginning on time or not. Race organizers seemingly did not communicate anything to the volunteers. I had exactly 15 minutes to run to my car (good practice for cyclocross), change, get my bike out, tighten my aerobars, and warm up. My warm up consisted of riding down to the start of the time trial.

Many people missed their start times or were late. The official said my name once. No, wait, we need so and so to go next, not Trish. I was never called for a start time even though I was on the start list. After the last 1/2/3 Woman, the official told me I could go. The times for many riders were incorrect because riders missed start times, were never called, or were called several minutes too early.

The course itself was nice-slightly rolling with a good crosswind. Those that are good time trialists should have done well except for one thing. Some of the Pro/1/2 riders got stopped by a train during the middle of the State TT Championship. I do not know how they got approval for use of a TT course with a train crossing. The turn arounds were well marked although some of the major intersections did not have anyone to stop traffic. Luckily, traffic was light on a road on a Sunday morning in the middle of nowhere.

I will leave out comments about the crit and road race except for a few things. From what I confirmed, the time trial results were thrown out and participation points awarded for all except for the 1/2/3 Women as most of the their were correct. I still have yet to see a results sheet with my time on it although the officials at the finish had my number down. To me, it does not make a difference as I did not race in the omnium, but having an official time would be nice. I also heard that registration was opened less than an hour before both the crit and the road race.

Oh yes, and the Cat. 4 men got stopped by a training during the road race. It's fantastic to have so many races in Georgia this year. Hopefully, the promoters can get their act together for what could be a great series next year.

Big Creek Trails From SORBA-RAMBO Open House for Big Creek Park Wetlands Enhancement was held as scheduled and MTBr's showed up in force. A slide show presented by GeoSyntec project leader Ganesh Gopalakrishnan was followed by an intense Q&A. Questions about MTB trails were deferred to Roswell P&R, who, in turn, deferred them to our man Bob Grieco. It became clear that the City's development of the wetlands will replace much of the existing beginning and intermediate trail system with its concrete and boardwalk trails. This part of the park plan appears to be 'cast in concrete'. Fate of MTB trails will be considered only AFTER the wetlands project completion next Spring. Answers to questions about park access when heavy-duty earthmoving work starts this October were non-committal. It appears that while Roswell P&R and RAMBO have been commiserating, the wetlands project has been moving forward - oblivious to MTB usage. Look for more answers at our next meeting 8 September.

20th Annual Greenville Cycling Classic World Class Cycling Highlights “Fall for Greenville weekend
From: Steve Baker - Thursday, September 9, 2004
Greenville, SC — On October 9th and 10th the streets of downtown Greenville will come alive with the 20th Annual Greenville Cycling Classic presented by Hincapie Sportswear, a world class cycling event that regularly attracts some of the biggest names in professional bicycle racing. Several US national champions will join hundreds of amateur and professional bicycle racers to compete on a very challenging course that winds its way around Greenville’s downtown area, including the historic West End.

“2004 marks the 20th year for this popular event,” said Rich Hincapie, longtime Greenville Classic Race Director. “There have been more than a few milestones attained in world-class cycling this year, and we’re very pleased to add to that list by reaching the 20th anniversary for the Greenville Cycling Classic. We are very proud to be one of the oldest and most popular bicycle races in the United States. We are expecting a great turnout for this year’s event, so we should be in for some fast and exciting action.”

This year’s Greenville Cycling Classic will be highlighted by the participation of Greenville’s very own, George Hincapie, one of Lance Armstrong’s most trusted lieutenants and the only US Postal Service Team member to assist Lance with all six of his record-breaking Tour de France victories. George is a nine-time Tour de France competitor and fresh off of an impressive victory at the US 100K pro race in Atlanta on September 6th.

The annual Greenville criterium has been a mainstay on the National Racing Calendar for two decades and regularly attracts some of the country's most talented riders. This year’s Greenville Cycling Classic promises to be one of the most competitive and exciting races ever held in Greenville, with top professionals from across the country and around the world scheduled to compete in the nighttime criterium.

Hincapie Sportswear is proud to be the title sponsor of this year's event. The schedule will include a full weekend of racing for riders in almost every category, so there is no need to wait until sundown to check out the races. Starting early in the morning, men and women of all ages and levels will be giving their all to earn part of the purse, or, in the case of those kids on trikes, to earn their first ribbon.

With the top cycling teams converging on downtown to race the Greenville Cycling Classic, it’s only fitting that some of the strongest competition will come from local Elite Team Hincapie Sportswear. Hincapie is home to several of the Southeast’s top cyclists, including Chris Harkey, 2-Time Masters National Champion and Brandon McKever and Chris Montleon, two of the area’s most talented junior cyclists. Supported by a strong team of elite riders, Harkey, McKever, Montleon and their Team Hincapie teammates are definitely a threat to the countries top Pro’s.

In addition to a weekend of great cycling, there will also be a Bicycle Safety Fair and Helmet Giveaway on Saturday and Sunday afternoons sponsored by Greenville Safe Kids led by The Greenville Children’s Hospital. The goal is to involve children with hands on demonstrations of bicycle safety. There is a Helmet Museum, a Bicycle Safety Check Area, a Bicycle Safety Man demonstrating safe cycling habits and Local Bicycle Police Demonstrations. The Bicycle Safety Fair will be conducted at the corner of Main Street and Broad Street.

October 9th and 10th is sure to be an exciting weekend of bicycle racing action. Races start at 9:00am on Saturday, October 9th, with the day concluding in a 50-lap pro race at 6:00pm for a $10,000 cash purse. The start and finish of all races will be located near the corner of Main Street and Broad Street in downtown Greenville.

The Greenville Cycling Classic has grown from a small race held in Cleveland Park, with a prize purse of $1,800, to the kind of event that has put Greenville on the map as a regular stop on the professional bicycle racing circuit. With a purse in excess of $10,000, the Greenville Cycling Classic is now one of the most popular races on the US National Racing Series calendar. For more information, please visit http://www.HincapieSports.com/cyclingclassic.

Trish's note: I remember watching the Cleveland park crits while I was growing up in Greenville. We saw them several times over the years when my mom took my brother and me to the Greenville Zoo or Cleveland Park. Who knew that about 15 years later I would be racing in what would become "Michelin?"

9-12-2004 Share the Road Century I talked with one of the organizers, and just under 200 people came out to the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign's Share the Road Century on Labor Day.

Georgians for Road World Championships From Cyclingnews.com: "USA Cycling has announced the complete junior team that will compete at the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Verona, Italy between September 27-October 3. Also announced was the long team from which the U23 athletes will be selected from. Receiving automatic nominations based on their overall standings in the USA Cycling Junior National Road Selection Series are Zach Taylor (Marietta, Ga.) and Zach Bolian (Nashville, Tenn.). Taylor took top honours in the eight-race series after winning the selection series races in both Redlands, Calif. and Burlington, Wis. Taylor's accumulated point total was also boosted by two stage wins and a third place overall finish at the Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic and a silver medal at the USCF Junior National Time Trial Championships.  Bolian was the runner-up in the series standings thanks to consistent performances throughout the season including a win in the selection series stop in East Troy, Wis. Bolian's 2004 resume also includes top-five finishes in stage one and the overall classification in Fitchburg and both the road race and time trial events in Redlands.  Joining Taylor and Bolian through discretionary nominations on the 2004 U.S. Junior World Championship Team are Chris Stockburger (Fort Collins, Colo.), Adam Switters (Folsom, Calif.) and Alexander Boyd (Oxnard, CA.).

Current USCF Junior National Road and Time Trial Champion, Rebecca Much (Chicago, Ill.), will be the lone junior women's representative for the U.S. Much's two national titles automatically qualified her to contest both events in Verona. 9-16-2004 NORBA NCS on the East Coast?? Originally posted on http://www.hcor.net/. "This is strictly a heads up and on the down low. A NORBA rep is taking a trip to NC to a major ski resort to consider it an '05 National Venue in a few short weeks!!!!!!!! The reason I am posting this is I think it would be truly motivational for racers on the East Coast to show their desire and support for having this venue added. Take into consideration that it is centrally located to EVERY MAJOR CITY on the East Coast, it should have a massive turnout. The state of Florida alone is the 3rd largest state in the country and they would have a race close enough to attend. Atlanta, Knoxville, Roanake, Washington, DC, Raleigh, Louisville, every major city in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, etc. Basically, the reason I'm posting this is to get people to push NORBA. Call, e-mail and write them telling them how bad you want a National in your region. Let them know you'll definitely attend. Give them a good indication of how many riders there really are in this area who want this!! Please copy and post this on every forum (XC, DH, DS,...) you can think of on every site known to man, every newsletter and bike club you can. We desperately need this National to get the nod. HERE are the people to e-mail: klusk@usacycling.org NORBA Director  mmurphy@usacycling.org National Events Director jrogers@usacycling.org National Events Manager  norba@usacycling.org General Mailbox cc: all of them and break it down. BRIDGE TO BRIDGE POSTPONED!! From B2B: "BRIDGE TO BRIDGE 2004 POSTPONED FOR UPDATES, CHECK WWW.CALDWELLCOCHAMBER.ORG. DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, SINCE WE ARE TRYING TO CONTACT EVERYONE ELSE WITH THIS INFO. You will be informed with any changes. This isn't the first time I was wrong and it won't be the last. I am sorry for the trouble my flip-flop has caused, but for the safety of the
riders, we need to postpone the Bridge to Bridge Incredible Challenge. If local government declares a state of emergency, we will not have use of law enforcement, medical vehicles, and route marshals.
The Board of Directors of the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce made  the decision at 1pm EST Wednesday, September 15, 2004, to postpone the ride to a tentative date of November 14. The new date will be confirmed by early next week - once we are able to access damage from Ivan. The decision was based on the safety of riders in the event of bad weather, and the possibility of insufficient support of the ride. All current riders will continue to be registered for the ride. If you have a conflict with the new date, I will give you the same courtesy of trying to sell your spot via our web site beginning October 11 and ending October 29. Our no refund policy stands, so I hope to see you all at a later date. I cannot express my regret for this decision, but I think it is the right thing to do. I appreciate your continued support and patience. Cathy Rhuberg Program Director Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce"

Worlds I've been promised some GREAT photos of the Road World Championships by a local racer that is going over to watch. KM--now everyone knows, so I need the photos! :) I think everyone would really enjoy them! I also have several more great photos from Becky Miller from the Tour that I'll put up over the next few weeks.

9-19-2004 Genesis From Velonews.com "Last week I took a look at one of the potential "team of the year" award winners in the men's Colavita Olive Oil squad. This week, on to the women .... With her second-place finish on the streets of San Francisco at T-Mobile, Tina Pic may have put the finishing touches on arguments for her as U.S. domestic rider of the year, and for Genesis Scuba as team of the year. With the exception of a few stage races, it seems as if Pic's won just about everything this year, and oftentimes when it wasn't Pic, it was Genesis teammates like Laura Van Gilder or Sue Palmer-Komar taking top honors. And the ride in San Francisco reinforces the fact that, although she took her third U.S. criterium title in a row, Pic is much more than a "crit rider." As for her team, it may well be the most unsung super-squad in recent memory."

Blue Ridge Parkway Damage The Blue Ridge Parkway in NC is a popular cycling destination, especially in the fall with the changing of the leaves. Parts of it were heavily damaged during Hurricane Ivan last week. Some sections may remain closed for up to a year. Parts of the damage are on the Assault on Mt. Mitchell route. Harbison State Park Work Day (Columbia, SC) "A Trails Work Day has been scheduled for Saturday, October 9 beginning at 9am. Plans are to meet at the front parking lot and caravan to the
Stewardship Trail for re-routes on the upper end of the Connector Trail and on Stewardship near where it crosses the gravel road. Bob Hadden, president of the newly-formed Friends of Harbison State Forest, will be leading this vent. Bring gloves, water, rakes, shovels, and pruning tools if you have
them - if not, come anyway! If you can't make it by 9:00, call Bob at 960-5783 to see where they are working. If you can stay until the work is finished (around noon), that would be great, but it's also OK to just come for an hour or two. Thanks for your continued interest in your state Forest! Russell Hubright
Harbison Director SC Forestry Commission"

NC State Parks and National Forests Closed Many NC State Parks and National Forests, including Pisgah, are closed (as of Sunday, 9-19). Check with the local park rangers or forest service to see if the park you wish to ride at is open. Western NC sustained heavy flooding and damage from rains associated with Hurricane Ivan.

GA Trails I'm not sure of the status of the Georgia Trails. Check with SORBA to be sure your favorite local trail is open. I have not seen any specific closure information for Georgia, but many local trails are closed after a heavy rain.

George Does Downtown I heard that George Hincapie and his fiance just bought a high end condo in downtown Greenville, SC. His Paris Mountain (SC) home was on sale earlier this year for over $300,000 (this translates into a cool $500,000 for us Atlantans).

NEWSFLASH!! TUMBLING CREEK MTB RUMBLE POSTPONED!!!  From SORBA: "Regrettably we must reschedule the Tumbling Creek MTB Rumble due to the predicted effects of Hurricane Ivan. The event has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 7, 2004. Please let your riding buddies know of this change. If you pre-registered for the event you have some options:

Keep your entry for the rescheduled date, no need for any action on your part.
Request to move the pre-entry to another SORBA event, Carters Lake Classic or 2005 Helen Fat Tire Festival.
Request to move an online pre-entry to the NGBDA Georgia MTB Series Finale.
Request a refund of your entry fee. Please allow several weeks for us to process your request and in some case there may be a small handling charge.
Make your entry fee a charitable donation to SORBA. This is our fall fundraiser that enables us to continue operating though the winter months. We can send you the event t-shirt or use the entire amount as a donation.
The Tumbling Creek event will still be counted as one of your finishes in the series.

Thank you for understanding the need for this action."

9-20-2004 Bull Mountain Info. From the SORBA Forum: "The Nimblewill Church Road into the Bull/Jake Mountain area has been completely washed out. A section about 40 feet across is simply missing, closing the road for a while. If you are coming from Atlanta or Dahlonega on Hwy 52, go past Grizzle's at Nimblewill Church Road about 2 miles. Turn right on Nimblewill Church Road (the other end, freshly paved) and look for the Bull Mountain turn on the left. As of this morning, the Bull Mountail parking area was closed, but the trails around Wasega were open. Lot's of blow down, but still rideable."

9-20-2004 Outback Ride Time Change The Outback Wednesday ride time changes to 6:15pm on 9/15.

Jittery Joe's announces junior sponsorship plan The Jittery Joe's Roasting Company has announced plans to sponsor a certain number of junior teams throughout the U.S. in 2005. The sponsorship plan will be similar to that used for the Jittery Joe's Pro Cycling Team. Junior teams will purchase a special blend of dark roast coffee and re-sell the coffee to make money for their team. "We hope that this will be a way for some of these young riders to raise a few more thousand dollars for their teams," said Charlie Mustard, owner of the Roasting Company. "Jittery Joe's Roasting Company has made a major commitment to American cycling and we are excited to be able to help out the young riders that may make it to our pro team in a couple of years." Junior clubs that are interested in applying for the sponsorship can request more information by sending an email to mail@thebeanteam.com. Between three and five teams within the U.S. will be selected. Only clubs with at least five full-time junior members can apply for the sponsorship.

Univest Grand Prix The Univest Grand Prix is the premier amateur races in the US. It is also one of only 6 ranked UCI races in the US. The organizers bring the best of the US and put them up against some of the best European amateur squads. Tim Henry (Jittery Joes) is back and tells us what team rides like little girls (or is that girlie men?). Oh, and Tim gets a great result himself!

A Few Good Women Wanted for a Team!! A local team based here in Atlanta has 2-3 openings for Cat. 2 and 3 women. A rider contract will be required. If you have a current race resume (you must have raced in 2004!), email it to me at sttarlite@hotmail.com, and I will pass it onto them. Chattahoochee Meetings National Park Service News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Sept. 15, 2004 CONTACT 404-562-3182 Paul Winegar National Park Service Schedules Public Meetings On Management Plan for Chattahoochee River

A new round of public scoping meetings has been scheduled Sept. 28-30 to give citizens and interested organizations a chance to propose additional alternatives for a general management plan for the 48-mile Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in metro Atlanta.  NRA Superintendent Kevin Cheri said the public meetings will be held on three successive nights at these locations:

• Tuesday, Sept. 28—Chattahoochee Tech College, Mountain View Campus, 2680 Gordy Parkway, Marietta.
• Wednesday, Sept. 29—Chattahoochee Nature Center, 9135 Willeo Rd., Roswell.
• Thursday, Sept. 30—Pinckneyville Community Center, 4650 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Norcross.

The meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. each night and those who wish to speak can sign up before the sessions begin, Cheri said. “Also, we have invited the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to be our planning partner as we continue to move through the process.”  In order to accommodate additional public scoping, the National Park Service also is extending the public comment period until Nov. 15 on a draft general management plan released last June. Originally, the comment period was to expire July 30, but it is being extended to allow citizens, conservation groups and the State of Georgia more input on the draft plan.“It’s important that river users and our state partners feel like they’ve had ample opportunity to help shape alternatives and identify a preferred alternative,” Cheri said. “In order to accommodate this, we are going back a few steps in the planning process to try and build a consensus on the best way to manage the resources and recreational uses on the river. We hope everyone who has an interest in the Chattahoochee will participate in this process,” he said.

Marietta Crit Time Change Starting next Tuesday, Sept. 21, the Marietta crit will start at 6:15. It will be one hour plus 5 laps. This was announced by John Allison tonight at the start of the crit. (I think it was John Allison, the guy that does the week's announcements.)

Intown Ride Time Changes  From Todd Fryburger: "As much as we hate to admit it, the days are markedly shorter with the advent of Fall. Therein, this constitutes my annual e-mail setting forth
the "official notice" for changes in the ride start times for the various "In-Town Classics".

The week of 09/13/04 (this week) constitutes the final week of 06:30 PM ET start times for the Sandy Springs Ride (Tuesday), the Peachtree Battle (Wednesday), and the Chastain Ride (Thursday).

The week of 09/20/04 (next week) will see the start time for each of  these rides move to 06:15 PM ET. The Sandy Springs ride will continue to  include the "Three Humps" in Vinings the week of 09/20/04 and 09/27/04.

The week of 10/04/04 the start time for each of these rides will move to 06:00 PM ET - this will be the final start time change until the end of Daylight Savings Time. The Sandy Springs ride will then move to the "short option" which eliminates the Three Humps.

Daylight Savings Time ends this year on 10/31/04. As such, the  Saturday Tucker Ride will move to it's Winter start time of 10:00 AM ET on 11/06/04.

The "Sunday Ride" which owns this e-mail distribution list will maintain its regular start time of 09:00 AM ET regardless. Others may wish to advise regarding the start times of other rides
throughout the Atlanta metro area that I have not mentioned above.

D'Antoni Accepts Two Year Suspension The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced today that Joseph D'Antoni of Raleigh, N.C., tested positive at the Track World Cup Qualifier on February 26, 2004 in Cooper City, Fla. He tested positive for recombinant human Erythropoietin (rEPO), a banned substance under UCI rules. The 27 old has accepted a two year suspension from all competition, beginning on September 22, 2004.

In a written statement, D'Antoni denied that he had taken EPO. "I have been racing bikes since 1992, and have made the long, gradual trek from lowly Cat 5, all the way to Cat 1...This year I was graced with the opportunity to represent the United States in a UCI World Cup in Mexico, the realization of one of my long dreams. I have done all of this through smart, hard training and dedication. I have never doped, or even seen EPO. For what it's worth I'm deathly afraid of needles, and can't stand getting the refresher vaccines that I need for work.

I also value my health and my wife far too much to take a chance of having a heart attack from the abuse of a substance like EPO."

As well as his own test, D'Antoni questioned the validity of Adham Sbeih's positive test for EPO last year, and described himself as "mildly shocked" at the conditions of the lab where he saw his B sample being tested. "It was was disorganized - I saw employees mistakenly throwing trash into a plastic bag containing samples. It became clear that like many scientific experiments, the procedure was lengthy, complicated, and with plenty of opportunity for error. We were unable to stay for the entire procedure because USADA and the lab do not release their procedures ahead of time, so I was left to trust that the lab technician did the test correctly.

"I was planning on retiring from elite level competition at the end of this year, but in no way did I plan on going out like this. Given this and that fact that it would cost upwards of $50,000 to mount a scientifically viable challenge to the test, I have
done whatever I can to help the sport of cycling, I have accepted a suspension on the basis that even though my sample may have shown positive for r-EPO, I never took EPO.

"I plan on still coaching and volunteering in cycling, as I have met way too many wonderful people and been too many incredible places because of cycling, and I want to help give those opportunities to others."

Trish's note: Joey raced for the Greensboro Velo Club out of Greensboro, NC. There is also more coverage the Daily Peloton.

Jed on a CX Bike (Trish's Note: Jed is an Elite Cyclocross racer living in Athens, GA. He regularly mixes it up at the Georgia Cross series.) It is hard to pick out a cross bike in a sea of 2,500 mountain bikes. But, you would not have thought that from all the comments along the course: “Dude! That guy is on a cross bike!” Jed Schneider was the only rider in the original break of ten without a full-suspension mountain bike. The break included eventual winner Brian Matter, former winners Steve Tilford, and Doug Swanson, and notables Travis Brown, Frankie Andreu, and US National team member John Devine. However, Schneider was not the only rider with a unique set-up. Travis Brown chose a similar tire selection (30c cyclocross tubulars) but equipped them on a full-suspension rig with disk brakes. Schneider remained confident on his 17.5 pound UCI legal Alan cyclocross bike. The carbon X33 frame was equipped with Reynolds carbon wheels. The drive train and components were compliments of Truvativ and Crank Brothers.

Schneider’s 6th place finish trumped the highest placing for a cross bike in Chequamegon (previously 17th) and is an indication of how far road/cyclocross technology has come, to be able to stand up under extreme conditions. “I couldn’t believe how well everything held up. I must have heard the rims bottom out 50 times. I flat landed the bike from five feet up and rode another 15 miles on the bike! Everything is still fine, I’ll race it on the same equipment next week. There are a few gearing changes I will make for next year as this seemed the limiting factor in my finish this year, but the core concept will remain unchanged. Matter said he was glad I was not on a mountain bike or I might have contested his win this year, but regardless, I think I can go top 3 next year.”

Jed continues: “Those guys were amazed about how fast I was bombing the descents, but perhaps the best compliment of the day came from Hollywood Henderson [former Single Speed World Champion], when he told me I was crazy. That’s when I know I’m getting somewhere.”
