2004 Races I heard from a reliable source that the 2004 road race calendar will be out by the end of January after a meeting/conference call of the race promoters. I expect the GAP series schedule to be released in February. Click here for a preliminary GAP schedule.

Winters are Slow It's winter; it's a little slow in the news department. I'm trying to find things to post, but it's a little thin out there! Email me if you have news. Want to get that team press release published? Have a training report? Recruiting for the new club? Is your club putting on a race? Southeastern Cycling publishes all local cycling news!

WBL News From the WBL: "Jan. 1st - John The Kid Murphy breaks down the door to 2004 as he unleashes furious uphill kick to finishing line and takes first win of the year on The FS Concepts (Fetty Training) Semi-Classic on Jan. 1st. Details soon." and "Jan. 3rd Pic ices it again at the line, but it was the hot burning Shooting Starr that launched deeper into yellow, where he sits on a very comfortable thrown.
The ride was reminiscent of the old-school WBL era with plenty of spirited riding, worn out legs and smiling faces."

He talks about recovering from breaking several vertebrae at the Tour De Toona last year and his new team, Cola-Vita/Bolla. specifically for the race series. The total length of the course is approximately .8 of a mile and will run through the baseball diamonds at Renaissance Park. The schedule for the series is located at www.charlottemtnbike.com. Two categories will race at a time but will be separated by one minute. Stick around after the race and cheer on your mountain biking pals as the race the exciting course. If the series has sparked your interest just yet, check this out. At all five events, we will have the latest tunes from DJ Matt , homemade vegetable soup, and cold brew to sample from our sponsor. What more could you ask
for? The course is open, marked, and ready to be ridden. If you enter the "coliseum loop", the short track loop will turn left about fifty yards into the existing trail. It's marked, so stop by Renaissance Park and give the new trail a few test runs.

Spin Cycle Women's Team "The Capital Cycling Club of Raleigh, NC announces the formation of the Spin Cycle/Duke Sports Medicine Elite Women’s Cycling Team. Returning rider Laura Weislo will be joined by 2001 World Duathlon Championship bronze medallist Patty Shoaf, Mandy Lozano, the 2003 Oregon State Women’s Best All Around Road Racer, and 2003 NRC Tri-Peaks Challenge winner Cara McCauley, creating the strongest women’s elite team in North Carolina. Janet Edgerton, a bronze medallist at the Master’s National Championship Road Race, Daniele Staskal, the 2003 NC Road Race Champion, Riina Tehver and Laurin Stennis round out the team.

“My goal in forming the team is to cultivate a supportive and enthusiastic environment among the elite riders, and to help develop the newer racers," says team spokeswoman Laura Weislo. "I’m really thrilled with the team. We have the talent to succeed at the highest level, and we’re ready to take on the national
circuit. It’s a challenge, for sure, but our team has awesome chemistry, a perfect balance of strengths, and all the women are really excited about racing. With Patty’s awesome sprint, Mandy’s excellent climbing abilities and Cara’s and my strength in the hills and on the flats, we could easily surprise people this year."

The women’s team will compete in many high-profile national races in 2004, including the Fitchburg Longsjo and Tour de Toona Stage Races, the Liberty Classic and T-mobile International, the Shelby, Roswell, Clarendon Cup and Michelin Classic Criteriums, the US National Championships and Olympic Trials, as well as the Southeastern US regional races.

1-10-2004 GA DOT Plans From NFBUG: "I just wanted to let you all know that the Regional Development Centers, through a contract with GDOT, are developing district-wide bicycle and pedestrian plans. The purpose of the plans is to designate new roads and areas for bike routes and trails, identify areas for pedestrian improvements, and develop recommendations and a funding schema. This will help rural counties and localities prioritize and seek funding for projects, and will help guide GDOT's bicycle and pedestrian program goals, including the incorporation of any new bike/ped routes into future plans for road widening/reconstruction projects. These Bike & Ped Plans cover the RDC districts and do not overlap with MPO districts (i.e. major urban areas)  since they already develop their own extensive bike & ped plans. The development of the plans will include a public planning process, a citizens' advisory committee and other opportunities for input. If you would like to participate, please contact the appropriate RDC below. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you and best wishes for the New Year,  Amy Goodwin, State Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator, Office of Planning, Rm 349, Georgia Department of Transportation, 2 Capitol Square, SW, Atlanta, GA 30334, 404-657-6692 Tel, http://www.dot.state.ga.us/dot/plan-prog/planning/projects/bicycle/index.shtml

Tanasi Trails in Trouble! From SORBA-Chattanooga: "I recently attended a public meeting held by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) regarding the proposed Corridor K (U.S. 64) bypass
"around" the Ocoee River Gorge. The project is slated for construction of a four lane divide highway from the lower Ocoee crossing just east of U.S. 411 all the way to Ducktown, TN, a distance of nearly 21 highway miles for either of the two build alternatives presented. What is of greatest concern to mountain bikers is the fact that either build alternative will wipe out the lower reaches of the Chilhowee trail system and adversely affect the Tanasi trails as well. The plan calls for the superhighway to cross the Ocoee just past the number 3 powerhouse / Thunder Rock campground and run on the south side of the river, dangerously close to the Chestnut Mountain Loop and virtually wiping out Bear Paw Loop. Before crossing back over the river just upstream from the Whitewater Center, the road will eliminate the upper reaches of the brand new Brush
Creek Trail. TDOT has issued a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) as required, but upon perusal and in discussion with others at the meeting, I find it to be hurried and questionable in some of the details. True to form, we now have 8 days (yes, EIGHT DAYS) to respond by letter only to the project comments office in Nashville. If you have never written a letter of protest before, now would be a great time to give it try. You don't have to be long-winded, just passionate and succinct. Allow me to highlight some points to write about, starting with some facts about the proposed highway:

Alt. 1/Alt.2

Total Length (miles) 20.4/20.6
Waterway Crossings (bridges/culverts) 30 (21/9)/31 (21/10)
Four-lane tunnels 4/4
Connector roads to old US 64 8+/8+
Ocoee River Crossings 3/3
TRAIL SEGMENTS PHYSICALLY AFFECTED 7/8
Construction Cost (in 2000 dollars) $1,481,480,900/1,531,448,100

That's 1.5 BILLION, friends. 1500 million. 74.3 million dollars per mile. The State of Tennessee would be required to foot 20% of that bill which would amount to 14.8 million dollars per mile (the rest is federal money so it's still our tax dollars). With construction proposed to begin in 2006-7, and needing at least 8-10 YEARS to build, there can be no doubt that the 2000 price tag will be severely inflated upon completion.

Also consider:

- Fragmentation and diminished quality of wildlife habitat, especially impacts to black bear populations (one of the largest in the east)
- Potential degradation of water quality and loss of aquatic habitat from increased sedimentation and pyritic acid leachate into waterways
- Visual and noise impact (especially of two huge new bridges near Tanasi)

SO, please take the short time required to write a quick letter to TDOT explaining why you favor the NO-BUILD ALTERNATIVE for the ADHS Corridor K/Ocoee Bypass - before we give away something that cannot be gotten back. It's your forest, they're your trails! The address to send comments to is:

Tennessee Department of Transportation
Project Comments
505 Deaderick Street
Suite 300, James K. Polk Building
Nashville, TN 37243-0332

Also, if you are a Tennessee resident, you might consider sending comment to your state representatives, who have yet to approve final appropriations for this project.  Thank You Sincerely,  Tim Carlfeldt, SORBA-CBC chapter president"

Blanket's Creek Trail Maintenance There will be a trail maintenance day at Blanket's Creek on Sunday, Jan. 18th at 1 pm. From Sorba-Woodstock: "Trail Maintenance for January will be Sunday 1/18/04, at 1pm. This is necessary so we can attend the Thompson open house Saturday the 17th. Dwelling has a new re-route built with the Dingo (your donations at work) at  Quartz Hill, you now ride through the quartz rocks and follow the contour around to connect to the trail. While out working on the trail today I noticed someone has been removing roots in the last couple of days. The roots are left in the trail to help control erosion and to help develop tech skills. If you see anyone doing this type of work and there is not a work party with a crew leader please ask them to stop and explain why. I will know have to go back and install rocks where the roots were taken out. I'll get off my soap box and close with a reminder about the change in trail maintenance to Sunday the 18th. Thanks see you the 18th at 1pm-Charlie Shultz"

1-15-2004 USCF News This is composed of an email sent by George Heagerty to several mailing lists.   "Thank you to all of you who participated in the GA / AL promoters conference call last week. We are well on our way to distributing the 2004 SE race calendar. Most of you know that My wife and I moved to Colorado Springs in November 0f 2003. My focus was getting Locals Associations set up in as many states as possible. I am happy to say that we have 23 LA's representing 33 states. Now I plan to get back to the job of being your Regional Coordinator once again and I couldn't be happier. Our local contacts care deeply about cycling and I truly enjoy and am privileged to work with such a fine group. John Johnson for GA and AL soon to become a recognized USAC local association known as (ALGABRA), Chips Chapman, has the Carolina's (CCA), Tim Molyneaux, Florida Road Cycling Assoc (FRCA) and Mike Mead the new president of the Tennessee Bicycle Racing Assoc. (TBRA).
I want to especially thank Neal Boyd for all of his contributions to racing in the SE and for making the move to sanction his off road series with NORBA. The "Wheelie Wild Winter Race Series" presented by Red Hook Brewery. The series dates are January 18th, 24th & 31st, Feb 14 & 21st. The series was created for those who are ready for something different and to attract new folks to mountain bike racing. The racing will be similar to a road criterium or a cycle-cross race yet will be held on single and double track trails that were built specifically for the race series. The total length of the course is approximately .8 of a mile and will run through the baseball diamonds at Renaissance Park. For more information www.charlottemtnbike.com.

NORBA has undergone significant changes for 2004. I wont go into detail here other than to tell you that Kelli Lusk is your contact and can be reached at klusk@usacycling.org for more information on the many
improvements made to rejuvenate the program. We must be doing something right because the number of promoters coming back is simply amazing and includes the Georgia Area Promoters (GAP) series.

Changes to take place
* Beginning November 1, 2003 ALL licenses will expire December 31, 2004 and the annual fee will remain $50.00 for an adult racing license-add-ons will be $25
* Between September 1 and October 31, 2004 your license fee will be $25 and expire in December of 04. *
* Before September 1, the cost is still $50, but the license will expire December 31, 2004.
* Junior licenses will be reduced to 25.00

Upgrades
Riders will now be able to request an upgrade online via the USAC website. All requests for upgrades will be forwarded to the person responsible for upgrading in each region for approval. Approved upgrades
will be entered directly into the USAC rider database.

Bikes: we will be adopting UCI standards for bikes, with the transition taking place in 2007. Most equipment currently being sold complies, but there will be some instances of older equipment being retired in 2007. Some riders, particularly very short ones, will have to modify their positions slightly.

Radios: currently radios are only permitted in races open to cat 1 or two senior riders. There were proposals to include races open to cat 1 or two *masters*, one of which passed. Thus next year radios will be banned for junior races, but permitted for any other race open to a cat 1 or two rider (this includes uncategorized masters, like men 40+)."

Trish's Rant-Winter Sucks! Winter sucks. I am so bored of the trainer, it isn't funny! Despite having a great trainer instructor and enjoying trainer class, it's already getting old. It is only Jan. 15th, and I'm ready to get back on the road after work. I want the wind in my face, not the fan. I want to feel the breeze and the warm weather. I want group rides and Fellinis pizza!  I hate my trainer.

24 Hours of Adrenalin Dates Trilife has announced that the 24 Hours of Adrenalin in Conyers at the Georgia International Horse Park will be October 16-17. Entry fees will increase slightly from last year.

Satiated Ok, I am a little more satiated tonight. Trainer class was hard (an hour of tempo anyone??) but cleansing. I drove out the "I hate my trainer demons" through tempo. Next week, I'll go back to hating my trainer. For a few days, though, everything is right with the world. (I still say the instructor of my trainer class is the best in Atlanta. Watch out competition...we are training right, training smart, and will be flying! Dude....I know you are reading this!! :P )

This event is important not only because it has a positive economic impact for our state, but also because it increases awareness for the Georgia Cancer Coalition and its mission to defeat cancer," said Governor Sonny Perdue.

Now a marquis race for national and international cycling teams, the Dodge Tour de Georgia is the highest ranked stage race in the U.S. It is the only stage race of this length in the country that is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste International (UCI). For 2004 over 150 media representatives from around the world are expected to register for credentials, giving the Dodge Tour de Georgia a global audience and international prominence. Over 500,000 spectators are expected over the six days to watch the races and participate in activities in local communities across the state.

About the Dodge Tour De Georgia

The Dodge Tour de Georgia is the largest multi-day stage race for professional cyclists in North America, and serves as a rolling festival to entertain and educate spectators across the state. It is sanctioned by the UCI and USAC as a premier event for elite athletes around the world. Velodrome News East Point, GA. On January 20th, The East Point City Council voted unanimously to approve the signing of a 20 year lease with the East Point Velodrome Association (EPVA) for the Dick Lane Velodrome. Over 200 cyclists from the Atlanta area showed up at the meeting to express their support for the velodrome.

Wayne Whitesides, member of the EPVA, was the first speaker during the public comment period. He outlined what had been done at the Velodrome to reach out to the East Point community, specifically the Youth Bicycle Little League program. Ninety children were able to ride at the track last year. The EPVA reaffirmed its stance that it supported coexistence of the Velodrome with a proposed aquatic center on the same property. Several other speakers voiced their support for the DLV.

Debate was heated between city council members. Councilman Nelson said that "we need to move quickly to save the velodrome....deterioration cannot continue." She also said that she uses the Velodrome to sell the city to home buyers and developers. She urged the other council members to vote in favor of the velodrome and "save something special for East Point and our kids." Councilman Douglas supported the proposal and said that he was "delighted when the group (EPVA) agreed to train our youth for free." Councilman Pittman wanted further cost analysis done on the budget to run the Velodrome. She was concerned that East Point residents would pay for the track but not get to use it. A friendly amendment was added to the lease to address Pittman's concerns.

Pete Antonvich, president of the EPVA, said the next step is to get the Environmental Protection Division to approve the repair of the velodrome because of the stream. They also need to finish fundraising. Antonvich also said that the Bicycle Little League "will always be part of our velodrome program." It is an important outreach to the community of East Point. The EPVA is also talking to the city about a three day cycling festival.

If you would like to donate to the velodrome repair fund, please visit the DLV web page. All donations are tax deductible.

1-24-2004 Lance to Ride TdG!

ATLANTA, Ga. (January 23, 2004) – The road to France now goes through Georgia. The United States Postal Service Professional Cycling Team®, which is presented by Berry Floor, has committed to enter a full squad in the 2004 Dodge Tour de Georgia, April 20 to 25. Leading the way for the USPS Pro Cycling team will be five-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.

“I am pleased to confirm that Lance will be part of the USPS Pro Cycling Team that will compete in the Dodge Tour de Georgia this year,” said Bill Stapleton, principal at Capital Sports & Entertainment, the agency that represents Armstrong. “This is a great opportunity for him as he prepares for his attempt to win a historic sixth Tour de France. And he is pleased that the Tour directly supports the Georgia Cancer Coalition.”

The USPS Pro Cycling Team is a Division I Trade Team, as rated by the international governing body of cycling, the Union Cycliste International (UCI). It will be just one of 18 teams expected to compete in the country’s premier, professional cycling stage race. Other UCI Division I and II trade teams, and U.S. division I, II and III teams are currently under consideration, representing an elite field of the world’s best road cyclists. The Dodge Tour de Georgia is the highest ranked stage race in the U.S. by the USA Cycling (USAC). It is the only stage race of this length in the U.S. that is sanctioned by the UCI for 2004 that offers the coveted points that competitors need for year-end rankings.

“Following a successful first year, we are pleased the Dodge Tour de Georgia has fit into our team’s racing schedule in 2004, a year that could be a historic one for both our team and the sport,” said Johan Bruyneel, sports manager of the USPS cycling team. “Led by Lance, we will send a strong team to the race in the hopes of improving on our team’s fourth and fifth place overall finishes last year.”

A native of Austin, Texas, Armstrong first made headlines by winning the 1991 U.S. National Amateur Championship. He turned professional after the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and the following year won the World Road Race Championship. After winning his second Tour duPont stage race in the U.S. and competing in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment and recovery for the next five months. He returned to competitive cycling in 1998 and a year later won his first of five consecutive Tour de France races.

"Dodge is very pleased to again lend its support to what is fast becoming one of North America's premiere sporting events,” said Craig Fisher, director of marketing and product planning for Dodge. “By renewing our sponsorship, this affirms that the earned exposure, value and benefits already realized for our brand and products is once again assured, while joining the ongoing battle against cancer. Our support and justification is further confirmed by the addition of cycling’s premiere athlete, Lance Armstrong, to the roster of word-class competitors that will participate in the event.”

Dodge is the title sponsor of the 2004 Tour de Georgia. The U.S. Postal Service is one of many other sponsors supporting the race this year. For 2004 over 150 media representatives from around the world are expected to register for credentials, giving the Dodge Tour de Georgia a global audience and international prominence. Over 500,000 spectators are expected over the six days to watch the races and participate in activities in local communities across the state.

“The Dodge Tour de Georgia promises to be even more exciting than last year. The addition of professional cycling’s premiere athlete will certainly promote and highlight Georgia as a tourist destination and generate a great deal of awareness for our message that the Tour is ‘Georgia’s race to defeat cancer’,” said Stan Holm, executive director of the Dodge Tour de Georgia. “And the Tour is particularly pleased that we will provide a national platform in support of Lance’s mission to make the fight against cancer a priority.

Shelby Crit Cancelled From Cyclingnews.com: "The Shelby Criterium, one of the better known criteriums in the USA, has been cancelled for 2004. The race, usually held around April/May, has been struggling with a lack of a title sponsor for the last two years. "Our local economy is not strong and while we have had great support for our race, we have not had a title sponsor for the last two years. In each of those years the race has lost money. Unfortunately we have not been able to turn things around and therefore have no choice but to cancel the race," organizer Mike Keeley told Cyclingnews. Keeley added that, "Shelby is grateful to the sport of cycling and all the professionals who visited our town over the last nine years. Being a small town, we felt especially proud of our being able to host so many talented athletes. Hopefully we will be back."

More Lance in Georgia According to a Daily Peloton interview with Floyd Landis (USPS), Lance is planning on coming to Georgia.

1-29-2004 Nalley Crit News ROSWELL, GA (January 28, 2004) – The Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium returns Sunday, May 2, 2004 for its third consecutive year as a popular entertainment event for area families. It has become one of the premier one-day professional cycling events in the United States, attracting over 400 elite road cyclists to the North Fulton area to compete for $20,000 in cash and prizes. "The bicycle race is a great spectator event for the whole family. It has competition, speed, wrecks, and colorful athletes under the oak trees on a Sunday afternoon on Canton Street all for free," commented City of Roswell Mayor, Jere Wood. "The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time at last year's Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium," said Terry Michelitch, event organizer and member of Roswell Velo, Inc., the non-profit cycling club that handles logistics of the races. "This is our third annual event and we are definitely seeing dividends – an increase in spectators, an increase in children for the safety clinic and higher quality in the field of racers with elite-level athletes from all across the U.S."

The City of Roswell and two Nalley dealerships, Nalley Lexus Roswell and Nalley Lexus Smyrna, return as title sponsors. Their assistance insures that the Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium remains one of the best one-day criterium races in the Southeast. Multiple races for elite men and women will take place from approximately noon to 7:30 p.m. using the same course as last year, a one-mile closed circuit along Canton, Norcross, Green and Woodstock streets. Spectators will enjoy all the thrills and spills of this flat but technical course, as athletes can reach speeds over 36 miles per hour near the start/finish line on Canton Street. "Nalley Lexus Roswell and Nalley Lexus Smyrna are extremely proud to continue our association with the City of Roswell and Roswell Velo. The Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium has proven to be more than a showcase for bicycle racing and has become one of the most popular community celebrations in the north metro Atlanta area," said Bill Morton, Vice President & General Manager for Nalley Lexus Roswell and Nalley Lexus Smyrna.

While the races are the primary focus of the day, there are a number of activities throughout the historic area of Roswell for spectators of all ages to enjoy. Restaurants and shops will offer specials for patrons that day and spectators will if the enjoy giveaways, music and displays the Expo Area on Canton Street. The Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo, a two-hour safety and skills clinic for children ages 6 to 12, will be managed by the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell and is part of the festivities. Children can also participate in the Shimano Youth Series races, presented by RBC Centura, which will be held prior to the final races on the official race course. All of these activities are free.

USA Cycling (USAC), the national organization that governs and promotes bicycle racing, has kept the Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium on the National Racing Calendar, which is the premier competitive schedule that offers points for year-end championship standings. Last year's Roswell event was covered by local and national media, including Velo News Magazine. Last year, Jonas Carney of the Prime Alliance Cycling Team, who is one of the top sprinters in the country, won the Men's Pro 1 race. The Women's Pro 1,2,3 race was won by Dahlonega's Tina Mayolo-Pic (formerly with Diet Rite), who is the two-time U.S. National Criterium Champion.
