USA Crits April 28-May 6 USA Crits
April 28-May 6, 2005

by Team Myogenesis

Greetings from the Myogenesis Nutrition pb Landmark Dodge camp. It’s been a couple of weeks since I have checked in, so lets' get up to date. This time of year brings ALOT of big time racing to the southeast. Not only the Tour De Georgia, bringing in heat from the US, as well as several Pro Tour teams, but the Athens Twilight Criterium and the rest of the USA CRIT series. www.usacrits.com . The Athens Twilight is an annual rite of passage in the southeast. People make the trek to Athens, Georgia, from every corner of the world, to participate in the world’s fastest criterium. This year would be no exception, with all the domestic teams sticking around after the TDG .

Myogenesis Nutrition would throw their name into the hat in the “show”, with Jon Atkins, Cleve Blackwell, Chad Madan, and Travis Sherman. Twilight is a little different than most criteriums, as they have qualifying NASCAR style on Friday night. The qualifying is run in heats, with an 8 up race on Computrainers. Myogenesis let it be known to the big boys that they were there, with Jon and Cleve both placing top 15 on the starting grid. Twilight also has USCF amateur races, which would encompass the rest of the team since 2’s are were not allowed in the “show” this year. In the USCF amateur finals race, our soon to be super sprinter, Casey Magner, took a fourth place. Also involved in the Twilight festivities this year was the “fat tire crit”. This is a race in which the mountain bikers take to the crit course with slick tires on their steeds. This years race would be a win and out after 16 laps. Sean Harper, mountain biker and cat 3 road racer, decided to take part in this race, along with David Hall semi-pro fat tire and cat 2 road, and Tim Owens. In turn three of the sixteenth lap, Sean Harper made his presence known, laying down a fierce sprint out of turn four, and across the line in FIRST to take the victory in the fat tire crit. Two podiums out of three races, not a bad weekend.

The next day the boys in Blue would make the trip to the Roswell Nalley criterium, stop #2 in the USA Crit series.
The Nalley race was at its usual swift pace, with the Myogenesis team patrolling the front, and staying in good position. With 4 laps to go, Cleve Blackwell was taken down in a crash. When the crash happened, a small but dangerous break went. So the remaining team members moved to the front to do their share of work to pull it back. With the help of Land Rover / Seimans, it was successfully brought back, and it was time for Casey to do his thing bringing home 2nd. Another podium for the weekend. Man we could get used to this (as we should, since it seems to be a weekly occurrence). In the Pro/1 race Big Jon toed the line with the likes of Gord Fraser, JJ Haedo et. al. Jon looked comfortable the entire race and had a good finish against these world class racers.

Wednesday would see Cleve and Jon pack up the ride and head to South Carolina for the next three installments of the crit series. The boys held there own once again with several impressive finishes. Saturday, Myogenesis packed up the Landmark Dodge Jeep Cherokee, and made the trek to Anniston, Al. for the final race of the series. In the 2’s race, Myogenesis was intent on making a statement. They were indeed successful in doing so. Riding at close to full strength, it was the Myogenesis show. Staying at the front and making it their race, attack after attack was sent off. Cleve Blackwell, David Hall, Brady Rogers, and Travis Sherman all being very active players, but to no avail. With nothing sticking, we once again moved Casey and David to the front for the sprint, but Cleve had another card up his sleeve. With two laps to go, he laid his card out, and it seemed to be the winning move, but was caught with just two corners to go. Coming out of turn four Casey hit the after burners, coming home with third, and David in eighth. On the starting line for Myogenesis in the Pro/1 race would be Jon Atkins, Cleve Blackwell, Chad Madan, Travis Sherman, and Ron Williams. The boys had a very good race, again, against the world class competition. Jon and Chad both finishing in the front part of the race, which is quite a feat in itself. Speeds in this race hovered around the 30 MPH AVERAGE mark. These guys were flying. Like I said earlier…the podiums keep coming, definitely putting Myogenesis in the spotlight as the team to be watched. Looks like the great start early in the year is continuing to roll. Look for the boys in Blue pushing their Cane Creek, Maxxis outfitted Blue Competition Cycles rides, onto a podium near you in the future.

Once again, the crew at Myogenesis has been affected by Cancer. This time touching one of our own racers family members. Jon Atkins mother, Joan Atkins, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since her diagnosis, she has had surgery, and is recovering and resting well. We ask that you all keep her in your prayers. We all know she’ll get through this, she’s a tough one. Those of you that know Jon, can see where he gets his fight and tenacity from. This again solidifies our reason for working with Camp Sunshine (www.mycampsunshine.com) . In the very near future, we will have a link on our web site that will allow you to make a tax exempt donation to this great organization. In the meantime, if you have any questions, or would like to donate, just ask any members of the Myogenesis Nutrition cycling team.

Until next time from the Savannah Georgia Cup race………CIAO
