Georgia Outdoors Georgia Outdoors on Georgia Public Broadcasting aired a show on cycling in Georgia this past week. Sorry for not having the link up, I didn't know about it until the last minute. I watched it last night and really enjoyed it. The video is online and is about 20 minutes. Here is the video.

Ride to the Capitol The Georgia Rides to the Capitol will be on March 11th. This year there will be two official routes from Roswell and Decatur. Other bike shops and organizations are riding from different points. I've done the rally both years; it's a great time! Come out and show your state legislators that you support cycling in Georgia!

2-8-2008 Hincapie Barkley Development Team Launched A new development squad has been announced in the USA. Hincapie Sportswear Inc., clothing manufacturer, and advertising agency Barkley, have partnered up to create the Hincapie Barkley Development Team, which will consist of eleven 15-23 year-old development riders and four elite racers. The team based out of Greenville, S.C., has put into place an experienced-rider mentoring programme that allows U23/Junior riders to race and train with experienced Pro/Elite cyclists. The mentors will provide guidance in every aspect of the sport, including training techniques, racing strategy, nutrition and sports psychology. The Hincapie Barkley Development Team will participate in various sanctioned USA Cycling events throughout the year. "We have promoted cycling on many levels from event promotion to race team management, and this is the next step in our support of the sport," said Rich Hincapie, Hincapie Barkley team leader and president of Hincapie Sportswear. "My brother, George, and I understand how far you can go in this sport when you have quality opportunities, and we're proud to provide support to these talented junior cyclists."  The aim of the Hincapie Barkley Development Team is to provide the missing link between casual competition and racing on the elite pro level. Racers on the Hincapie Barkley Team will be groomed and managed to help them graduate from the amateur ranks into the pro peloton.
"Two-time National Champion Craig Lewis was a rider on our Hincapie Elite Team several years ago," said Rich Hincapie. "He recently signed a professional contract to ride with George on Team High Road (formerly T-Mobile). In addition to Craig's success, our Elite Team has also developed numerous National and World Champions, so we know the programme can succeed."

The Hincapie Barkley development team roster is:

2-13-2008 Intermediate Women's MTB Clinic From Sorella Norma Rainwater: "I am conducting a Sorella clinic at Gainesville College on Saturday, Feb 16th. It will start at 12 and end at 2pm. Meet in the parking lot near the trail head. FREE! This was originally going to be an intermediate/duathlon clinic since we were preparing for the Women Build Duathlon the next weekend. That race has been postponed, but I'm having the clinic anyway. When I say intermediate, I just mean that whoever participates should have riden a bike at least 6 times. The topics will include: vision and balance, pedal wheelies and coaster wheelies, course inspection, and a little about how a multisport event works. We'll ride the Gainesville College course, and talk about using the "pro" lines, and practice passing and being passed. Open to anyone interested. E-mail me if you're coming so we'll know to expect you. normarainwater@charter.net"

New USAC Local Association  Alabama has it's own USAC local association now, the Alabama Cycling Association. Please visit http://www.alcycling.org/ for more information. Of course, I will still list all Alabama races on Southeastern Cycling!

Atlanta Bike Planning From the SBL Forum posted by Jett Marks: Atlanta's Bureau of Planning is seeking public input on its transportation plan . The reason I say the City is listening is they are giving fair consideration to cycling as a viable alternative to cars. You've got two ways to express your (cycling-favorable) opinion and help tip the balance in favor of cycling vs. cars:

First (and easiest) is an online survey. Within a few minutes of clicking the link above, you can tell planners you use your bike, prefer walkable communities, and support building infrastructure that helps people leave their cars in the driveway.

Second, public workshops are being held according to your Atlanta neighborhood. I'm in NPU-F (Virginia-Highland) and will be attending one the workshops scheduled for March 24-27 at City Hall East. I'd love to have company if anyone is interested in tagging along.

Government works best when its informed citizens participate in the governing process. If you can't attend the meeting, please share your opinion in the online survey. We talk about getting the number of cyclists up so we can have a bigger impact. This is where that impact strikes."

Greenville Flyer The Greenville Spring Training Series flyer is here.

The Professional Continental teams, both from the US, are Team Slipstream/Chipotle and BMC Racing. Also from the US are the two Continental teams, Bissell Pro Cycling Team (formerly Priority Health) and Georgia-based Jittery Joe's Professional Cycling Team, the only team to have raced in every Tour de Georgia."

Bikes Belong Grant to SORBA From Cyclingnews.com: "GHORBA & SORBA among Bikes Belong grant winners

"Bikes Belong awarded six grants to grassroots groups in Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington to help build new bike paths and trails.

The Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association (GHORBA) received US$10,000 to expand the trail system at Double Lake Recreation Area. The Bikes Belong grant matches a Recreational Trails Program grant and will enable the group to hire professional trailbuilders to help the all-volunteer group with their work.

The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, Woodstock Chapter (SORBA Woodstock) also received US$10,000 to expand the Blankets Creek Trail in Georgia. Plans include extending the beginner loop and creating an advanced loop with technical terrain.

Other grants went to the Whatcom Council of Governments for the Coast Millennium Trail in Bellingham, Washington; the Centerville-Washington Park District for the Iron Horse Trail near Dayton, Ohio; the Trails and Open Space Coalition for the Pikes Peak Greenway/South Tejon Street Connector in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the Yukon BMX Parents and Riders Association for Track and Trail Enhancements in Yukon, Oklahoma."'

Big Bend Cycling Festival  The Big Bend Cycling Festival in Florida will be part of the SEW Women's Series. Support a great new race!

More Good News for Blanket's Creek! From SORBA Woodstock: An Atlanta resident and avid mountain biker recently contributed $10,000 to the Blankets Creek New Trail Construction Campaign. This generous gift from Peter Genz, a partner with King & Spalding, has pushed the total contributions for this campaign to $50,000.

When making this exceptional commitment last week, Peter said, “I couldn't be more pleased to help financially those of you who are busting your butts everyday to help all of us in the riding community who enjoy your trails.”

With additional contributions that continue to come in from individuals and the proceeds from the Dirty Duathlon race and fundraising event on March 22, SORBA Woodstock will be able to continue to add trails to the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Trail System. One project under consideration would add approximately two miles of trail extending from the South Loop trailhead along the east side of Blankets Creek. This is steep and rocky terrain that lends itself to a highly technical loop, possibly even a free ride area. Also under consideration is adding distance to the Dwelling Loop as it nears the end of that trail when riding clockwise.

Octane Coffee and Bikes to Rawanda April 12th, 2008, Octane Coffee in Atlanta, will be hosting and alley cat race and a spoke card art show to help raise money for the Portland based non-profit, Bikes To Rwanda. More race details coming soon, plus an online entry form for all interested racers! We will be accepting spoke cards for the open art show until March, 29th. Show will be up April 1st-12th! 2-20-2008 From the GC Blog From the Georgia Cup Blog: "2008 GC will follow USA Cycling rules; however, due to conflicts with other USA Cycling events (and other reasons) may NOT all be USA Cycling events. The choice is completely the GC's choice and will continue to use our core cycling officials for these events. There is NO need to panic! You will not notice any differences that will affect your racing or results. The GC will make these decisions on a case by case basis. Even though the event may not a USA Cycling event you are STILL eligible for upgrades! Slice of Heaven, or Apple Cinnamon Bread  This weekend, I discovered a slice of heaven, or at least some delicious apple cinnamon bread from http://www.mercier-orchards.com/. If you are ever up in Blue Ridge and near Hwy 5, you must pick some up. It is so good! You can also order if off their website. I ate an entire loaf in less than 3 days. Bad Trish!

2-23-2008 Cartecay Ride Change Sat. 2/23/08 10 am Cartecay Bikes Road Ride
Ellijay Roubaix! Meet at Cartecay BIkes in Ellijay, GA. at 10am for this great ride. No one dropped, 30 miles. Come out and have some fun with us! Thanks, Kevin 706-635-2453

Cartecay Skills Clinic Rescheduled for March 1 The Clinic and Ride will be rescheduled for Saturday 3/1/08 10am! Ladies Beginner Skills Clinic! Hey Beginner Ladies!
Do you feel skiddish and awkward on your bike? Do you lack the confidence to join in on group rides? Do you fall off your bike alot? If so, come out to Ellijay this Saturday and be a part of this clinic. If not, then please pass this info to a friend who could use it. This clinic will be a big help.

Hey Guys NOW is your perfect opportunity to help your wife attain those skills and build the confidence needed for mountain biking. This is YOUR opportunity! Cause when your wife rides lots, guess who else does! She will be your best riding partner.

http://cartecaybikes.com/announcements.aspx#a77

The Skills Clinic will be held at the Red & White Loop just 5 miles outside of Downtown Ellijay. Ladies, don't miss this clinic! Laurie is a great teacher and has the experience to back it up. She will have you riding past the men in no time.

Junior Race Clinic Please note that this is for Juniors who already have a little race experience! From Kari and Shey Linder: When: Saturday, March 8th
11:30 am - 1:30 pm  Where: International Horse Park xc trailhead
Who: Junior racers beginner to sport level who have raced before and would like to improve
What to bring: You, your bike and gear appropriate for the weather, lots of fluids to stay hydrated and snacks since young adults are ALWAYS hungry! Of course a helmet is required.

Cost: The clinic is free, but there is a $3 parking fee. If you are a beginner or sport level junior who has raced xc before and would like to improve your technique, this is the clinic for you!! (there will be beginner and first race junior’s clinics this spring, as well) http://l4adventures.blogspot.com/

Please join Kari and Shey Lindner for a fun morning of learning to fly over the dirt! We will work on bike handling skills, body position and review nutrition. Now is the time to get psyched about training and pumped for the race season. This clinic is held in an environment that is relaxed and full of encouragement. We will review a skill, then practice, practice, practice. So, be prepared to ride and have a good time.

Brief Lindner history: We have two sons and the four of us race xc, endurance, road and adventure races. (semi-pro, expert and sport levels of xc) http://l4adventures.blogspot.com/

Parents: Cycling, unlike many organized sports, requires inner motivation from our young people and does not tolerate ‘soccer’ moms and dads. This make for a FUN day at the races!! What could be better than teaching our youth to find strength in each climb and descent they accomplish, rather than looking to the crowd for a sense of worth? AND they get dirty at the same time!!!!!!! Too cool!!!! So, bring out your young racers and enjoy a couple hours of riding or hiking on the trail, while they ‘work’. We’ll have a brief talk about how to work with your young adult while training.

Thanks to Cycle Youth, Lifetime Bikes and Conte’s bike shop for supporting our young riders!

If possible, please RSVP to everett11@bellsouth.net , if not, come on out anyway!

Paulding SORBA Work Party  From Paulding SORBA: Our next work party will be March 22nd, starting at 9 AM. Meet at the Paulding Chamber Of Commerce trailhead of the Silver Comet trail.  We will be working on clearing a corridor for trail construction, a bridge, and bench cutting new single-track. Remember to bring a snack, water, gloves and to dress appropriately. The area we are working in does have some dormant poison ivy/oak so plan accordingly. Over half of the corridor has been cleared but the half that remains is between a relatively steep embankment and a swampy area."

Greenville Adds Women's Cat. 4  just got this email today--I'm hoping it applies for the whole series. Link for the Greenville Training series at the bottom. I've never done any of the G'ville races (hopefully someone who has can add their 2 cents). I've heard really good things about them--large fields, good racing, fun atmosphere. The road races are short (35-40 miles) so it's a good introduction to the awesome series ahead. They've never had a separate cat 4 race--all women have always raced together. hope some Sorellas can take advantage of this opportunity!!! Molly

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT for 2008 Spring Training Series, Greenville, SC: Online registration for events this weekend will remain open until 10:00 pm tonight (Friday 02/22/2008).

Please pre-register online if you can because we expect a huge crowd and eliminating the payment process (open my checkbook, scratch out a check, rip check, etc...) is a great time-saver. Look for the Pre-Reg line at the venue.

A Women's cat 4 group was added last night. It was made possible by a Greenville law firm, so please thank them. If you need to be moved from the Women’s group to the new Women Cat 4 group, we will take care of that at the registration table.
Thanks !!!

2-27-2008 Winter Splinter The Winter Splinter Freeride Comp was held last weekend in Newnan. The video is amazing! These guys are phenomenal!

2-28-2008 Blanket's Creek Work Party From SORBA Woodstock: First of all, thanks for all your support for this trail project. Through you, our e-mail distribution list has grow to over 100 volunteers & groups. We really appreciate your help and willingness to step forward to volunteer. We are getting closer each week to completing the new advanced trail. We have machine cut all but 100 feet. Now the machine crew is going back over the trail bed to regrade the outslope to ensure no puddling of water and to repair damage from poachers. The great news is that we only have 0.7 miles left to backcut. We are expecting a great turnout of volunteers this Saturday. With enough folks, we may be able to backcut the rest of the trail this weekend. Monster is bringing some more free drinks for us to enjoy, Delta Upsilon Fraternity from GT is showing up with a ton of members and REI is planning on bringing some of their store management and outreach team from their new upcoming store in Kennesaw. Come be a part of this spectacular event. Don't forget to bring water, sturdy boots and gloves. We will provide lunch and tools. Thanks for your support, Jay Wilkes,Vice President - SORBA Woodstock

Yargo Closed on Sat. Ft. Yargo will be closed on Saturday until 1:00 pm because of the Ditch the City Running Race.

Happy Leap Year! It comes once every four years. An extra day to ride your bike!

I'm Behind.....I am behind on posting several good things, including a great race report from Big Scott. I was in a car accident two weeks ago. Someone rear ended me. I've been dealing with that and the car repair all week. Thankfully, I'm fine and the car is finally repaired. Plus, my kitchen sink decided not to drain on Tuesday night. We have to have a very expensive new pipe installed. !*!* old plumbing in my 1970s house. Thankfully, I have a really good plumber. Throw in a few appointments at the optometrist to get fitted for contacts (yes, I'm getting older). PLUS, a two of my friends are moving across the country, and we are spending some time with them this weekend (ok, a good portion of the weekend). Then, I plan to do the Cartecay ride Sat....blah, blah, blah. Sometimes "real life" interferes. I try not to post about it, but I am VERY behind on email and getting a few things posted. It will all be up by the end of the weekend. (To my boss if you are reading this, thank you for allowing me all the time off this week! I know, I have to make it up next week.)
