5-1-2009 The Highlander Looking for another cool hang out owned by a local cyclist? Check out The Highlander near Piedmont Park in the same shopping center as Trader Joe's and the Midtown Arts Cinema on Monroe. We ate there last night before the Road to Roubaix. The huge patio is great in nice weather! The Highlander is known for their burgers. All of the guys enjoyed theirs! Chris (my other half) would like to recommend the Pete's burger with cajun spices. I had the veggie burger, which was delish! There are also several other veggie friendly entrees. Service was friendly, and there were lots of beers on draft. Local brew Sweetwater was the beer of choice with my group of friends. Stop by, and tell them Southeasterncycling.com sent you!

(Trish's note: The Highlander is a bar, no place for the kiddos. Enjoy an adult's night out!)

5-4-2009 Sunny King Crit Photos I am uploading my photos of the Sunny King Crit to http://sadlebred.smugmug.com. I have nearly 800, so check back Monday night for all of them from the Cat. 4 Men, Masters Men, Men Cat. 2/3, Pro Women, and Pro Men.

Sunny King Photos In the meantime, check out my photos on Velonews and Cyclingnews for highlights.

Thanks to SKC! Thanks to the organizers of the Sunny King Crit for having me photograph the race another year! Despite some rough early weather, it turned out to be a wonderful day. I had a lot of fun! For those that want to stay around, they also host the Cheaha Challenge on Sunday. I did a short option in order to get back from Sandy Springs. It's one of the most well supported rides I've ever done.

Sandy Springs Crit Photos Enjoy some Sandy Springs photos on Cyclingnews.com. I will have the Sandy Springs crit photos up by Monday night at http://sadlebred.smugmug.com

Ken Hanson Wins Thunderstorm Criterium at Dilworth

by Daniel Carruthers
Ken Hanson (Team Type 1) outpowered Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia) and Carlos Vargas (Team Hotel San Jose) on the uphill drag in Charlotte, N.C., Saturday, to win a tough Dilworth Criterium that only a third of the rain-drenched field managed to finish.

How it unfolded

This was Team Type 1’s first victory at the USA CRITS Speed Week Series after trying all week long to break through. Despite the absence of several top teams, in particular OUCH and Kelly Benefit Strategies, who were competing elsewhere, the racing still proved to be very competitive, with strong teams like Fly V Australia, Team Mountain Khakis, Team Type 1, Team Hotel San Jose, and Champion Porsche all represented.

The Dilworth Criterium, held around a parkland area shrouded with trees, started with 120 riders in dry, sunny conditions. The course had an uphill and downhill section that led to a hair-pin turn at the bottom, and then launched straight into a climb. Everyone knew that due to these challenging features, the race was going to be strung out. However, this happened sooner than expected when thunder clouds rolled over, and heavy rains poured down on the racers. This instantly created mayhem. There was a big pile-up down the bottom, and the field broke up as fast as the thunder clouds had arrived. Ben Kersten (Fly V) walked into the pits with his front wheel absolutely shredded.

After 20 minutes of racing, a break of four with Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V), Frank Travieso (Champion Porsche), Mark Hekman (Mtn. Khakis) and Hanson, got established. But even though the break only lasted for a short time, it managed to reduce the peloton drastically. Numerous attacks tried to go but, due to the rain, the slippery surface, and the hill, a bunch kick at the finish was ensured.

Travieso pipped Hekman at the line for $250 mid-race prime, and earned 10 points towards the series classification.

No one team had any real control of the race, and it was a gamble to see which rider would prevail in the uphill sprint. It ended up being a rider who was the boldest, strongest, and most daring and who could combine those attributes to negotiate the downhill section and the sharp turn under the pouring rain and still put himself in a good position for the hill shoot-out for the finish. That rider was Ken Hanson of Team Type 1!

He now moves up into third spot overall in the series, just 23 points adrift of Vargas, who has 1297 points. Hekman, with 1369 points, looks like he will secure the overall win provided he finishes close to Vargas at the Global BMW Sandy Springs Criterium.

The women’s pro field did not have a points-earning race at the Dilworth Criterium, so most of the top teams were absent. The final races of the USA CRITS Speed Week Series will be contested on Sunday in Sandy Springs, Ga.

For live updates on all the races, you can follow USA CRITS announcer Chad Andrews’ twitter on TotalCyclist. www.biketownspartanburg.org Full results and series standings can be found at www.usacrits.com.

5-6-2009 Bike to Work Week Bike To Work Week - Sunday May 10 - Friday May 15

* Be the envy of your co-workers as you show up to work energized instead of frustrated.
* Biking is safer and easier than you might think, and better for you than almost any other kind of commute.
* You'll soon look forward to your commute -- that's pretty unusual in Atlanta!

The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and partners including metro Atlanta Transportation Management Associations, Clean Air Campaign, Centers for Disease Control, and bike clubs and advocacy groups from across the region are combining forces this year to put on a full week of activities to celebrate Bike to Work Day 2009.

Participants will receive discounts at bike shops on commuter gear and tuneups, be entered to win fantastic prizes, get access to all the resources they need to get going and stay safe, and have the satisfaction of being part of a community of people who care about the environment, their health, and their communities, all from the seat of a bicycle!

Resources for bicyclists include Bike Trains, Bike Buddies, maps, frequently asked questions, and more. We even have something for drivers - take a quiz to test your knowledge, pledge to participate by interacting safely with cyclists, or request a free "Share the Road" yard sign!

Please visit www.biketoworkatl.org  to pledge to put your bike to work or to learn more!

Schedule of events - Sunday, May 10 - Friday, May 15

Sunday | Bike to Worship Day | congregations encouraged to bike

Monday | Get Ready: Bike Shop Night| Discounts on commuter gear & tune-ups

Tuesday | Get Your Bike Buddy Here | experienced cyclists are matched with newcomers

Wednesday | BikeFest in Woodruff Park | booths, raffles, fun. Bike shops welcome

Thursday | Bike to Work Day | Energizer Stations, Bike Trains, incentives and prizes

Friday | After-party| Celebrate Bike to Work Week

STEALING PHOTOS If a plumber came to your house to fix your sink, you would expect to pay him. Same with a professional photographer (or someone selling their art). Do you go to the grocery store, shop, and walk out without paying? That's stealing. Do you go to the mall, take clothes out of a store, and not pay? No, that's stealing. I'll say it again--STEALING PHOTOS OFF MY WEBSITE IS NOT COOL!

5-11-2009 Been Quiet Sorry for the lack of updates, but things have been really quiet the last couple of days.

Suunny King, Roswell, and Sandy Springs Photos Don't forget that I have all of my photos from Sunny King, Sandy Springs, and Roswell up at http://sadlebred.smugmug.com. You can purchase prints or download (for a small fee) a high resolution digital photo for  personal use from that website.

MTB Race Clinics 55 Nine Performance will be putting on Free MTB Race Clinics at REI June 16-17. Details are here.

Sope Creek Work Party king ahead to next month, the next work party at Sope Creek has been established for May 16. (we'll likely some small ones before then to help get the work done, but this will be the next BIG one). We're going to try something different and have folks register online. We're going to try this as a pilot for registration for the National Trails Day event on June 6 that we are partnering with REI and NPS on so please give us some feedback on this process.

Please go to http://sopecreektrails.eventbrite.com  to register for this work party. Thanks and we'll see you there!

Atlanta Bicycle Coalition The ABC has a lot going on this month with Bike To Work Week. Check out http://www.atlantabike.org.

Shop for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition From ABC: On Wednesday, May 27th the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition will receive 5% of net sales at the Ponce de Leon Whole Foods Market. Come pick up healthy and delicious groceries, dinner, or a snack and support a worthy cause with your purchase. The more you shop, the more you give! The donation will be used for the “Share the Road” public education campaign. ABC's mission is to make it safer and easier for people to ride bikes in metro Atlanta. We advocate better cycling conditions, educate drivers and cyclists on safely sharing the road, offer programs to those who already ride as well as those who would like to start, and promote biking as a healthy community-building form of transportation, recreation, and fitness.

5-13-2009 The Marietta Daily Journal had a good article on Bike Commuting this morning.

5-14-2009 Blanket's Creek Work Party  SORBA Woodstock needs your help. If you have ridden Blankets Creek in the past couple of weeks, you have noticed the mess we have on Mosquito Flats and Bite. Enough to shutdown sections because of deep puddles. We are working this Saturday, 5/16 starting at 9am to fix it. We received 2 dump trucks of crush-n-run to build turnpikes over these low lying areas. It hasn't been a problem for years because of the drought but now it is since rain has returned to normal levels. We need A LOT of volunteers to help us move it and reopen these trails. Please bring wheelbarrows if you have them. We are going to need a lot of them. Lunch will be provided. Bring water and gloves. Once again thanks for all your support on helping maintain YOUR trails. Jay Wilkes

5-21-2009 Ride of Silence The MDJ has coverage of Marietta's Ride of Silence. Trish's Note: Didn't even know Marietta had a Ride of Silence. I didn't hear about it. Does anyone remember when Tyler Farrar's (Garmin-Slipstream) father was hit by a car out in Washington state and paralyzed? Apparently, Tyler's uncle (dad's brother) live in Cobb County. Here is a quote from the article: "Robert Farrar rode in honor of his brother, Dr. Ed Farrar, who was hit by a car on Oct. 22 while riding in Wenatchee, Wash. The accident left Ed Farrar, a spine surgeon, paralyzed from the chest down. Prior to the accident, he rode more than 200 miles on his bike a week. His oldest son, Tyler Farrar, is a professional cyclist."I'm riding to raise the awareness of people that there are cyclists riding on the road," Robert Farrar said. "It's amazing how abusive people can be of cyclists on the road. We're just trying to obey the rules of the road."

They offer party invitations, children's birth announcements, thank you cards, personalized note pads, and a full line of custom business products. You can choose from a line of ready made cards or have Ann do a full custom order. All products are created and produced in Atlanta, GA. I received my first order last week and was impressed with the fast turn around and quality of the cards and note pads. 5-28-2009 Morgan Falls Bridge Meeting From various forums:

This just in from Sandy Springs...I'm sure to get another from the NPS shortly. In case you don't know, there's a new bridge in the works that will cross the Hooch near Hyde Farm. Neighbors aren't cool with allowing bikes on the bridge b/c they see how uncaring mtn bikers are at Sope by riding on closed trails and they're afraid bikers will do the same at Hyde Farm.

Due to strong interest, the National Park Service (NPS) and The Sandy Springs Conservancy will host a second public meeting to present preliminary alternatives for the proposed bicycle/pedestrian bridge and connective trails at Morgan Falls.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) is working with The Sandy Springs Conservancy, City of Sandy Springs and Cobb County on preliminary plans to construct a bridge below Morgan Falls Dam. The bridge would be for pedestrian and possibly bicycle use only. It would be constructed as a free span bridge over the Chattahoochee River and would connect visitors to the Sandy Springs' riverside parks at Morgan Falls with National Park Service land in Cobb County below Hyde Farm. Funding for the bridge has not yet been obtained, but the planning and public review process began in March 2009. In addition to the bridge, the plan will evaluate possible trail connections to Hyde Farm and the Johnson Ferry North unit of CRNRA.

For more information on the project, go to www.sandyspringsconservancy.org.  Please plan to attend this important meeting, and distribute this note to members of your organization and others who would be interested.
