Ride for David

On Saturday, December 14, 2002 over 400 cyclists braved sub-35 degree temperatures to give their support at the David Martin Memorial Ride. David Martin was a Cat. 1 rider on the Genesis team that was killed by a drunk driver on November 4 near Emerson, GA while he was on a training ride. The Ride for David was a benefit for his widow and stepson. David is deeply missed by the Atlanta cycling community. Maureen Blyer, who was killed on West Paces Ferry Rd. in September, was also remembered. John Floyd, a 15 year old racer, who was hit by a car on Northside Drive made an appearance. He was an instant celebrity! George Hincapie (US Postal Service) gave him an autographed jersey, and John signed autographs for the riders.

Police escorted riders around the 18 mile loop though Buckhead and Vinings. Some motorists honked in support, but one incident was disturbing. As a volunteer was stopping traffic at a light, a Volvo tried to go around the volunteer and nearly plowed into some riders. What makes people so impatient that they cannot wait 30 seconds to get to their destination? This is what we are trying to change.
