The Top 10 Signs You Are A Female Bike Racer in the Rural Southeast: (Written by an anonymous friend  of mine that just moved here from the west coast. Reposted with her permission.)
10. You make a point of wearing your blaze-orange wind vest during deer season.
9. You hear country music, and especially "Sweet Home Alabama", played repeatedly in the weight room.
8. You routinely change flats with a fifty-cow audience.
7. The convenience store lady in the small Tobacco Town, NC (50 miles from anywhere) has never seen cyclists come through her store before, but treats you like long-lost family anyway.
6. You don't spend your ride time dodging cell phone-wielding commuters, you spend it dodging guys in dirty pickup trucks with gun racks. (Carefully-- 90% of the time, the gun racks have guns in them which may or may not be loaded.)
5. When you break up the inevitable discussion between a dirty-pickup-truck guy and your male riding buddy about exactly who got cut off by whom, you do it by implying that it just wouldn't be gentlemanly to have a fistfight in front of a lady (namely, you).... and that tactic works.
4. Five words: Vicious Farm Dog Sprint Prime. (Farm dogs run loose, and they can be alarmingly fast.)
3. When a farm dog sprint prime is coming up, the guys consider it gentlemanly to ride on the outside, between you and the pursuing farm dogs.
2. When you bonk, someone offers you a "pa'ar bar".
1. Your buddy behind you on a steep descent yells "Yeeehaw!" when he cleans it.

3-12-2004 BVC Team Roster The Buckhead Velo Club (BVC) from Atlanta, Georgia, USA is proud to announce the addition of Jake’s Ice Cream (www.jakesicecream.com) as its title sponsor for 2004. The BVC is pleased to be associated with Jake’s whose ice cream is frequently voted the best in Atlanta. Returning for its second year of support, Peachtree Bikes (www.peachtreebikes.com) serves as the team bike shop sponsor. The team will focus primarily on Masters events in the Southeast. James Bailey, Scott Bass, Rich Bayman, Rusty Bryson, Mike Cawthon, Eric Davis, Scott DeMyer, Dominique Desmonts, Gordon Ferris, Greg Fink, Stephen Lamphier, Jim Lemken, Mark Trimble, and Wayne Wills.

Bye Bye Chicopee Ag Center :( :( From SORBA: Chicopee AG Center will close on or about August 1st, 2004. The Chiocpee Woods Park Commission is exchanging the property for more desirable land adjacent to the park. A school will be built on the AG Center site. SORBA supports this development.
In the long run we will have a better trail system in Chicopee Woods of over twenty miles.

Why SORBA Supports the Chicopee Land Swap.
1. The Chicopee Woods Area Park Commission will compensate SORBA $99,500 for the loss of the Ag Center trail.

2. Mountain bikers will have one trailhead with 20+ miles of singletrack. SORBA has already marked eight miles of new trail in Chicopee Woods and will work with the Park Commission to supervise new construction.

3. The new trail system will have greater connectivity with other trails (Gainesville College) via the proposed Central Hall Multi-use Trail.

4. The new trail will be put into a conservation easement by the Chicopee Woods Area Park Commission, which will make it far more difficult to ever be developed for any purpose.

5. The new property added to the park will help preserve the watershed; this, in turn, protects all of Chicopee Woods, the jewel in the crown of Hall County Greenspace.

6. The land swap is good for education and for taxpayers, since the new Chicopee Woods elementary school will be built on property that cost much less than the original $800,000 budgeted.

Hincapie Selling House "This report filed March 11, 2004 Greenville, SC-Sports fans rarely get an opportunity to live in the shadow of one of their favorite professional sports heroes. However, some
lucky cycling fan can now make that dream a reality for a $309,000 price tag. One of America's most talented professional bicycle racers, George Hincapie, is selling his home atop Paris Mountain in Greenville, South Carolina. Hincapie is coming down from the mountain to move closer to friends and family in Greenville's thriving and progressive downtown area. Hincapie's three bedroom, two and a half bath custom home features phenomenal views across the Blue Ridge escarpment of the Appalachian Mountains. The home's location has provided George with a training environment ideally suited toward preparing for the strenuous European racing season. The residence sits about one-quarter-mile from one of the region's most popular and challenging bicycling routes. The contemporary styled dwelling's Living Room, Kitchen, Dining Room and Master Bedroom all feature dramatic vaulted ceilings. At the heart of the house is a large stone fireplace whose chimney rises nearly eighteen feet before meeting the cedar paneled Living room ceiling. The kitchen features custom stone countertops and stainless appliances throughout. The home is a relaxing escape from the ordinary yet is just minutes from Greenville's downtown and is only a short drive from Greenville International Airport. Hincapie's presence has been instrumental in Greenville's rise to prominence in the international cycling community. The world's best cyclists have raced and trained in Greenville, including five-time Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong. Lance raced through Greenville in two Tour DuPont Stages on his way to victory. Hincapie, a teammate of Armstrong on the U.S. Postal Pro Cycling Team is America's most accomplished European Classics racer and has made the upstate city his permanent domestic home base. George has raced in Greenville on numerous occasions and can often be spotted training in the foothills and mountains just north of the city. Other world class cyclists like Tour veterans Bobby Julich, Frankie Andreau, Kevin Livingston and Olympic champion Marty
Nothstein have also competed or trained in Greenville. For more than 16 years, Greenville has been a fixture on the both the professional and recreational cycling map in part because of the sterling reputation and warm hospitality of the local cycling community. Greenville routinely draws quality riders from 30 states and over 14 countries to its top cycling events. The Assault on Mt. Mitchell and the Michelin Cycling Classic have respectively become staples on the national recreational and racing calendars. In June 2003 Greenville, South Carolina was recognized by Bike Magazine as one of the top five cities for bicycling in the United States. For more information, please visit www.HomesByJohnEdwards.com."

Hincapie Rider KilledFrom George Heagerty: "This email is an invitation for all cyclists who would like to share their condolences for Garrett Wonders. If you are in the Charlotte area please join us at SouthPark Cycles Bike Shop on Wednesday, March 17 at 6:00 PM. for a memorial social. We plan to share memories of Garrett for his wife Teri with a short video clip of special moments and memories of Garrett. Garrett was a compassionate person and an amazing cyclist whose life was cut short by a reckless driver in Charleston, SC. Garrett had just joined the Hincapie Sportswear / Bianchi Cycling Team and raced last year with the Carolina Volkswagen Team. Garrett worked for the Navy as a Nuclear Physicist
and was a member of the US Armed Forces Cycling Team that competed in Europe and several Elite national races. He was notorious for his long breakaways and relentless pulls as a Cat 1 racer. Garrett encouraged a lot of people to get involved in the sport of cycling at all levels and always found pleasure
in the success of his friends and teammates before his own. Teri Wonders has set up a Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund for a special cycling scholarship. You can send a contribution to the following address: Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund, Acct 1154012, POB 190012, N Charleston, SC 29419."

Brooks Don't forget that the Brooks Spring Omnium is this coming weekend. You must preregister for Sunday's Time Trial. There will be no onsite registration.]

Festival of Speed I talked to one of the Atlantans that went to the NRC races the Festival of Speed in Orlando, FL this weekend. She said that the races were very fast. She mentioned that in the men's race of about 130 starters, only 25 or so finished. She also said that one Atlanta woman was "in the money" for Saturday night's twilight crit. I'll try to confirm that this week.

Better Local Race Coverage A few people have emailed me about why I don't do more local race coverage. One reason: no one helps me! Don't forget that SE Cycling is a one woman operation. I could really use help covering the local races! Have a few pictures? Have a race report? Want to do a brief overview of the weekend of racing? Please do! I would love to have some help. Any volunteers? Drop me a note. As I always say, my life, my training, and my racing come before the website. It's not selfish :), those are my priorities. This website is my way of giving back. With me focusing more on mountain biking this year, it will be important for the roadies out there to help keep me updated on the road events, trackies the track situation, and mountain bikers the mtb races. Get involved...get some publicity for yourself and your team! A few hundred people visit SE Cycling every day. Wouldn't it be cool to have your name on an article or a photo credit?? (Note: SE Cycling does not pay for articles. Any authors or photographers receive full credit and the gratitude of the web chick.) Thanks to those few (you know who you are!) that give me tidbits or links to their teams' race reports.

3-16-2004 American Criterium Championship Series The second year of the American Criterium Championship Series (ACCS) has been announced. The seven race series starting April 24th in Athens, GA will once again highlight the top criteriums in the country. The ACCS features both men and women’s events at each race location. The ACCS was created to bring positive attention to the most popular form of American cycling, the criterium. "We feel if cycling is really going to become a popular sport to the general public, it will do so because of the criterium," said Claredon Cup Director, Rob Laybourn. "Americans seem to like things that are fast paced, right now, and full of action; that is what a criterium is." Another goal of the ACCS is to create a series unique to the United States. "Athletes can compete in a series of high-caliber events throughout the Nation for position recognition. This in turn will create a forum to showcase these athletes to the rest of the nation using a uniformed means of comparison,” said Athens Twilight Director Gene Dixon.

The response to the ACCS has been overwhelming. "I'm really glad there will be the ACCS again this year. There has been a need for a series like this in America. Criterium racing is what American bike racing is all about. The ACCS includes the most prestigious, long standing, and exciting criteriums in the country. This year I am with a new team, Jelly Belly, and one of my goals is to win the ACCS again," Men's 2003 Champion Jonas Carney said. This year's participating events and race dates are: April 24 - Athens Twilight, Athens, GA, May 30 - Clarendon Cup, Arlington, VA, May 31 - Tour of Somerville, Somerville, NJ, June 27 - Wendy's International Cycling Classic, Grandview Heights, OH, (Complete Race Dates June 25-27), July 9 - The International Cycling Classic/Superweek, Wisconsin, (Complete Race Dates July 9-25), August 15 - Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, Manhattan Beach, CA, August 29 - Chris Thater Memorial Criterium, Binghamton, NY More information can be found at: www.americancrit.com.

Big Creek Comments Needed From SORBA RAMBO: "Hello Big Creek Park Patrons, your input to Roswell P&R is needed. SORBA/RAMBO maintains the multi-use trail system of Roswell's newest park,
Big Creek Park. Big Creek is located off of Old Alabama Road and was officially opened last November. For the hundreds of volunteers and patrons, the blood, sweat and Yellow Jacket stings it took to build the
1.4 mile Beginner's Loop was well worth the effort. Walkers, joggers, folks of all ages and their canine pals as well as the bicyclists responsible for the building and maintenance of this wonderful trail, all enjoy the trail system daily. SORBA/RAMBO President Bob Grieco explains, "If you have enjoyed your Big Creek experience, send your opinion to Roswell (Parks and Rec.). They need to hear positive experiences from park users if we are to continue to receive the support we need for future projects." Use your spare minutes wisely and give your Big Creek opinion now to: Roswell Parks & Recreation Director, Joe Glover, His e-mail is jglover@ci.roswell.ga.us, Phone: 770/641-3705; Fax: 770/641-3841. SORBA/RAMBO appreciates your positive response for Big Creek's beginner loop trail. It took over 3,000 hours to build last year. Many more hours will be spent enjoying it."

BTD Racing Opens Season (www.backtodirt.com) BTD Racing began the 2004 season right where it had left off at the end of the 2003 Cross campaign. Fuji southeast/BTD Racing athletes, Charlie Pendry, Charlie Storm, and Daniel Doub, dominated the 2003 Southeastern cross scene, winning all but one North Carolina Cyclocross Series event. Charlie Storm and Daniel Doub then went on to Elite Cross Nationals to place 14th and 30th in the men’s Elite race. Two rest weeks and 10 weeks of training later, BTD Racing was back to work at an early NORBA National March 11-14 in Waco, TX. The weekend began with the writing of a new chapter in the history of Southeastern Cycling. Southeastern seasoned pro, Charlie Storm, won the first ever NORBA Marathon Cross Country race. Storm won the 54-mile event in 3:58:00, ten minutes ahead of second place. The remainder of the weekend involved Storm and Charlie Pendry Competing in the three event Mountain Bike Stage race. Charlie Pendry, a focused racer, who knows how to peak for the more critical climbing races later this summer, came to Waco to test his early season strength and endurance fitness and defend his cross country starting position for the summer events. Pendry shook out the winter legs to place 41st in the stage one TT and 39th in the stage two short track among the 85 rider men’s pro field. On Sunday, Charlie Pendry rode a controlled effort to place 40th in the Cross-country race. BTD Racing expects big results out of Pendry when the NORBA circuit hits the mountains this summer. Charlie Storm, still a little sluggish from the Marathon event, finished 47th in the cross-country race. BTD’s Dan Doub was home this weekend saving his vacation time for the last 6 NMBS races.

SC Governor Announces Bike Ride Details  THREE-DAY TREK FROM UPSTATE TO COAST TO MARK INNAUGURAL "FAMILY FITNESS CHALLENGE" Columbia, S.C. – March 18, 2004 – Gov. Mark Sanford today announced plans for his cross-state bike ride, which he outlined in his 2004
State of the State address. Gov. Sanford will begin his trip on May 14 in Spartanburg County, and will bike for a total of 160 miles over the course of three days, ending the trip in North Charleston on May 16. The purpose of the ride, Gov. Sanford said, is to encourage South Carolinians to make better health choices in their day-to-day lives. "A big part of our quality of life in South Carolina goes back to how we look and feel as a state, and the fact is that too many of us eat the wrong things and don't get enough exercise, leading to our state being near the top of the list for a whole host of health problems due to unhealthy lifestyles," Gov. Sanford said. "This bike ride is all about challenging folks to be just a little bit more active every day."

The bike ride will be the first of Gov. Sanford's "Family Fitness Challenges," yearly events designed to promote healthy lifestyles among the state's residents. This year's challenge will lead participants on a 60-mile ride from Spartanburg to Little Mountain on May 14; a 50-mile ride from Columbia to Santee on May 15; and a 50-mile ride from Santee to North Charleston on May 16. "Whether you come out and ride five blocks, five miles or 50 miles, I'd challenge all South Carolinians to come meet up with me, Jenny and the boys and take this first step toward a fitter state – and if biking isn't your thing, we'd still love to see folks come out and walk, jog or even rollerblade for a few blocks," Gov. Sanford said. Details of the Governor's Family Fitness Challenge can be found by logging on to www.scgovernor.com. In addition to route details and maps, the site contains South Carolina health facts, and information about some of the destinations the route will pass through. Future
updates to the site will include weekly health and fitness tips, as well as shorter "Family Fun Routes." People logging on to the Web site can also register their interest so that they can receive future updates. http://www.scgovernor.com/interior.asp?sitecontentid=47.

Vintage Bike Swap/Show On March 28, there will be a Classic Bike Swap and Show in Marietta at the National Guard Armory. For more details visit the BCA website and click on Classic Bike Show at the top of the page.

Tour De Georgia News ALPHARETTA, Ga. (March 19, 2004) – Representative Chuck Martin of Alpharetta today proclaimed April 25, 2004 will be Dodge Tour de Georgia Day in the city. Rep.
Martin made the declaration due to the fact that record crowds (over 50,000 people) are expected to visit Alpharetta that day to see the Grand Finale of Stage 7. TheDodge Tour de Georgia, the premier professional cycling stage race in America, will be the only U.S. cycling stage race in which five-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will compete this year.  The route for the final stage, Stage 7, of the weeklong race will begin on Sunday, April 25 at 1:00 p.m. in front of Thunder Road USA, Georgia's official racing Hall of Fame, in Dawsonville. The cyclists will wind their way 88 miles through Pickens, Cherokee and Fulton counties, passing through such towns as Holcomb, Marble Hill, Tate, Nelson, Ball Ground, Hightower, Coal Mountain and Cumming before reaching Alpharetta at an estimated time of 4:00 p.m.

Once in Alpharetta, the cyclists will race four circuit laps of 3.85 miles along Lakeview Parkway, Morrison Parkway, Westside Parkway and Haynes Bridge roads before finishing on Morrison Parkway. A "Grand Finale" of festive events and activities will be held in Alpharetta to celebrate the conclusion of the six-day race, including recognition for the Stage 7 winner and the jersey presentation ceremony for the best team, best climber, best sprinter and the overall (General Classification) Dodge Tour winner.

"The Alpharetta stage will be an excellent conclusion to a well-balanced stage race", said Chris Carmichael, founder and chairman of Carmichael Training Systems and coach for Lance Armstrong, who will be competing with the USPS Pro Cycling team. "With a 3.85-mile circuit at the end, it's going to be fast, and everyone will be fighting for the stage win. . . Winning this last stage carries a lot of prestige."  Carmichael adds, "What's great is that one of the best-known athletes in the world will be racing on the roads of Georgia and Alpharetta, and he's also going for something no human has ever done, " referring to Lance seeking his sixth consecutive Tour de France victory later this year. "This is an event that can help him achieve that objective. He wouldn't be here if it wasn't a good springboard to ‘Number Six'." In the finish line area spectators will enjoy the Healthy Georgia Expo, providing health screenings and interactive displays to promote the Georgia Cancer Coalition, the beneficiary organization for the Dodge Tour de Georgia. Displays will be provided by the American Cancer Society, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Fulton County Health and Wellness Program and the Department of Human Resources. Local businesses will be represented at the Expo with a variety of children's activities, such as face painting, a moonwalk, and youth bicycle races, sponsored by Roswell Bicycles. Spectators can watch the race and enjoy the Healthy Georgia Expo for free. "Alpharetta's Grand Finale offers sports enthusiasts the opportunity to see one of the world's greatest cyclists compete up close and personal. The four finishing circuits give the fans four times the exposure to all the cyclists," said DeSales Wagster, president & CEO of the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Along with the spectacle of 128 cyclists racing along our streets, visitors may enjoy the finest food, fun, entertainment and important health related exhibitions."

For additional information on Alpharetta and the "Grand Finale" of the 2004 Dodge Tour de Georgia please visit www.awesomealpharetta.com. Trish's note: Almost more than anything I've seen from the other cities, Alpharetta is really getting behind the TdG. The city has a history of hosting world class sporting events, especially multi-sport events. I expect the final TdG stage to be fantastic! I'll be there!

Weekly World Championships From: The Commissaire, To: Minions of the Atlanta Peloton, Upon consulting with the Time & Frequency Division of the Physics Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, The Hawkins Institute, and the Solar Analysis Bureau of the National Space
Science Data Center, we hereby decree that Daylight Saving Time will begin at 02:00 AM ET on Sunday, April 4. A full regression analysis of sunrise / sunset times by specific longitude / latitude is available upon request - however - if you actually request this, you will receive merciless retribution from this esteemed body, and be scorned forever by your peers. As has become practice over the past several years, this e-mail serves as official notice of the advent of the in-town ride schedule, the "Weekly World Championships". Therein, the 2004 ride schedule will start as follows:

Tuesday 04/06/04 - Sandy Springs Ride - 06:30 PM ET (Short Option - no
Three Hump Loop - on 04/06/04, 04/13/04 04/20/04 & 04/27/04)
Wednesday 04/07/04 - The Peachtree Battle - 06:30 PM ET
Thursday 04/08/04 - The New Chastain Ride - 06:30 PM ET
Saturday 04/10/04 - The Tucker Ride - 09:00 AM ET (NOTE - RIDE START TIME
MOVES UP ONE HOUR FROM 10:00 AM ET TO 09:00 AM ET)
Be advised that planned road construction may impact some of the routes during the course of the year. Currently, the bridge on Powers Ferry Road near the bottom of Londonberry is closed through May, which will require a detour on the Chastain Ride. In addition, several projects are scheduled along Mount Vernon Highway for late Spring and early Summer, which may impact the Sandy Springs ride. There are several other regularly scheduled rides which also merit recognition. The Old Chastain Ride starts each Saturday at the Amphitheater Parking Lot at 11:00 AM ET. The Sunday Ride - aka "The Fun Bunch" - continues a long standing tradition and an excellent rotation (check weekly e-mail from Gregg Limbird and / or sundayride@yahoogroups.com) of some of the best rides in the area, all of
which start promptly at 09:00 AM ET. We are all very fortunate to have some terrific rides in the midst of such a large metropolitan area. Let's all make a special effort to keep these events fun and safe this year. See you on the roads! -Todd Fryburger Trish's Note: These rides are considered fast training rides for racers only. There is no ride leader, there are no maps. Expect to get dropped. These rides are NOT for the casual rider. Expect averages of 23++ mph.

Time Change With the time change coming up, I thought it would be good to remind everyone about group ride etiquette.

If you are a beginner, please practice handling your bike before coming to a group training ride. It isn't safe for anyone if there are people that do not have basic bike handling skills riding in a large group. The Southern Bicycle League offers many wonderful beginner group rides to hone your pack skills. Remember to be prepared for the ride. Bring water, food, and a pump and spare tube(s). Riders don't mind helping one another, but it is always safest to come prepared. Don't forget your clothes. Local bike shops carry extensive lines of  clothing. Most riders don't "loan out" clothing.

Group ride etiquette:

1. Hold your line. Do not wander into someone else's "ride space." To quote the movie Dirty Dancing, "This is my dance space. This is your dance space. You don't come into mine, and I don't come into yours." Do not ride all over the road. If you are going to change position, look around before "darting" to your new position. Be predictable! Don't be a squirrel.

2. Do NOT ride in your aerobars in a group. It is dangerous, and you could take out yourself and the rest of the group. You do not have as much control over your bike while in aerobars. If it is too much of a temptation, remove your aerobars for group rides.

3. Do not yell rude words or make rude gestures towards cars. They are bigger than you. You will lose the fight. Be nice to fellow road users even if they aren't.

4. When in a paceline, always pull off to the left. If you pull off to the right, you can hurt yourself by running into a curb, grass, gravel, and bus stop signs.

5. Do not take both hands off of the bars when riding in the pack. Drift to the back to take your jacket off, eat, whatever. If you run over something and lose control of your bike, you will probably go down.

6. Please point out pot holes and other road debris, but do NOT swerve around it. See #1-HOLD YOUR LINE.

7. If you are stopping or slowing down, yell "stopping" or "slowing down," so that riders behind you can safely apply their brakes.

8. Do not cross the yellow line. Cars are bigger than you, and you will get squashed. When you cross the yellow line, you cause the accident, not the car. There have been several people hit in Atlanta in the last two years when they crossed that magic line. Don't chance it. We want to see everyone week after week!
