Boneshaker's Tundra Time Trial

February 9, 2003
by Trish Albert

The Boneshaker's Tundra Time Trial was held on Sunday, February 9th at the Seaboard Avenue trailhead on the Silver Comet. Riders were to do a course of 9.2 miles out and back to the Paulding County Chamber of Commerce Trailhead. Those that prerode the course knew that a long uphill grade was in store for most of the way out. On the way back, they would be going down the same grade. Speeds were expected to reach 30 mph as the riders neared the end of the course. Volunteers from the Boneshaker's Cycling Team ensured that everything ran smoothly. Nearly 55 riders battled the course to see who would win the coveted Golden Hammer Award for the fastest time.

Topping the Master's category was Dan Coy (Fulton Flyers). Dan is known as time trial specialist and is a past TT state champion. Tom Hutchenson was 2nd.

In the Cat. 5 division, Genesis Scuba Junior James Peterman beat out Erik Koep (Dish Network) by nearly 45 seconds. Chad Davies (Bike Tech) took third.

The Cat 4 division saw Jason Collum (Reality Bikes) taking the top spot with Brad Bowman in second. Well known area racer Dub Smith (Trek/VW/NARC) took third.

The women's division had 6 entrants. Triathletes Allyson Brandt and Carole Sharpless (All 3 Sports) were 1st and 2nd with Cat. 4 road racer Elizabeth Gallo (Trek/VW/NARC) taking third place.

John McWhorter (Boneshaker Bicycles) took first in the Cat. 3 division beating out second placed Richie Tolleson by nearly 5 minutes.

In the Cat. 1/2 division, Curtis Baker (Trek/VW/NARC) won by .5 seconds over Clement Newbold (PN Bicycle Club). Jamie Hyatt (The Bike Shop) took third.

The Golden Hammer award went to Mark Kebbekus (Trek/VW/NARC) for the fastest time of the day, 21:11. In second place was Saul Raisin, a 20 year old Pro with Ofoto-Lomardi Sports, with a time of 21:55. Triathlete Jason Chapman took home third place with a time of 22:42.

The "Best Turn Around of the Day Award" went to Cat. 5 former mountain biker Shawn Flemming. He executed a perfect "moto-style" turn.
