Big Creek Threatened with Development (Trish's note: I pulled this from the SORBA forum) A proposal to build a YMCA in east Roswell had rolled around the Roswell government for several years and a location at Big Creek Park was considered but removed from the discussion last year. This is no longer the situation.

Big Creek is once again threatened with the loss of approximately 12 acres of land. RAMBO is organizing the opposition to this development but Big Creek needs your voice and those of your friends and neighbors who ride, walk, run and otherwise enjoy the trails in these 80 acres of green space in the middle of a city. While RAMBO has an interest in maintaining the existing trail system, the larger view we champion encompasses them: Big Creek Park is the only natural area east of GA 400 that provides the opportunity for certain outdoor recreations and exercise. Although RAMBO understands the desire for a natatorium in the east Roswell area, it does not understand the desire to reduce and damage a unique natural resource to achieve this. This is why Big Creek must be defended.

There is another aspect that Roswell residents should also be concerned about: the Mayor and City Council plan to give the land to the YMCA for absolutely nothing—and fund part of the construction cost—without input from the public and the Parks and Recreation staff. The only monetary benefit of this multi-million dollar transaction to the residents of Roswell would be to those residents who choose to become members of the YMCA; the one-time “Joining Fee”—which ranges from $58 (teen) $168 (family) at the Alpharetta YMCA—will be waived.

There is an open meeting of the Mayor, Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission scheduled from 5:30-6:30PM on Monday, November 8, in Room 220 of the Roswell City Hall. Please come and make your voice heard.

Atlanta Cycling Rides Atlanta Cycling has two weekday rides during the off-season. The rides are Tuesday and Thursday and both start at the Vinings store at 4:30 PM. Winter pace. http://www.atlantacycling.com.

Women's Group MTB Rides From SORBA Woodstock:

n Women's Day, we proudly announced a bike give away opportunity. The ladies who participated in the event on 10/16/10, were the first to earn a ticket towards a chance to win a Specialized Women's Myka FSR Comp. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=52797&scid=1000&scname=Mountain This bike give away is possible through a grant from Specialized with SORBA Woodstock to promote mountain biking to women for a healthy and active lifestyle. Group ride dates will be posted on this site each month, and when you attend a women's group ride hosted by SORBA Woodstock, you will get a ticket for a chance to win the bike. The more rides you attend, the more chances you will get to win the bike. The bike will be given away at Pedalpalooza on May 7th, 2011, at noon and the lucky winner must be present to win. This will give you plenty of opportunities to attend rides and participate in events with SORBA Woodstock. The dates and times for rides and events will be posted here. If it is raining or the trails are closed, then the rides will be canceled and rescheduled for another date when possible. All rides will begin at the times indicated on the dates below by meeting in the parking lot by the kiosk at the entrance to the trail head. Email events@sorbawoodstock.org if you have any questions.

More MTB Trails in Dahlonega From the SORBA forum (but not from SORBA) There's a 192 acre abandoned state park just south of Dahlonega that the county parks dept. is considering resurrecting and developing, and mountain biking trails are one of the possible developments. This would be a great place to put some beginner-friendly bike trails in, since the ones out at Bull Mtn. are pretty steep and gnarly.

Please take this survey that the local newspaper has put together to voice your opinion and promote mountain bike developement (especially if you live nearby): http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XNRHCNQ

Georgia Bikes News Hello from Georgia Bikes! It has been a while since you last heard from us, but we are happy to let you know that Geogia Bikes is back, and we are ready to get to work for Georgia's cycling community! Over the past year, Georgia Bikes has experienced some significant and exciting changes:
* We have a new Board of Directors representing all types of cyclists from around the state
* We received “Share the Road” tag  funds from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for statewide educational programs
* We have a new, full-time Executive Director

With this recent growth, we are now poised to make serious progress in improving Georgia’s bicycle laws and infrastructure, and we’re ready to make great things happen for bicycling in Georgia! Right now, our most urgent goal, in partnership with our sister organization the Georgia Bikes Alliance, is to hire a lobbyist for the upcoming legislative session.

As you already know, Georgia needs a  “3 Foot Passing” law! If you would like to see this bill passed, we have a perfect giving opportunity for you. To assist the Georgia Bikes Alliance with hiring a lobbyist to fight for better bicycling laws, please visit http://georgiabikes.org/index.php/support/donate Any amount you can contribute will go a long way toward ensuring that “3 Foot Passing” becomes the law in Georgia. We thank you for your continuing support of better bicycling in Georgia.

Because of the GOHS grant and your generous contributions, we are ready to expand Georgia’s bicycling facilities, improve public awareness of cyclists’ rights and responsibilities, and create a safer environment for all types of cycling. Check out our new and improved website http://georgiabikes.org, and stay tuned for important updates from Georgia Bikes!
