4-23-2002 Congratulations to all of the winners at the Historic Roswell Crit April 21. The crit was a huge success, and organizers told me they are hoping to have it again next year. The crit course comprised of several streets near the square in downtown Roswell and was one of the nicest crit courses I've raced on. Some of the local riders were:

Pro Men: 6 Jeff Hopkins, Choco Andea Eco Coffee
Pro/1/2/3 Women: 1 Tina Mayolo-Pic, Team DietRite, 2 Shannon Hutchinson, Atlanta Velo-Litespeed
Masters 35/45: 2 David Crowe, Peoplesoft, 6 Barry Brown, Genesis Scuba 10 Bruce Burton, Alpharetta Velo

IMBA announced the 2002 IMBA Epic Rides. Representing the Southeast will be an epic at Bull Mountain September 28-29. The Dick Lane Velodrome hosted the first of the four race series, the East Point Grand Prix. Racing was fierce. Jeff Hopkins of the Bean Team came out the winner in the Pro/Am races, and Steve Foley of Genesis/FFCC won the Cat. 4 race program. All of the details are on the DLV site.

Weekly track races are Wednesdays at the Dick Lane Velodrome. See what the phrase "No Brakes!" is all about. I did my first race on May 1st. What I learned: 1. Bring lots of ice water to drink; it's hot on the field. 2. Pins. You need pins. 3. Track racing is a LOT of fun!  The big question of the night was: How many guys from the Peoplesoft Cycling Team does it take to wrastle a snake?

8-9-2002 Added Bryan Holloway's 24 Hours of Adrenalin-Winter Park, Colorado Race Report

8-9-2002 Be Careful! *rant on* I'm sure many of you have heard about the rider that was hit by a scooter on the Buckhead Bellyache group ride on August 8th. No one knows his identity yet or his present condition. Several doctors were on the ride and tended to him while an ambulance was called. While it's not known why, he crossed over the yellow line. The scooter was near the line but on the correct side of the lane. The driver of the scooter did everything he could to avoid the cyclist. It was the cyclist who was in the wrong by crossing the yellow line, not the scooter driver. Please, PLEASE be careful on group rides. Do NOT cross the yellow line. It's dumb; it's a stupid thing to do, and why would you want to tempt fate to get hit by a vehicle bigger than you? As cyclists, we have a right to the road, but we also have a responsibility to follow traffic laws and ride safely. There have been too many accidents in the last few years involving scenarios like the one above when we cyclists get careless and cross the yellow line. It is there for a good reason. I hope the cyclist that got hit recovers and is back riding soon. *rant off*

8-30-2002 From Team Imagine MultiSport. Keep Maureen in your thoughts.

This is from Team IMS. Think positive thoughts for Maureen...

Hello Team Members,
Tonight I am sending out this e-mail with not so good news to share. We have a friend in trouble tonight and we should all keep her in our thoughts.  Earlier tonight, Maureen Blyler (most of you know her as Mo), was hit by a  car this evening while doing the Buckhead ride. The details are uncertain at  this hour but what I have been told is she was hit by a car turning left in  front of her. As far as her condition, at this hour all we know is she is in
and will be in surgery for the better part of the night. Hopefully, by the  time most of you read this in the A.M. I will know more and will let you  know. Meanwhile, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers tonight and  hope that she will recover. If you don't know Maureen, what I can tell you is  she is a great girl and a lot of fun to have around. We hope she will be out  there with us again soon.

9-3-2002 Lots of news today! Mo is doing better from the accident. The latest updates are available on the Team IMS website at http://www.teamims.org. Mo was riding the Bellyache route but was not on the group ride when the accident happened. She spent 22 hours in surgery Thursday-Friday and is now in the ICU. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

The Elite National Track Championships wrapped up this weekend in T-town, PA. Shannon Hutchinson (Atlanta Velo) placed 4th in the 500 meter time trial. Angie Vargas was 9th in the same event. Shannon was also 4th in the 5 mile Scratch Race. Angie came in right behind her in 6th. Shannon was also 6th in the Points race. Congratulations Ladies! Men's results include Adam Payne (Adrenaline) placing 10th in 1 km Time Trial.

9-6-2002 Maureen is in Hospice care after being hit a week ago Thursday on the Bellyache route. PLEASE keep her and her family in your prayers. Mo, Doug, and family--you are in the thoughts and prayers of the entire Atlanta cycling community! An update from Doug, her boyfriend, on the Team IMS Message Board said:

"Ever since last Thursday at 7:40 pm I prayed that I'd deliver better news, but I'm afraid that won't be the case. Mo has been moved out of Grady to a Hospice where she will be kept comfortable. She had a stroke after the surgery and it got progressively worse; there is nothing the doctors can do at this point. Her family wants to keep the location of the Hospice private. They and I have TRULY appreciated everyone's caring and concern, but this is a time for the family to be with Mo.
Hopefully we can make something positive come out of this.
Doug"

9-9-2002 It is with great sadness that I report that Maureen Blyler has passed away. Maureen (Mo) was struck by a 16 year old driver at the intersection of West Paces Ferry Road and Woodland Dr. on August 29. She spent 22 hours in surgery following the accident and suffered a stroke thereafter. She succummed to her injuries at 7:40 pm on Sept. 7. See the Team IMS Message Board for the latest.

9-6-2002 Friday's News

The Airport ride will be starting again Nov. 3. The new starting location will be Jeanne's Body Tech (JBT) on Peachtree Rd. in Buckhead. Chisel will send out more information in October. Rumor has it the Winter Bike League will begin on December 8th in the Athens area. Will Mineral Waters and Carparts fight it out again this year for the WBL title?

Weeknight rides for the Weekday World Cup are changing times! This from the Commissioner:

"In an effort to bring some order to what otherwise is an annual ritual of confusion, we've decided to go ahead and publish the schedule for start times for the weeknight rides up until the end of the "season" when the time changes.

Effective the week of 09/09/02, we will move the start time for the weeknight rides (Sandy Springs, Peachtree Battle & Chastain) up by 15 minutes to 06:15 PM. The Sandy Springs Ride will maintain the "Long Option" on 09/10/02, 09/17/02 & 09/24/02.

Effective the week of 09/30/02, we will move the start time for the weeknight rides (Sandy Springs, Peachtree Battle & Chastain) up another 15 minutes to 06:00 PM. The Sandy Springs Ride will then go to the "Short Option" on 10/01/02, 10/08/02, 10/15/02 & 10/22/02."

Please note that Daylight Savings Time ends this year on 10/27/02, and will start again next year on 04/06/03. Therefore, effective on 11/02/02, the Tucker Ride will move to a 10:00 AM start time.

"Finally, a word to those of you who plan on riding The Wilson 100 and the Six Gap Century with "the gang". Both of these are great centuries, and am certain the organizers would love to see a large turnout. The Wilson 100 on 09/08/02 starts at 08:00 AM. The Six Gap Century on 09/29/02 starts at 07:30 AM. Every year someone we would all like to have riding with us gets
left behind because they didn't plan accordingly, and they end spending a miserable day trying to chase down the group.

If chasing the pack isn't part of your training plan, please make certain you set aside enough time to go through your morning routine, get to the venue, and - most important of all - PAY THE ENTRY FEE! Even if you don't eat their food, drink their water, or wear their t-shirt, we owe it to the organizers to support them financially, because if it wasn't for them, the event simply wouldn't happen.

It's been another fun year for riding & racing, and we've got some good stuff of the horizon, including the Dividing Waters Omnium 09/14/02 - 09/15/02, and the Michelin series in October. Let's take advantage of the Fall before we're all stuck inside doing spin classes for five months!
Best Regards,
Todd Curtis Fryburger"

I normally do not report on the Tri scene in Atlanta, but I have to send out a huge congratulations to my friends Katrina Mitchell and Paul Gibbons on their qualifications for Ironman Hawaii. Katrina placed 5th in her division at Ironman Canada, and Paul was 12th in his age group.

SC News: The Clemson Area Transit (CAT) system now has bike racks on their busses! CAT is a free service to Clemson students and area residents. Free and you can take your bikes on the busses? What a great combination!

He has been racing in Georgia for many years. Congratulations Todd!

9-16-2002 The Beautiful Backroads Century was this past Sat. in Cartersville, GA. It is a shame that the wet weather kept more people from riding. The sags were great with PBJ sandwiches, several kinds of cookies, oranges, fruit, water and Gatorade. Each sag had either a "real" bathroom or a porta pottie. The roads are well marked, freshly paved, and gently rolling. This is on my list of "MUST DO" centuries for next year.

From an email I received. This Sunday: Some info that was passed to me. Please make it there if at all possible.

Hello All,  I know many of you have asked about getting together to do a Memorial Ride  in honor of our friend Maureen Blyler. So, next Sunday, 9/22 at 11 A.M. we  will meet at Stone Mtn. Park at the "Walk Up Parking Lot" for a ride in her  name. You have several options to either park inside the park (there is a
parking fee) or park in the town of Stone Mtn. and ride less than a
mile  into the park (no entry fee for riding into the park) and meet us there.
I hope you will come out and spend a little time riding with us and
remembering our good friend. There has also been some discussion
about  making donations in Maureen's honor to a fund or charity. We are told that  there will be a Scholarship created in her name at Emory and we will bring  details of it to the ride. If you care to contribute, feel free to bring a  little extra cash or a check. I am sure there will also be some form of food consumed following the ride at a local establishment so plan to ride and
hang around a while to enjoy some good food and fellowship!

9-17-2002 Sept. 28-29, IMBA will be hosting the Bull Mountain Epic. Registration is currently open. See the IMBA website for all the information.

9-19-2002 I just found out that Sobe-Headshok Pro Karen and her husband, Marv, will be leading a 30 mile ride at the IMBA Bull Mountain Epic. Details are at SORBA.org.

9-20-2002 MARTA has an advertisement on the Georgia Tech Flashing Sing near the Connector downtown reminding people that they now have bike racks on their busses.

There is a new ride in the Powder Springs area called Lethal Injection. It leaves at 6:30 pm from Boneshaker Bicycles on Tuesdays.

9-13-2002 Outback Bicycles in Little 5 Points is holding a Raffle for the East Point Velodrome Youth Association. Items include merchandise from EPX, Pearl Izumi, Gary Fisher, and Specialized. All of the details are here. The drawing will be held October 13 at the Candler Park Festival. You do not need to be present to win.

9-23-2002 The Airport Ride start for the winter has been moved up to October 13.  From Chisel:
"Due to the unprecedented response to the "preliminary" info regarding the 02/03 Airport Loop, the start date has been moved up to Sunday October 13.

Here is how the ride will shake out this year. There will be three official start points for the ride. At 9:45 am SHARP the ride begins at JBT (Trish's note: Jeanne's Body Tech on Peachtree St.) in Buckhead. JBT will be open for you to stock up on powerfood/drink from the PRO shop as well as use the restrooms downstairs. You will only be admitted to JBT if you are dressed in cycling clothing, if you are not a member. Please be courteous to the front desk staff as you enter.

The peleton will meander south on Peachtree and should scoop up the group leaving from the #2 start point at appox. 10am at the Georgia Grille area at Nancy Creek. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARK IN THIS RETAIL LOT.

At appox.10:25 am the peleton will leave Peachtree just south of Underground and take the right turn on to Trinity. As Trinity winds into HWY 29 at the lofts, the final group of riders will join at the #3 start point.

The ride down 29 is flat. The speed fluctuates between 18 and 23 mph but is is easy to hold wheels and chat the entire way to the left turn into the country over the railroad tracks. The first "nature break will occur on the right. 5 minutes and we're off. Unlike last year the entire group will leave together and cruise all the way through the mildly hilly and flat terrain into the town of Palmetto to the store stop.

IMPORTANT: There is NO attacking whatsoever allowed during the entire ride. NO sprinting is allowed whatsoever during the entire ride. It is too disruptive to the smooth flow that is the goal of this ride in order to help people build slow aerobic off season mileage and allow newer riders to acclimate to a group format. If you or your entire "team" are too insecure or your self esteem so low that you have to prove your worth to yourself by beating up on less advanced riders, PLEASE STAY AWAY. We do not want you, and will not tolerate your presence.

At the Chevron, the stop is 10 minutes. If you use the woods behind the store to "relieve "yourself, please go DEEP into the woods. Palmetto PD will arrest you otherwise.

As we head back on 29, usually into a headwind the peleton will stay intact and help the newer riders stay intact.

The ride distance is approx. 50 OR 70 miles from Peachtree. You will be alerted to the left turn in the country which takes you on the 70 mile option. The 50 mile option does not include the second nature break/store stop.

Hope to see you there. Please feel free to pass this along to other cyclists, triathletes, teams, and clubs.

9-25-2002 The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign is looking for any and all bicyclists who have crashed at, and because of, the abandoned railroad track crossing on DeKalb Avenue/Decatur Street in the City of Atlanta just west of Krog Street . We know of three recent bicycling victims of this unnecessary, badly angled, and poorly maintained former railroad crossing.

If you or anyone you know has crashed at this location, could you please provide basic incident and contact information to the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign at atlantabike@mindpsring.com or 404-881-1112. We will be attempting to get the situation fixed. We may also be calling on the region's bicycling community in the near future too, to help bring this to the attention of the appropriate, responsible entities.

Thank you for your time and assistance,

This weekend was the 2 Hours from Anywhere race in and around Murphy, NC. Jeanie Longo, many time World Champion from France, was present and dominated the women's 1-2-3 races. She was also in the Top 10 overall in the Time Trial Friday night. I had the pleasure of watching her race on Sunday. Jeanie turned the pedals over so smoothly; it looked effortless. She is truly one of the great women racers of all time. I also had the pleasure of speaking with her briefly as we were waiting for our payouts. I'll have a more complete report later this week with photos.

The Lula Lake 12 Hour Brow Beater was very exciting! Josh Seldman, a coach with Carmichael Training Systems, won the Solo Men. Michelle McCurdy from Decatur, GA won the Solo Women. Todd Henrickson and John Murphy powered away with the win in the Open Duo Category. Thank you to Rock City and Subaru for sponsoring this great event that raised money for the Lula Lake Land Trust!

The end of September starts "Silly Season," the time of year when riders change teams, teams fold, new teams start, riders retire, and the peloton takes it shape for next year. If you want to keep up with the Pro riders, check out Cyclingnews.com. Any major news (no rumors!) will be posted on Southeastern Cycling.

9-30-2002 Update number two: I just put up the River Falls Road Race and Two Hours From Anywhere Reports.

My beautiful custom mountain bike frame is cracked. If anyone knows where to have a scandium frame repaired please email me. The builder has already said that he is not going to stand behind his frame nor warranty it nor repair it. $1800 for a custom frame that is less than 2 years old down the drain! Email me if you are interested in all of the details.

Congratulations to Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet-Rite) of Dahlonega on winning the Miami PCT Crit! Iona Wynter (Genesis Scuba) finished 5th against the national level field. Tina was third in the PCT Final standings.

9-30-2002 How cool is this? My pictures from the 2 Hours from Anywhere Crit in Murphy, NC made Cyclingnews.com. Check them out here. I also posted the on the Two Hours report page, and I just added some pictures from the Georgia Labor Day Omnium Women's race.

10-4-2002 From Cyclingnews.com...Georgia gets a UCI Tier 3 Men's Team though 2005!

Jittery Joe's extends for three years

The Jittery Joe's Coffee Roasting Company has signed a letter of intent to  continue its support of the Jittery Joe's Cycling Team through 2005. A  formal contract will be signed in the coming months while a budget is being  worked out for 2003.

"With just a dozen pro-cycling teams in America, we're proud to be a sponsor  and we're ready to help the Jittery Joe's team establish a winning  tradition," said Jittery Joe's CEO Keith Kortemeier.

"A multi-year deal is huge for us and it will allow the team to concentrate  on results," said team director Micah Rice.

The team is supported solely from the sale of Jittery Joe's Cycling Coffee  in bike shops and outdoor stores around theUnited States. The company  recently signed a national distribution deal for Cycling Coffee that has the  brand in stores throughout the nation. Other sponsors expected to return for  2003 are Verge clothing, K2 Bikes, Maxxis tires, and Truvativ components.

Gwinnett Transportation Meeting

The county has agreed to a minimum 3 foot shoulder on all collectors and minor arteries. They've also committed to 5 foot "bikeable" shoulders on major arteries.
SR 324 in a MAJOR artery. We need to show up and hold the county to their comittment!  Plan to show up and be heard! Record your expectation that this corridor will remain "bikeable". As the Mall of Ga area continues to develop, we should expect to see a sustained ability to bike.
Jim Sandlin, Bicycle Users of Gwinnett

On Thursday October 24, 2002, the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting on the above mentioned projects. Project numbers 9531 and 9532-00 would widen SR 324 to four lanes with a raised median within the above mentioned limits. Project number 9532-01 would widen the bridge over I-85 to four lanes.

The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Ivy Creek Baptist Church, 2500 Ivy Creek Road, Buford, Georgia 30519.

The design will be presented in an informal setting. Representatives from the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation and the Georgia Department of Transportation will present designs and displays to answer questions and discuss the project.

For additional information, please call 770-822-7400.

10-15-2002 This past weekend, the Michelin Classic was held in Greenville, SC. The course was 1 km with a small hill on the backside and 4 fast corners. Candice Blickem of Cycles De Oro soloed to win the Women's 1-2-3 crit by about 30 seconds. Iona Wynter (Genesis) was 2nd, after putting up a valiant effort to chase Candice through much of the race.  In the Men's Pro/1/2 crit, Greenville resident George Hincapie and teammate Kenny Labbe (US Postal Service) teamed up with the Fairway-Cyfac boys. They could not hold off Team 7-Up, who guided Oscar Pineda to the win. The Men's Cat. 4 race was one of the most exciting of the day. Russ (Reality Bikes/Homeland Communities) launched several attacks only to be reeled in. One break away almost stuck until the bunch came back together before 5 to go. Russ wound up 12th. The highest placed Atlantan was Eric from Atlanta Cycling, who was in the Top 5. There are tons of pictures on Cyclingnews.com. Alas, I forgot my camera!

Rumor has it the party at the Hyatt got kicking around 10 pm with a rather "happy" crowd heading out to dance later in the evening, including one little known person simply known as "Gorgeous George."

Get well wishes go to the few Atlantans that wrecked this weekend.  The course was fast, wide, and open-just perfect for wrecking.

Michelin was the final road race for most of the Southeast for the year. Riders' attentions now turn to finishing the last race or two of mountain bike season, getting ready for Cyclocross, or putting their feet up for a long, well deserved rest. Head to the Airport Ride, Tucker, the Coffee and Bagel, or other area rides. The darkness of winter is almost upon us. Check out some of the Winter Rides.

There is a new club forming in the Gwinnett area. I have no information other than what is on their website. This is not the same group as the Gwinnett Touring Club.

From a mailing list I'm on. This could impact many people for the better!

I understand that Fulton County has a proposal, currently  undergoing public hearings, to put bike lanes and pedestrian walkways  along Riverside Drive from Johnson Ferry to Heards Ferry. Yes, that  is the most direct route between in-town and Columns Drive and Cobb  County. I also understand that many of the homeowners along  Riverside and the neighborhood associations that represent the neighborhoods along Riverside are voicing opposition to the project  because they fear that it is merely a ploy to get Riverside widened  and later the bike lanes and walkways will be converted into another  lane in each direction. I suggest that this would be a great improvement for cyclists and we should support it. We can worry about  it being converted later. Especially if you are a resident of Fulton County, you should write a letter to Angela Parker, Assistant Director, Department of Public Works, Fulton County, Georgia, 141 Pryor Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30303 indicating that you favor the project. The project is called the Riverside Drive Safety and Upgrade; Fulton County Project No. CM-0000-000(639): PI No. 0000639. Tell all your friends. Thanks. Phil Tribble

10-16-2002 The Daily Peloton provided some Michelin coverage pre-race and post race. Jeff Hopkins of the Bean Team reports in about Michelin on the Jittery Joes' website.

10-17-2002 I just listed some new rides and maps on the Atlanta Road Rides page. The winter schedule is shaping up. I also added a few links to the Georgia and SC pages.

Michelin Results are up!

10-9-2002 Todd Mills (Team Eastern MTB) is starting a cyclocross practice on Tuesdays in Sandy Springs. Email him for more information.

Mark McJunkin of Decatur (Thomson Stem and Seatpost Designer) has come up with a new suspension design called Critical Geometry Frame. Mark says that it "maintains the critical distances of handle bar to rear axle— this keeps
the handling of the bike quick; and the distance of the saddle to the pedal— this keeps the riders body from having to do unnatural crunch like activities that happen on a bike where the distance changes." He had some great coverage at Interbike and interested from several companies. Check out Suspend This. It carries US Patent 5,553,880.

10-21-2002 Want to practice your cross skills before racing begins Nov. 2? Come to cross practice this Sunday in Lilburn. Practice begins at 3 pm Sunday, October 27. They usually do at least one practice race over a set course. You can practice on a mountain bike, but don't forget that you must take the bar ends off per USCF rules for the races.

From I-85, take Lilburn - Indian Trail Road exit, turn East (towards Lilburn, or Hwy 29). After 3 miles you cross over US 29. Go straight another 2 miles to the first traffic light and turn right onto Arcado Road. Go about 1.5 miles to Cole Road (first traffic light) and turn left. School is about 2 miles on left (turn left into the first drive after the 3 way stop on Cole). Drive straight back to the gates, and you are looking at the main field.

Iron Man Hawaii I normally do not cover multi sport events, but 3 people from Atlanta competed in the Iron Man Hawaii this weekend. All three are super athletes. Congratulations to them all for finishing! Katrina Mitchell qualified for Kona earlier this year. She finished approximately 24th in her age group (F 25-29) with a time of 11 hours, 58 minutes. Paul Gibbons also qualified earlier this year. He finished Kona in 10 hours, 42 minutes in the M 30-35 age group. Katie Helton finished in 15 hours 39 minutes. Congratulations to the three of you!

10-30-2002 Cross News James Tomko, promoter for the Georgia Cyclocross Series, sent out this map of Saturday's course at Southern Poly Tech in Marietta. The red lines indicate the course, and the white marks are the barriers/run-ups. It looks like we have 4 barrier sections to look forward to.

SEABUG and Southstar Community Redevelopment Corporation are responsible for helping to get these in place. You can read more about the project on Southstar's webpage

Tammy Kaufman, a solo competitor at the 24 HOA, sent me a wonderful story about her experience at this year's race. Tammy has been racing solo since 2000, and the 24 Hours of Adrenaline this past weekend marked her retirement from solo competition.

10-23-2002 More Tour De Georgia News! The Tour De Georgia, a stage race to be held around Georgia in April 2003, has obtained UCI 2.3 sanctioning. Perhaps it will bring a few foreign teams to our fair state. The AJC published an article on October 22. If the link doesn't work, click here and do a search for "Lance Armstrong," which will bring the article up.

On Nov. 10th, there will be a Dual/Mountaincross race in Griffin. Prizes will be given for Sport with 100% payback for Experts. Email the promoter, Chris Pitts, for more information.

Don't forget that Daylight Savings time ends on Sunday, Oct. 27. This means the end of group rides for the year, the end of fun in the sun, and time to freeze your back side off on the Urban Assault rides with a comforting glass of your favorite brew afterwards.

10-21-2002  Trish's Weekly Rant-Let's be safe!

Just some reminders as we enter into the winter season. If you are a beginner, please practice handling your bike before coming to a group training ride. It isn't safe for anyone if there are people that do not have basic bike handling skills riding in a large group. The Southern Bicycle League offers many wonderful beginner group rides to hone your pack skills. Remember to be prepared for the ride. Bring water, food, and a pump and spare tube(s). Riders don't mind helping one another, but it is always safest to come prepared. Don't forget your warm clothes. Local bike shops carry extensive lines of winter clothing. Most riders don't "loan out" clothing.

Group ride etiquette:

1. Hold you line. Do not wander into someone else's "ride space." To quote the movie Dirty Dancing, "This is my dance space. This is your dance space. You don't come into mine, and I don't come into yours." Do not ride all over the road. If you are going to change position, look around before "darting" to your new position. Be predictable! Don't be a squirrel.

2. Do NOT ride in your aerobars in a group. It is dangerous, and you could take out yourself and the rest of the group. You do not have as much control over your bike while in aerobars. If it is too much of a temptation, remove your aerobars for group rides.

3. Do not yell rude words or make rude gestures towards cars. They are bigger than you. Be nice to fellow road users even if they aren't.

4. When in a paceline, always pull off to the left. If you pull off to the right, you can hurt yourself by running into a curb, grass, gravel, and bus stop signs.

5. Do not take both hands off of the bars when riding in the pack. Drift to the back to take your jacket off, eat, whatever. If you run over something and lose control of your bike, you will probably go down.

6. Please point out pot holes and other road debris, but do NOT swerve around it. See #1-HOLD YOUR LINE.

7. If you are stopping or slowing down, yell "stopping" or "slowing down," so that riders behind you can safely apply their brakes.

8. Do not cross the yellow line. Cars are bigger than you, and you will get squashed. When you cross the yellow line, you cause the accident, not the car. There have been several people hit in Atlanta this year when they crossed that magic line. Don't chance it. We want to see everyone week after week!

Some excellent links to group ride etiquette: Red Dirt Pedlars, Oklahoma Cyclists.

10-28-2002 Middle Georgia MTB Festival The Middle Georgia MTB Festival will be November 16-17 at the Dauset Nature Center Trails. There will be group rides, including a night ride, fishing, and a BBQ dinner.

GAP Finale The results for the GAP Finale are up. The turn out was decent considering that many racers have already wrapped up their season. Benji Coil (Peachtree Bikes) won the Expert/Pro Men's race, and Erin Winter (The Bean Team) won the Expert/Pro Women.

GAP Banquet GAP announced that the banquet would be January 19th, 2003 at the Chicopee Ag Center Activity Building. A Mexican buffet will be served. Tickets are $15 for adults. Watch Bike4Fun for all of the details.

Cyclocross News The Georgia Cyclocross series has announced a new Team competition. The Thomson Classic has also been added to the series on Nov. 23 in Macon, GA. The Thomson factory will be open for tours.

10-29-2002 Urban Assault MTB! From productmtb.com: That's right riders! It is time again for the Urban Assault ride to start back up! Now that it gets dark in the afternoon we must dust off our light sets, find the batteries to the blinkie lights, dig up the arm warmers and hit the city streets!

This is the time of year we all look forward to. There are few things
better than a great ride, late night beer and fries at the Local.
It will be soo cool to hang with you all again.  When: Wednesday Oct 30th - Depature time 8:00 PM sharp  Where: Parking lot of the park Tavern at Monroe and 10th  Why: It is better to regret a ride than to forget a ride.

GAP Finals I put my GAP Finals report up.

11-1-2002 Ride Time Change The Coffee and Bagel ride and the Beyond Six Flags ride have moved to 10 am. Check the Winter Rides page for all of the latest information.

Asheville Track Did you know that Asheville, NC has its own bicycle racing track? It isn't quite a velodrome, but they hold fixed gear races. It is an old stock car track  (Asheville Motor Speedway) that has been taken over as a city park. All races are run under track racing rules. The ABRC has also announced that there will be winter training under the lights on the track.

11-4-2002 More Winter Rides Announced  There are group rides every Tuesday and Thursday  at 4:30 . Tuesday meets in the parking lot of the church at the intersection of Mt. Paran Rd. and Northside Parkway. Thursday's ride meets at Sutton Middle School across the street from the horse park at Chastain Park on Powers Ferry Road. Both rides last about 1.25 hours, so bring a light. Based on who provided the information, these will be race training rides. There are no maps, and you will be dropped if you cannot keep up.

Cyclocross in Alabama Cyclocross comes to Birmingham, AL this weekend as the Georgia Series visits the neighboring state. Hosted by GC Cycling, Oak Mountain is always a fun stop on the Georgia Cyclocross Series. See the website for all of the info. From what I've heard riders have a great "singletrack" course to look forward to. I predict that mountain bikers will do well at his race.

Cyclocross Report Mother natures greeted cross racers with temperatures on the mid-40's and sunny skies for the first race of the GA Cyclocross Series. Team "Camp Creek" placed well at the first Georgia Cyclocross race. Tony Scott (Genesis-Fulton Flyers) dominated the Masters 30+ race. Pro mountain biker Andy Johnson (EPX) won the Men's A race. Lamar Mauney (Genesis) placed 3rd in the Masters 40 plus. Daryl McKenzie (Team CAT), last year's Cat. B series winner, put in a good effort in the A's race. The full results should be up soon on the Georgia Cyclocross web page. Thanks to Jim Burt for the use of the great photos!

More 24 HOA Jim also gave me some pictures of the 24 Hours of Adrenalin a few weeks ago at the Georgia International Horse Park.

Team Transfer News Cyclingnews.com reports that Jeff Hopkins, the Australian who ride for Jittery Joes in 2002, will move to Ofoto--Lombardi Sports in 2003. 11-6-2002 12 Hours Hill of Truth The results for the 12 Hour Hill of Truth race in Knoxville are up. Congratulations to Team Peggy on taking 2nd and 4th in the Women's division. Peggy Team #1 had first wrapped up until a series of flat tires and mechanicals cost them nearly half a lap.

Cross CommentsOn bike.com, Gorden Daniel says of cyclocross: "What did I learn? ‘Cross is hard, even if it’s a low key race in Kentucky! I  can only imagine how many brain cells I might burn out if I tried my hand in  New England or NorCal. It requires the power of a lion but with the ability to  run like a scared gazelle, jump like a grasshopper, float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. I ran like a sloth, had the power of a butterfly, floated  like a rock and got swatted like a bee. I had a ton of fun though, I think I
learned something and come rain, snow or extended run-up, I’ll be back, track mitts and all."

No one could have put it better. No matter how much you suffer, cross is just fun!

Sad News It is with great sadness that I pass on the news of the death of one of our community. David Martin was killed Monday night when a car lost control and struck him. The accident investigation has not been completed by the police. David is survived by his wife, Gretchen. David was a Cat. 1 racer and had recently joined the Genesis-Fulton Flyers team. He worked at the Atlanta Cycling Vinings store and was regarded as a top mechanic.

Yellow River The Gwinnett County Parks and Rec. Department is asking for mountain bikers cooperation in staying off of the equestrian trails. Mountain Bikers are to stay OFF trails marked with orange. They anticipate all trails being marked within the next several weeks. They have received several complaints about rude mountain bikers. Let's help keeps these convenient trails open! Remember to be kind to your fellow trail users! SORBA works hard to keep the trails open for the enjoyment of all.

11-7-2002 Hincapie Sports The Daily Peloton reports that George and Rich Hincapie of Greenville, SC have started their own Cycling Clothing business. They plan to offer custom clothing and will sell via the Hincapie Sports website.

Burnt Mountain Ride There will be an organized ride in Jasper on November 16th. I think it is the "Burnt Mountain Century." Details are on active.com

Moving on Up! That's right! I'm finally a Cat. 3 on the road. I figure if I'm going to race with them and get beat by them, I might as well do it as a 3! It will only make you faster and stronger to move up.....

11-10-2002 Dave Martin is remembered

Roswell News According to NorthFulton.com, the Roswell Riverwalk, an 8 foot wide paved trail for bikers and walkers, will be finished by the summer of 2003. It will extend from Wileo Road and  along Azalea Dr. to Don White Park. Plans call for the path to eventually connect to Alpharetta's Greenway although no construction dates have been set for the rest of the paved trail. Long term goals are to have a multi-use path from the Silver Comet trail through Cobb County extending into Cumming.

PATH Foundation News The Silver Comet construction has resumed in Esom Hill, GA, about 1000 feet from the Alabama state line. The 8.25 mile segment of the Comet from Kimoto Tech and the state line should be completed before the end of the year. Visit the Path website for more Silver Comet info. including some trail closures this winter.

Cyclocross News As I sit here at work on Sunday twiddling my thumbs, the Birmingham cross race has completed. Sorry I missed another (I'm sure) rousing race with "Team Camp Creek." I'll be in Norcross next week! The race fliers through the Thomson race have been posted

11-15-2002 Middle GA MTB Festival Cal Till, president of SORBA OMBA, has said that the Middle Georgia Mountain Bike Festival has been cancelled because of the weather. It will be rescheduled for Feb. 2003.

11-12-2002 Yellow River News The Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Department has begun to implement the
master plan for the Yellow River trails. Plans call for the current mountain bike and equestrian trails to remain and for a 1 mile paved trail to be built for families and those with disabilities. Hiking trails will be located on the east side of the river. You can see the Master Plan here

Silver Comet The Silver Comet connector is to be built in Cobb County from the Mavell Rd. trailhead to the Public Shopping center at the corner of S. Cobb Dr. and the East-West Connector. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of the year as soon as the GA DOT gives its approval. Plans also call for a 10 foot wide sidewalk from the Silver Comet to the Cobb Galleria area and eventually stretching to the Chattahoochee National Recreation areas. Construction is set to begin next spring.

Cyclocross News Lamar Mauney (Genesis) reports in from the cyclocross race in Alabama this weekend. Tony Scott (Genesis) won the Masters 30+ race for the second weekend in a row. Tim Barrett took the Cat. C race, and Lisa Ropke (Independent Fabrications) won the women's race.

Team News Ah, it is still silly season with talk of teams merging, others going into oblivion, and more rider transfers. I guess we will find out who is really riding for who at the first Greenville race in 2003.

Links Updates I updated all of the links pages, took out some broken links, and added several new ones, including on the Georgia page.

Norcross Cross Andy Johnston handily won the Men's A race Nov. 17th at the Cyclocross race at Best Friend Park in Norcross. In the Master's 30+, Tony Scott (Genesis) battled Chris Wiley (Peachtree Bikes) for the title. In what was the most exciting race of the day, the two stayed together most of the race until the last run up when Tony put a slight Gap on Chris and crossed the line for the win. It's great to see Chris back in action! (For those that don't know, Chris owns Oz Pizza in Decatur and East Point, some of the best pizza in the city!) Tim Barrett (Nalley Automotive) continued his winning streak in the Cat. C race. Lisa Ropke (IF) dominated the competition in the Women's race with Trish Albert (Nalley Automotive) coming in 2nd. Lemar Mauney had a Top 4 placing in the Master's 40+ race.

Personal News The rumors are true! I've found a house! It's a great little brick ranch house outside the Perimeter near some great riding. I'll be moving at the end of November. There will be a party sometime in Jan-Feb. after I get settled in.

The OTHER Season Yeah, Baby! It's back and better than ever! The WINTER BIKE LEAGUE! The first ride will be Dec. 7.  There are two new jerseys this year in addition to the Sprinter's and Leader's Jerseys-Top Female and Top Espoir. There is a $10,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs this year. The smack talk has already started!

11-21-2002 Trainer Rides Interested in doing trainer workouts this winter? There is a spin session on Thursdays in Marietta. Email me for details.  This class is free. Coach Jay is starting his trainer classes after Thanksgiving. Many bike shops are also having trainer classes, so call your favorite LBS to check on it! Bicycles Unlimited is having trainer classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Peachtree City.

More Sad News It is with sadness that I tell you about another Atlanta rider that was hit by a car this week. The Junior is an up and coming Cat. 4 racer. A driver turned left in front of him as he was coming down a hill inside the Perimeter. There were several witnesses. He is in the hospital with a broken leg, broken arm, and concussions. He will eventually be ok. Thank heavens he was not killed. Be careful out there guys and gals!

Update #2 for 11-21-2002: Junior Update Update on the Junior rider: He is expected to undergo surgery for his leg in the next few days. Doctors say that he may be back on his trainer a few weeks after the surgery and are optimistic for a FULL recovery! The Junior's reaction to hearing his bike was totaled was: "Oh man - I'd wanted to turn it into a time trial bike!" We are cheering for ya little buddy!

11-22-2002 CX Results The Cross Results from the Alabama race are up at the GC Cycling webpage.

11-25-2002 Macon Cyclocross The fourth round in the Georgia State Cyclocross series was held on Saturday, November 23 at the LH Thomson factory in Macon, GA. A flat, fast course treated riders to some great racing. The Master's races were competitive although small. The remote location kept some racers away. Tony Scott again took top honors in the 30+ race with series leader Lamar Mauney having an excellent race in the 40+ division. Andy Johnston maintained his dominance over the Men's A category. Lisa Ropke topped a strong women's field that was 9 riders deep. Trish Albert placed 3rd after a mystery woman passed (?) her. If any of the results above are incorrect, please email me. I did not get to see all of the results sheets at the race.

"Closed for Thanksgiving" Southeastern Cycling will not be updated this week after Thursday. I will be "closing" it for a weekend filled with moving to my new house, eating too much turkey, and racing cyclocross to work off the turkey. I also won't have a home phone line to use my PC until early next week (thank heavens for a T3 at work!). If anyone wants to help me move, clean, or anything, you know how to contact me! I'm offering free beer and pizza.

The WBL The OTHER Season start officially on Dec. 7th, and there is an unofficial ride this Saturday in Athens. Check out the WBL message board for all of the latest smack talk!

Sunday Ride The Sunday ride will be having several rides this week. These are training rides and not for the casual or recreational rider. Pace is 20 mph++, and you can expect to get dropped if you can't keep up.

Junior Update The Junior that was hit last week is doing well. Doctors plan to perform surgery to repair his broken leg and arm soon.

The Georgia Cyclocross Series began November 2nd in Marietta. All the details are up at the Series Web page. It looks like it is going to be a fantastic year for CX!

Georgia Cyclocross Series Schedule
Nov. 2    Marietta – Southern Poly Tech
Nov. 10    Birmingham, Alabama
Nov. 17    Norcross – Friendship Park
Nov. 23    Macon, GA – Thomson Factory
Nov. 30    Dallas – Paulding Meadows
Dec. 1    Dallas – Paulding Meadows
Dec. 7    Athens (State Championship) – Sandy Creek Park

For more information about Cyclocross check out Cyclocross World. If you have never raced CX (Cross), it is so much fun! It hurts and is one of the most painful experiences you will ever have racing, but it is a real adrenaline rush. Cross is also spectator friendly. Often, you can see almost all of the course from one spot.

11-27-2002 Links Updates I updated the Georgia links page with some new links to trail maps and the NC page with various links.

12-2-2002 Paulding County Cross The Bike Shop in Hiram sponsored 2 days of cyclocross at Paulding Meadows Park. The course was a traditional cross course with several smooth power sections, 4 run ups, and lots of cold (freezing cold!) weather. The Bicycles Unlimited team won the Cat. C men's race both days. Cleve Blackwell won Sat., and Brady Rogers won Sunday. Lisa Ropke finished an impressive 4th in the Cat. C race on Saturday, and she dominated the women's fields both days. Andy Johnston won the Men's A race Saturday. Lamar Mauney is still in the hunt for the Master's 40+ title after finishing 4th on Sunday.

John update John, the Junior that was hit by the car, is home from the hospital! The surgery to his broken leg and arm went great. Get well soon John!

12-4-2002 David Martin Memorial Ride

A RIDE FOR DAVID
A memorial ride to honor David Martin & to promote safer streets in Atlanta

Where: Mt Paran Church of God parking lot (Mt Paran Rd at Northside Pkwy. From I-75 take the Mt Paran exit and travel west one block. Address: 2055 Mt Paran Rd NW
Cost: $25 per rider (ride day registration only, includes T-shirt)
(cash and checks payable to the David Martin Assistance Fund)
· Registration opens at 9:00 a.m.
· All proceeds will be donated to David’s widow and stepson

Special Guest: George Hincapie of the US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team

Note: There will be media coverage at this event. Join us in your support. Helmets are mandatory. There will be no sag or planned stops, but a sweep crew will follow the ride. The ride will be well marked and easy to follow. All riders will be provided with a map. In the event you are unable to follow with the pace of the ride we ask that you observe all traffic signs and common “rules to the road.” This is a ride to promote safety awareness on metro Atlanta’s streets, which benefit all cyclists – please be there to show your support!

--Please come out and support this event. We have had two members of our cycling community killed by cars this year. From everything I've heard, there will be several media companies there to cover the event. We need to bring attention to our right to use the road!

IMBA Report Card Georgia received a B on IMBA's 2002 Annual Trail Access Report card. Georgia's grade was based on SORBA's outstanding efforts building trails and the lack of access to trails in metro Atlanta. Colorado took top honors with an abundance of singletrack, well mapped trails, and active advocacy groups.

Caribbean and Central American Games Congratulations to Iona Wynter (Genesis) on her win in the road race and a 6th place in the time trial at the Caribbean and Central American games recently held in San Salvador, El Salvador. Athens Twilight The Athens Twilight Criterium held every April will not be part of the Tour De Georgia in 2003. Organizers expressed disappointment. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, the fifth stage of the race was too long, and the UCI requested that the stage ending be changed from Athens to Gainesville. Atlanta cyclists have speculated that the fifth stage might include some of the "Six Gap" climbs. Athens and other area cyclists are up in arms at the decision of the Tour De Georgia promoters. With baited breath, they wait to hear what the future of the beloved Twilight will be.

Dave Martin Memorial Ride Don't forget about the Dave Martin Memorial Ride this Saturday, Dec. 14th beginning at 11 am. See above for the details. Cyclingnews.com gave some coverage to this important Atlanta event.

David Martin Memorial Ride

On Saturday, December 14, 2002 over 600 cyclists braved sub- 35 degree temperatures to give their support at the David Martin Memorial Ride. David Martin was a Cat. 1 rider on the Genesis team that was killed by a drunk driver on November 4 near Emerson, GA while he was on a training ride. The Ride for David was a benefit for his widow and stepson. David is deeply missed by the Atlanta cycling community. Maureen Blyer, who was killed on West Paces Ferry Rd. in September, was also remembered. John Floyd, a 15 year old racer, who was hit by a car on Northside Drive made an appearance. He was an instant celebrity! George Hincapie (US Postal Service) gave him an autographed jersey, and John signed autographs for the riders.

Police escorted riders around the 18 mile loop though Buckhead and Vinings. Some motorists honked in support, but one incident was disturbing. As a volunteer was stopping traffic at a light, a Volvo tried to go around the volunteer and nearly plowed into some riders. What makes people so impatient that they cannot wait 30 seconds to get to their destination? This is what we are trying to change.

Those that did not get tshirts can call Atlanta Cycling's Vining's Store. Your name should be on their list.

Some pictures can be seen in the full report. I'll have more pictures in a few days.

More about David at Spokepost.com

Are Atlanta Roads Safe? Long time Atlanta Cyclist Mary McEneaney has an article about Atlanta roads on Bike.com.

Cyclocross Nationals The Cyclocross National Championships were held this past weekend in Napa, CA. NC Rider Ryan Trebon (Krystal) rode to a 3rd place finish in the U23 Men's race. Esther Davis (Outback Bikes) from Atlanta took 10th in the Master Women 30-34 race. Gerard Remery of Stone Mountain took 23rd in the Master Men 45-49. Andy Johnston, winner of the Men's A division in the GA State Cross series, finished 25th in the Master Men 35-39. Of course, cyclingnews.com has all of the coverage.

GA DOT Looking for Input From the North Fulton BUG group: The GDOT is currently soliciting public input on this project. They have a Citizen's Advisory Committee that meets once every 2-3 months, to gather the public's input. Bike lanes MUST be included on this project, since it is the vital east-west link between Cobb County and the Perimeter Mall area. It also links Cobb County to the Sandy
Springs and North Springs MARTA stations. We desperately need someone
who could attend these meetings to be on the committee. If you think you might be interested, please contact me at 770-396-2006 for more information.

12-18-2002 More Pictures from David's Ride I put up a few more pictures from the Ride for David on Dec. 14.

David's Ride: From the Organizers

Please forward:
On behalf of Tim, Manny, Don, Clay, Tony, Kirk and myself I would like to thank
each and every one of you for attending Saturday's event. We are still working on the final numbers, but it looks like we had over 600 riders and we have raised over $17,000 for David's family. This was well above our expectations!

It was a real breathing sight to see over a mile of cyclists peddling down the streets of Atlanta. In discussions with David's family they were really moved by the show of support.

I would also like to personally thank George and Rich Hincapie for traveling from Greenville, SC to ride with us. They have been dear friends of mine for many years and they didn't hesitate when I asked them for their help. Beyond being an incredible rider - I think George is a great Ambassador for the US Postal Service.

I hope that the awareness to motorists continues and I also hope that we (the bicycling community) continue to show good sense in how we ride on the streets. Responsibility for our safety starts with us!

Thanks again from all of us. See you on the road.

Stephen Colavito, Jr.

Segways Banned in SF! The San Francisco City Council has banned Segways on the bike paths and sidewalks of San Francisco. Matt Smith, a columnist with San Francisco Weekly, called Segways "the ultimate American doomsday machine," potentially responsible for a "tsunami of lard." Maybe there is still hope in Georgia! There is currently no law on the books for Segways.
