1-9-2003 Mountain Bike Poetry..And now, for a lighter moment:

"My Blue Riding Shoe" by Rocketboy. Reposted with permission.

"My blue riding shoe.... by RB"
oh blue riding shoe
how deeply I do love you
you’re old and so smelly
But I’ll wear you to the deli
on my big feet so lumpy
you’re soft warm and comfy
you make me look silly when I walk
‘specially on hard floors and frozen rock
you keep me clipped in
you help me to spin
you’re old faded leather
from all sorts of weather
you’re crusty and molded
and your tongue is all folded
But you’re my cross country buddy
who likes to get muddy
You know you’ve got real soul
and always ready to roll
so please shoe, don’t die
stick with me and fly
don’t rip or get torn
just be loved when you’re worn
and keep my feet happy
even when my ride is crappy
cause I’m slow, yes you know
but I still have to go
cause I love when I ride
and I love when we stride
I have been mean to you I think...
kicked you off, scuffed you, made you stink
but you know I love you, ya’ smelly ol’ shoe
wish we could hang out more; share a brew
remember the time I stepped in dog doo?
I knew that it had to suck for you.
So I dug it out with a stick
remember how quick?
Did you notice my shiver
while I swished you in that river?
Had to get you clean bud
‘cause we both knew it wasn’t mud
Enough about me though
this poem is your show
You always make me happy, and never sad
You’re the best shoe that I’ve ever had.
Have you hugged your shoes today?

It amazes me that the problems we still struggle with were the same 10 years ago, before my time on the bike--advocacy, angry motorists, trees jumping out at you on the mountain bike, etc. I hope you enjoy the articles; the first is entitled "Call Me Wimp." Mary is still riding and completed a trip to France last year with the Atlanta Cycling crew to watch the Tour; she's looking forward to going back and climbing the Alps again this year.

Cyclists need to educate motorists to our right to the road, not alienate them.

The trail remains closed at the Mavel Rd. trailhead to approximately mile 1.4 for replacement of the Cooper Lake Rd. bridge. Expected completion date is Feb. 24.

2-19-2003 Skip Murphy For those that knew Skip Murphy, today is a sad day. Skip passed away on Tuesday while mountain biking in Florida. Cartecay Bikes will post the memorial service information when it is available. Skip was very active in the EMBA club.

Gwinnett Problems! I received this via email last night.

As you see below, Gwinnett County DOT has not followed through on their commitment to us. Specifically, GwinDOT department head Brian Allen promised that all roads in Gwinnett would maintain a 3-5 foot shoulder in future construction, repaving, and reengineering. The Winter's Chapel road construction, as well as the under-construction Bunten Rd sidewalk project actually REDUCE the bikeable shoulder when the curb and gutter are installed. At times, the white line is painted on the asphalt/concrete seam. Everyone will tell you that a gutter pan is dangerously unridable.

Please drop Gwinnett DOT a friendly reminder. See the links below. I'd suggest both Brian Allen and Alan Chapman get a copy and "CC" Vince Edwards, our county bike-ped coordinator.

Things to consider:

1) A LARGE number of Gwinnett roads are slated for sidewalk/curb and gutter over the next 5 years. If these projects are an indication, Gwinnett roads are going to become even LESS ridable. We should expect and get the promised shoulder width! We shouldn't have our ridable roads become unusable. Yes, right of way will have to be widened occasionally and that may cost a bit more, but 3 extra feet overall won't make THAT much difference. Plans should at least keep status quo when circumstances prohibit widening the shoulder to 3 feet (5 feet on major arteries.)

2) If the shoulder is eliminated when curb and gutter are installed, the lane width should be narrowed! Request a 1 foot reduction in lane width when the shoulder is only the width of the gutter pan. This will make the road safer for cars, cyclists, and pedestrians as there will be more space between the lanes and the sidewalk. Moreover, the narrower lanes will SLOW the traffic.

3) The corridors effected, Winters Chapel and Bunten Rd, are both already in use by cyclists. GwinDOT is effectively shutting out the cycling community and making these roads LESS usable. As a taxpayer, you should demand better.

Call Gwinnett DOT and ask to speak with Mr. Allen, or drop him a note at the address below. Be sure Mr. Chapman and Mr. Edwards are included.

Cyclist Killed in Dekalb I have a little more information on the cyclist killed in Dekalb County last weekend. He was apparently using the bike as his mode of transportation. According to a Dekalb County email, he was riding in the middle of the roadway. There were no reflective markings or lights on the bike. The street did not have lights near where he was killed.

2-24-2003  Middle Georgia MTB Festival OMBA has set the date for the Middle Georgia for March 8-9 at the Dauset Trails. Activities include group rides, fishing, and a BBQ dinner Saturday night.

Week of 2-24-2003:

David Friedkin From David Comer, and Karen & Marv Masson. Our hearts go out to all of Dave's friends and family. He will be missed!

Sorry to bring more sad news to my first message board post. I've met and rode with many of you lot and know you appreciate all others passionate about bikes. If you didn't know Dave I guarantee you've been with him on group rides or on trails around Georgia. (Blue K2 jersey and Serotta shorts was his usual kit). Great guy with a zest for life, his wife, his dogs, biking and so much more. Below an email & details from Marvin and Karen Masson who were with him on Sunday. I'll post details on the ride when known.

Hi Everybody, I guess you’ve heard the news about Dave. But in case you haven’t, he died yesterday while riding his bike. The funeral services are on Wednesday. Details are below. In addition, Leslie (Dave’s wife) would like us to have a ride for Dave Saturday morning. I’ll forward the details when I get them.

We thought you may have a lot of questions regarding the circumstances.

We (Dave, Karen & I) were 50 miles through an 80 mile loop up in the mountains. Dave was feeling and riding great. We had stopped to refuel at Turners Corner and afterwards he said he didn’t feel well, but we all assumed it was indigestion. So we kept riding, but after about 10 miles, he was dropping back a bit and so he gave us the keys and sent us ahead to get the car. He was going to keep riding at a slower pace. We got back to the car and retraced the route to where we left him, but he wasn’t there. So we went back over the route, thinking we must have missed him or that he made a wrong turn, and still no Dave. At that point we thought we’d better check the hospital in Dahlonega in case he crashed or had got hit by a car. Unfortunately Dave was there. It turns out a motorist found Dave on the side of the road - he was not breathing. They called an ambulance and gave CPR until the ambulance arrived. Dave was taken to the Dahlonega Hospital but he could not be saved. The doctor’s theory is that he had had a massive heart attack.

Dave loved riding his bike. I don’t know what else to say – we’re still in shock and disbelief. We will miss him…….

Marvin & Karen

Leslie asked that I pass along the information regarding funeral services for Dave. She thanks everyone for their calls and thoughts. The service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday Callonwolde Fine Arts Center (980 Briarcliff Road NE Atlanta, Georgia 30306.) If there are updates regarding the time, we will send out another email.

Also, Leslie would like for anyone who can to join for a ride in Dave's memory this Saturday, March 1st at 11 a.m. We will be sending out details shortly.

Those who wish to can make donations in Dave's name to:  Second Chance Animal Rescue, c/o Harriet Patterson, 3254 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30329

David Friedkin Memorial Ride From an email I received:

Per our earlier email, we are getting together for a ride in Dave's memory on Saturday. The ride will start at 11 a.m. from St. Phillips Church on Peachtree Street (across from Fellinis/Rumson Rd). For those of you that can, please try to ride your bike to the church rather than driving so we don't take up excessive parking spaces, or please park on the streets around and behind the church. The ride will last approx 1 - 1 1/2 hours.

Schedule Set for South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series
Host Cities, Dates Finalized

Greenville, S.C. – Hincapie Sports, in conjunction with the South
Carolina Heritage Corridor and the South Carolina Department of Parks,
Recreation and Tourism, has finalized the schedule for the inaugural
South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series, to be staged April 29-May 2,
2003.

The host cities and dates are:
April 29 Anderson
April 30 Walterboro
May 1 Greenwood
May 2 Aiken

The series comprises four men’s professional 1/2 criteriums. Each race will offer a $10,000 prize purse and points toward National Race Calendar standings. “Between Athens Twilight (April 26), the Heritage Series and the Shelby and Roswell races the next weekend, there will be nearly $80,000 in professional prize money up for grabs,” says race director Rich Hincapie, president of Hincapie Sports. “In terms of money, this is going to be the biggest criterium week in America.”

The Heritage series comes on the heels of the Tour de Georgia, which major American UCI teams, including U.S. Postal Service, are expected to attend. Courses will be kermesse-style circuits through the cities’ downtown areas. Races will range from 100K to 50 miles, and registration is open to UCI teams and select Elite teams.

The races are designed to showcase South Carolina’s historic Heritage Corridor which extends from the mountains in the northwest to the Atlantic Ocean. For more than a decade, the area has been recognized as a world-class training ground for professional road cyclists and mountain biking teams. Currently, U.S. Postal’s George Hincapie resides and trains in Greenville.

Florida Cycling Grand Prix At the NRC opener--the Florida Cycling Grand Prix--in Gainesville, Florida Genesis Rider Leigh Valletti (Roswell) took third place in the overall. Florida resident and mountain bike pro Rachel Massey (Ford-No Boundries)
took 9th. On the Men's side, Kevin Monahan (7-Up) won the overall as well as opening crit on Saturday. Apparently, the second of the three races was cancelled because of bad weather. Congratulations Leigh!

Greenville Series The Road Bike Review Forum has a photo of Kent Bostic and some old school campy brakes at the Greenville race at Donaldson Center on Sunday. I have not seen any results for the races but will post a link when I do. I was at Donaldson on Sunday to support the Dish Network team. Wind was gusting to about 30 mph. Once breaks got away, they usually stayed away. The Master's race was quite exciting with a break of six going off the front on the first lap and staying away until the finish. A Cane Creek rider came across the line first.

2-26-2003  Florida Cycling Grand Prix More results from Florida's NRC opener this past weekend's overall. Pro/1/2 Men:  17: John Murphy, 18: Tim Henry, 22: Curtis Baker (Trek VW), 25: Josh "Super 24 Hour Mountain Biker Man Seldman (CTS), 32: Troy Adams, Women 1/2/3: 3: Leigh Valletti (Genesis), 9: Rachel Massey (Ford-No Boundries), Women 4: 6: Rachel Coy (Genesis),

2-27-2003 Sobe Cannondale Georgia Riders Sobe Cannondale has announced its team for 2003. Chris "Oz" Wiley from Atlanta is known to many as one of the fastest Pros around. Chris has ridden in the past for Peachtree Bikes and Gary Fisher.  Pro Mountain biker Lisa Ropke from Woodstock joins Sobe Cannondale for 2003. Lisa is the reigning Georgia State Cyclocross Champion. Thomas Turner returns to the team again. Thomas was one of  the country's top Juniors before a very successful first year in the Senior  ranks in 2002. Karen Masson also returns. Greenville Results Hincapie Sports has the Greenville Results up. Congratulations to all of the winners!

The Dish Network team talks strategy before the Cat. 5 Race in Greenville last weekend.

3-4-2003 Urban Double Down The 2003 DOUBLE DOWN "Urban Sprawl" Freeride Contest will be formatted as
follows: Asheville, NC, Saturday, June 7th. 3-8pm, PLEASE REGISTER EARLY. The website will be up soon.

The contest will be in two parts:

A TRUE STREET course will be erected, containing several 1/4's, a spine, wallrides, sub-boxes, a grind box, and numerous kickers, as well as a crackhead's blown-out minvan, and other streetish obstacles. This course will span an area of 30-40' wide by 100-120' in length. Part One: Street will be judged. Riders will get 1:30, plus 30 seconds for a "big trick." There will be Hacker, Amateur, and Pro classes, as well as a 20" 'expo' class. Think X-Games format. Depending on the number of riders who show up, 16-32 riders will then be seeded, dual-style, based on their street course savvy to ride head-to-head in - Part Two: Speed Trials. The speed trials course will be more or less a "structural dual slalom," with two side-by-side courses identical in feature and difficulty. Highest seeded rider gets lane choice.

There will be a drag-race flat start to stepup to balance check, then more fun stuff, including elevated ladders, a 90deg skinny turn, a wallride turn, teeter-totters, wooden rhythm, then the FIRST stairset from last year (sorry guys, no more 20-stair gap, BUT-), then both courses will come together briefly, lending a "WC dual" feel to the event. The finish will be an 8' drop to grass tranny, with a shorter 5' option. We figure you'll be dropping 10-12' before you hit. This event will be timed, but the judges will be on hand to award style points, which will come off raw time at the conclusion of each run. This will be single-elimination, miss-and-out style racing,
but times will be used in final placing determination.

If you get beat, but then bust a big superman off the drop, you can conceiveably come out ahead. If you stick a 90deg bunnyhop around a skinny corner, you'll be awarded a time bonus. If you manual thru the pallet rhythm, you get a time bonus - you see where I'm going here...style will be rewarded!

This year's event will NOT be NORBA sanctioned, and will be more technical  than burly, so we want all levels of rider to come out and test their mettle against other riders. It'll all be about having more fun than the next guy. The course will be more suitable to 5" travel and down, hardtail-friendly, with an emphasis on Urban style. EVERYBODY will get some practice runs, and EVERYBODY will get to ride in the Street section of the contest. NOTE: There seem to be NO RULES for "Speed Trials," so come with an open
mind - I guarantee you a good freakin' time! The purse will be EXTENSIVE: we have cash sponsorship from several BIG
NAMES, so you may end up with a little party money for the Snowshoe NCS if you make the trip - $500/$400/$300/$200/$100 for Pro Class!

New Duluth Ride The new Cycleworks team is hosting a new group ride every Saturday at 9 am from the Dutluth location of Cycleworks. The route is about 30 miles through Gwinnett County's rolling terrain. A few good hills are thrown in for good measure. Most weeks, they loop will be done twice. To get to the ride: take Peachtree Industrial Blvd. north from I-285. Pass Berkely Lake. The store will be on the right hand side. If you cross Pleasant Hill, you've gone too far. I did the ride last weekend. Prepare for a very fast pace to keep up with the Cycleworks race team! The route generally has low traffic although there are a few bad crossings of Buford Hwy and Ptree Industrial Blvd. Overall, it's a nice ride.

Track Clean Up Day March 8-9 will be a clean up day at the Dick Lane Velodrome from 10 am-4 pm each day. Coffee and donuts will be provided. Come out even if you can only help for an hour or two! Email DLV if you can help out.

Winter Track Training & Beginner Classes Winter track training is on Wednesdays from 7-9 pm for experienced track racers only. Beginner classes start April April 3. Wednesday night training races start April 2.

3-5-2003 Officials Clinic in Greenville Saturday Email Chips Chapman for details. A USCF Officials Clinic has been scheduled for March 8, 2003 to better accomodate interested cyclists in South Carolina, western North Carolina, & eastern Georgia. With the assistance of Chuck Hodge, the clinic will be held in Greenville, SC from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the City Hall. Please RSVP and let me know if you are interested in attending the clinic. We will send you directions & details on where to meet.

The Clinic will offer training for anyone wanting to become a new (category 4) official. It will also be an update and refresher for all
current USCF officials, and will offer an upgrade opportunity for category 4 to category 3 officials. At the end of the clinic, exams for category 3 & 4 officials will be given. Upon passing the exam, you will qualify for an official's license. The USCF Official license fee is $35, or $25 if you have a NORBA official's license.

There will also be a motorcycle officials practical on Sunday March 9 at the Greenville Spring Series Donaldson Center race. Chuck Hodge will coordinate the training. There is no additional charge for this training. Supper will be ordered from a local pizza restaurant. There is a $10 fee to defer the cost of food and course materials. There is no other charge for the clinic except for the license fee if you become an official or renew your license. Bring your latest USCF Rulebook, paper, and writing instrument. (You would
bring at least these items if you were officiating a race.) There will be some handouts and study materials. If you would like a category 4 or 3 official's study guide before the clinic, reply ASAP with your address so I can try to arrange for the materials to be sent to you.
If you know anyone who is interested in becoming an official, please send me their names and how to contact them, and forward this info to them. Let me know if you have any specific requests or needs.

$70,000 Prize Money Cyclingnews.com reports that over $70,000 in prize money will be available at the crits in Georgia, NC, and SC during Shelby, SC Heritage, and Roswell. $20,000 alone will be available at Roswell. The "new" series is being called "Crits, Grits, and a Heap of Greens."

7-Up/Maxxis The Cannondale-7-Up UCI III team is sponsored in part this year by Maxxis, the tire manufacturer based in Georgia. John Lieswyn, the team leader, says in his most recently Cyclingnews.com diary. "Big news for us is the co-sponsorship of the team by Maxxis tires. They are based in Georgia so we'll be looking for big results at April's Tour of Georgia. They have a complete line of high performance bike tires, and we've selected the second from lightest slick tire for our race wheels and a treaded mid level tire (which is probably nicer than most other company's race tires) for our training wheels. We'll be known as Team 7UP/Maxxis this season." It looks like the smack talk for the Tour De Georgia is already on!

3-7-2003 Dauset Festival Cancelled The Dauset MTB Festival for this weekend has been cancelled according to Cal Till or SORBA-OMBA. The heavy rains this week have made the trail unridable.

Officials Clinic in Atlanta I have heard that there will be a USCF officials clinic later in March or in early April in Atlanta is you cannot attend the clinic in Greenville this weekend.

Silver Comet Forums The Trailexpress.com forums have been taken over by Team Maniac. The  are easy to use. Talk with your fellow Silver Comet trail users!

New Bike! I will deviate a little bit from the latest bike news to put in a little personal news. My new custom Kelly hardtail arrived last week at Boneshaker Bicycles. Even though it's only about 90% together, I managed a short ride on it on the Silver Comet yesterday to play with the set up. Riding a bike with no brakes is rather interesting while you are dodging kids, dogs, and Fred. Sweet! I CANNOT wait to get this baby on the trail in the next few weeks. The bike is a beautiful royal blue, which looks awesome with my citron Mavic rims. Also, yeah, I know! I haven't been to many races yet this year. I'm a slacker. Not really. As some of ya'll know, I spent most of February being sick, working 60 hours a week, and battling migraines (damn things!). I'm happy to say that I'm back on track. My wonderful teammates on Boneshakers drug me through the Gaps on Saturday and then tortured me on the Airport ride yesterday. Greg, who races for the Trek-VW Southeastern Regional team has been helping to whip me into shape during spinning classes a few times per week. The man is an interval animal! Anyway, I plan to start racing at Brooks and then hit some of the bigger mountain bike races coming up. The weather this weekend was phenomenal! Let's hope it stays that way! I've also got some new things to post on Southeastern Cycling this week when I get some time.

Greenville Race Report Boneshaker's racer Chris Jackson shares his race report on the Greenville Training Series.

Atlanta Officials Seminar From John Johnson: We will be having an Official's Seminar March 29th in Atlanta. This seminar
will do several things: First it will be the annual update for all officials, second we will be training and testing people who want to become
officials and third we will be conducting upgrade tests for current officials who want to upgrade. Bill Sandford's lovely wife is allowing us to use her café in Decatur to have the meeting. It will run from 9:00 till 2:00 and test will administered there after. The annual refresher should be complete by 11:00. Please send me an email telling me you are coming so I can get enough course materials. Thanks, John Johnson
GA/AL USA Cycling Local Coordinator. The seminar will be held at: Our Way Café, 2837 E. College Ave, Decatur, GA

Jittery Joe's Starts Off the Year Jittery Joe's Pro Jeff Hopkins notched the team's first win at the NRC Event The Festival of Speed. He took the win at the Southport Park Circuit Race over Ivan Franco. On the Women's side, Tina Mayolo-Pic (Team Diet Rite) won both of the women's events.

3-12-2003 24 Hours of Booty The first 24 Hours of Booty will take place in Charlotte, NC on June 13th starting at 8 pm. It is a fundraiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Team in Training. For 24 hours, riders will ride around a 3 mile loop that will be closed to traffic. The "Booty Loop" is in Myers Park.

MADHRA News The Mid Atlantic Downhill Racing Association has sent out an announcement of some additions to their series. There will be a hardtail class with its own year end awards. Each member will receive a tshirt and discounts at participating shops. MADHRA is an organization based in Asheville, NC that is in its second year promoting a downhill and dual slalom series in the Southeast and Mid Atlantic Regions.

Greenville Training Series This is the last weekend for the Greenville Training Series. Let's hope there are not as many wrecks as there were last weekend! There are tons of photos of the first Greenville race weekend on Cyclingnews.com. If anyone knows the photographer, have him email me. Congratulations to Leigh Valletti (Genesis) on her win Sunday at Gvle. Way to ride Leigh! Brooks is up next weekend!

Track News All riders at the Dick Lane Velodrome will now be required to sign a waiver each time they ride or practice at the track. The waiver can be found in PDF format on the DLV site. 24 people helped to clean up the track on March 8-9. They report that much of their "honey-do" list was accomplished. Thanks to all those that helped! Don't for get that race season at the track starts April 2.

Greenville Report Returning Southeastern Cycling columnist Bryan Holloway returns with his first report of the year on the Donaldson Road Race Feb. 22 in Greenville, SC.

Andre Kivilev Dies Cofidis rider Andre Kivilev died this morning of complications from a head injury that he received in Monday's stage of the Paris-Nice race. He and two other riders went down. Kivilev's face took the brunt of the fall, and he was not wearing a helmet. He sustained extensive injuries and had been in a drug induced coma since Monday. He is survived by a wife and young son. Today's stage of Paris-Nice will be neutralized and ridden in Kivilev's honor. Velonews and Cyclingnews have full coverage of the tragic events.

James Klotz, who races for Cycleworks, sent out the following email regarding the tragedy. I'm posting it here with his permission. Remember to wear your helmets!

"Hey Guys, Hope everybody is well. I am not usually one to preach, so I hope you will forgive me for this email. I read about Andrei Kivilev this morning (Cofidis). You know he was killed in Paris-Nice yesterday because he did not have a helmet on when he crashed. Some of you are aware I crashed this past Sunday in Greenville. Had I not been wearing a helmet, I would have possibly been in the same boat. My crash was just like his, with the blunt of the weight coming down on my forehead. It trashed my helmet. So please, please wear your helmets when you ride. I know most of you do, but given the last few events, I thought I'd mention it again. http://www.velonews.com/news/fea/3584.0.html

Savannah's downtown squares and parks will host the prologue, in which racers will compete individually against the clock in a time
trial. The first stage of Dodge Tour de Georgia, where the cyclists will compete against one another, will start on Wednesday in Augusta and finish in Macon. Stage
Two will see racers leave Macon on Thursday and race to Columbus. Pine Mountain (Callaway) will furnish the start for Stage Three on Friday, which finishes in Rome. The north Georgia mountains play host to the cyclists on Stage Four from Dalton to Gainesville on Saturday, which will be a stern test for the riders. The race
promises an exciting finish on Sunday, April 27, with Stage Five planned
as a circuit race around Atlanta lasting more than five hours.

"This race will not only test the skills and strength of some of the
best professional cyclists in the world, it will showcase the beauty of Georgia's landscape," said Stan Holm, executive director. "From the coast to the mountains to downtown Atlanta, Dodge Tour de Georgia will display the best the state has to offer."

Dodge Tour de Georgia is the only stage race of this length in the U.S. that is sanctioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for 2003, and one of only five races in the U.S. on the official UCI calendar.

Details of each stage are as follows:
Prologue - Savannah Time Trial
Begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 in Savannah's historic downtown squares. Individual cyclists will race against the clock on a 2.6-mile course through downtown Savannah. The prologue is scheduled to end at 2 p.m.

Stage 1 - Augusta to Macon
Begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23 on Broad Street. The 136-mile stage has three official sprint lines - in Harlem, Warrenton and Milledgeville. The stage is scheduled to end at 3 p.m. at City Center Park in Macon.

Stage 2 - Macon to Columbus
Begins at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. The 124-mile stage has two sprint lines - in Thomaston and Warm Springs. The stage is scheduled to end at 5 p.m. at the Columbus Civic Center.

Stage 3 - Callaway/Pine Mountain to Rome
Begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 25 at Callaway. The 138-mile stage has two sprint lines - in LaGrange and Cedartown. The stage is scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. on Broad Street in downtown Rome.

Stage 4 - Dalton to Gainesville
Begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 on
Hamilton Street in downtown Dalton. The 122-mile stage includes two sprint lines - in Chatsworth and Ellijay. This stage also includes two King of the Mountain sections - Fort Mountain State Park with an elevation of 2,842 feet, and Woody Gap with an elevation of 3,184 feet. The stage is scheduled to end at 3:15 p.m. on Spring Street in downtown Gainesville.

Stage 5 - Atlanta Circuit Race
Begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 27 at Centennial Olympic Park. Riders will make nine 9.8-mile laps through downtown Atlanta. The finish is expected at about 3:30 p.m. at Centennial Olympic Park.

"Ongoing celebrations and activities in the towns and cities along the race route will increase the excitement of Dodge Tour de Georgia," said Holm. "Visitors and residents alike will get more than an unique view of Georgia, they will get to know Georgia - its attractions, people and its famous Southern hospitality."

Dodge Tour de Georgia is expected to draw an estimated 1 million spectators and 50 million television viewers in the U.S., while generating a projected $30 million in economic development for Georgia over five years.

Promoter's Meeting This is from John Johnson, the USCF rep for this area.

Subject: Georgia / Alabama Bicycle Racing Association Grassroots racing in the United States continues to grow.  In an effort to help stimulate and support this growth, USA Cycling is encouraging states to form Local or State Bicycle Racing Associations.  To do so they are providing substantial incentives to the local organizations including a fairly substantial cash infusion in return for the number of licenses sold in the respective area. The money is to be used to support bicycle racing throughout the state. The state organization will be responsible for nearly all the same responsibilities that the former District Reps / Regional Coordinators were charged with. This includes managing the racing calendar within the state, reviewing permit applications and post event reports,  training and assigning officials and rider upgrades. The LA has the opportunity to establish a reasonable membership fee or rider surcharge as well. The model most of us are familiar with is TBRA (Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association).  They have established a statewide points series in which they award jerseys to the annual points leaders in a whole host of categories.  Obviously one of the benefits to the state is it encourages local racers to race locally. To facilitate establishing the GA/AL racing association, there will be a meeting on Saturday March 22nd at 7:00 in the Howard Johnson’s in Griffin GA.  We are having this meeting in the evening during the Brooks Road race since most of you will be in town for the race anyway.  We need to have at least one representative from each Club and any licensed promoters for both GA and AL.  The goal of this meeting is to agree to move forward, elect officials and to ultimately sign an agreement with USA Cycling.  We will have a representative from USA Cycling staff to answer questions and add insight to this process. If you have questions, call me at 404-927-7577 or email at jaldenj@bellsouth.net.  The directions to the hotel are on the Brooks Road Race flier.

Historic Roswell Crit Needs Volunteers Last April, Alpharetta Velo (now known as Roswell Velo) held the inaugural the first annual Historic Roswell Criterium with great sucess. The success of last years race has meant bigger prize money ($20,000!) and improved status for 2003. This years race will be part of the National Racing Calendar so all the "big-guns" from the US domestic racing scene will be coming to Roswell on Sunday, May 4th for a shot at taking home some serious cash. With the Tour of Georgia ending seven days earlier, we might even be able to entice some of the Euro teams to stick around.

My role with the race is to coordinate all volunteer activity. We need people who understand cycling to act as course marshalls, controlling the course to make sure spectators or other racers don't wander out into the street and get hit by a 30mph pack of cyclists. This is especially true in the corners where crashes take place. We have lots of volunteers, but few of them are experienced enough to know what to do when someone slides out in turn #5 taking down six other riders with them. We are looking for people who would like to spend a Sunday afternoon helping us out. They'll get preferred parking, a prime viewing spot for the race, a free t-shirt, hat, food and drink. We need 18 course marshalls for each shift. We have two shifts to staff, 11am - 3pm, 3pm - 8pm.

Also, we are looking for volunteers who are interested in promoting safe cycling to children. In conjunction with the race we have a kids safety rodeo and kids race. Last year we had over 320 children participate. This year we expect 500 plus. After the rodeo, all children are invited to race on the "big course" right before the pro event. If you love kids, this is a truly rewarding way to get them started in cycling the right way!
Contact me if you are interested in helping at nalleyhrcvolunteers@yahoo.com or mjhome@mindspring.com. Regards, Michael Johnson.

IMBA Trail Care Crew Visits Blanket's Creek The Subaru IMBA Trail Care Crew will be visiting Blanket's Creek April 2-6. There will be work parties on Saturday and Sunday April 5 & 6. See the SORBA Woodstock site for all of the information.

Another Team Goes Down the Drain The Georgia based UCI III team that was rumored to have started this year, D&R Sportivo, has pulled a Noble House. They are officially no longer around. Riders have moved on. As seen from Greenville a few weeks ago, Kent Bostic is riding for the US Postal Master's team, and Robert Gaggioli is riding for John Wordin's new team Monex-Hot Wheels.

SE Cycling Breaks Story Before Velonews! You read about the route for the Tour De Georgia here yesterday. Velonews is just now getting around to posting it. Don't worry, I still love Velonews, too!

3-17-2003 George Hincapie Out of the Classics Cyclingnews.com is reporting that George Hincapie will sit out of his beloved Classics season in April. George has been suffering from a viral infection that will not abate. He will refocus on getting ready for the Tour De France in July and the later World Cups.

NC DH/DS Championships  MADHRA has been awarded the NC DS/MtnX/DH State Championships. Details are to follow on MADRA's website.

Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium Announces Race Program Roswell Velo has announced the race schedule for the Nalley HRC on May 4. The Men's Pro 1/2/3 races will be part of the National Racing Calendar with points towards national rankings. Changes include a combined Men's 4/5 field. Women 3's have a choice to race with the 1/2/3's or with the 3/4's. In the combined Women's 3/4 field, a $100 bonus is offered for the 3's. The Pro/I men's field will admit the top 5 finishers in the Men's 2/3 race. This is one of the best, fastest crit courses around. I had such a good time racing it last year. I highly encourage anyone to race or come out to watch. This is the final race of the "Crits, Grits, and a Heap of Greens" crit week in the Southeast.

Kerry Millar Kerry...what are you doing skidding to a halt down Wolf Pen on your backside?? Trying to show off again? Pictures of the carnage to follow. (The bike was fine. It needed a few scratches...)

3-18-2003 Brooks Info. Congratulations on pre-registering for the 11th Annual Georgia Spring Omnium. We tripled the pre-registration from last years event and you know how much time you will save by not having to stay in line. My goal was to email everyone's start time for the time trial, but due to the overwhelming number of Men Pro 1/2 registrations, I had to bump times a little for the Men Cat 3, Masters 35+ , Masters 45+, and Men Cat 5. If I emailed you a start time in those categories, your start time may be bumped another 5-6 Minutes.

Also, we have acquired the assistance of the registration staff from South  Carolina (same staff for the Greenville Series), will be conducting
registrations for us. We will finalize information, start times for time trial and I will forward a mass email to everyone who pre-registered. Worse case scenario is you can receive your start time Friday Night. I will do my best to get the information to you as soon as possible.

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: PARKING AND DELAYS --- Please leave early and plan enough time to pick up you packet either Friday Night at the host hotel between 6-9 PM, or pick it up Saturday morning, in the parking lot of Brooks Elementary School. Race parking is designated behind the new fire station on 85 Connector. Police officers will be there to direct traffic because the town of Brooks is having a small parade for their youth baseball team from 8AM - 8:45AM. Anticipate delays, and be patient. We had just under 200 pre-registrations, so Saturday morning registration should run smoothly.

Again, I will email everyone again about start times. Most likely, 80% of the times I sent you will not change, and some of yours may be 5-6 minutes later. Please direct your questions to this email address and do not call my home. Please email gavelo@bellsouth.net.  Thank you, and good luck to you all. WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS NEEDED  As Southeastern Cycling grows, I am no longer able to do everything myself (yes, this website is a one woman venture). I need writers and photographers to help with race reports, ride stories, pictures, and whatever else anyone wants to do! I can scan in pictures if you want to send them to me via "snail mail," and I will return them to you. You don't have to be a great writer or photographer, just someone that rides! It doesn't matter what category you are or if you do not race at all although Southeastern Cycling is slanted towards racing. I need mountain bikers, roadies, trackies, and cross junkies. If you are interested in helping, please email me. There is no compensation except a byline and you can tell your friends you are a published writer/photographer.

3-24-2003 Brooks Report Southeastern Cycling (me) attended the Spring Omnium this weekend. The road races and time trial were held in the small town of Brooks, GA, and Sunday's crits were in Griffin. As I can't be everywhere at once time, and I had a team to manage, some of the reports are a little sparse or are just my observations. Report results are not guaranteed accurate! If anyone would like to write up a full report on their team or race, I would love to post it! The full report is also available. I took tons of pictures, and they will follow later this week. If you want a good laugh, check out my time trial report

Road Races
Boneshakers had a good showing in the Cat. 5 crit. Jim Burt, Eric Anderson, and Chad Pepper represented the team in the Cat. 5
road race. They started near the back and worked their way up throughout the race to the front. They encountered a wall of riders at times and could not get through. Near the end of the race, several riders crashed in front of Chad. He immediately veered to the left, went around, and moved up several places. The pace was high as the field completed one lap of the 26 mile course. One rider commented that it was the fastest he had ever done 26 miles. Eric placed 8th, Chad was13th, Jim finished safely in the main pack at 24th.

Before heading to his car to take a nap, Chris Jackson said that he was mid pack in the Pro/1/2 race. No one could gather further details.

Several crashes marred the Cat. 4 men's race. Breakaways went but were always  reeled back in. The flat course does not lend itself kindly to those that try to get away. Bryan Holloway commented that "the squirrel factor was high." Racers are always nervous the first few races of the year. Mitch held on to a solid placing of 17th in a field of nearly 70.

The women's 1/2/3 race was dominated by Candice Blickem of the Genesis Scuba team. She broke away on the first lap and had 2:20 on the field going into the second lap. She maintained the lead to win the race. Christina Underwood (Fuji) won the field sprint for second.

In her second year of racing, Cat. 4 rider Elizabeth Gallo (NARC) has been riding strong during the Greenville Training series. She confirmed that she is
here to stay by taking the field sprint in the Cat. 4 Women's race by several yards. What a great first win for Elizabeth!

Crits
Sunday, the Boneshaker’s Team had a strong showing. In the Cat. 5 crit, both Jim Burt and Chad Pepper placed in the Top 15. Chris Jackson hung in for the entire Pro/1/2 race that would see many strong riders quit. Mitch Askew rode well in the Cat. 4 crit with a placing in the Top 15. Trish gave it her best in the Women’s 1/2/3 crit, but Genesis proved too strong. About half the field got dropped when Genesis put the hammer down about 10 minutes into the crit.

The Men's Cat. 4 crit was won by Cycleworks rider Chance Regina. The Cycleworks team put on a great effort to deliver Chance across the line. Mountain bike team Atlanta Pro Bikes was also at the front a lot stirring up the action. Several primes were announced. Going for what he thought was a "tachometer" prime, stunned Eric May (Cycleworks) learned that he had won a $100 gift certificate for a tatoo parlor in Griffen, Georgia. He is in negotiations to get $25 cash instead of the gift certificate. Mountain Biker Charles Rossingol (APB) placed second in the omnium.

The Women's 1/2/3 crit was very fast. Genesis and Fuji broke away about 10 minutes into the crit with a move that shattered the field in two. The second group nearly caught the break away in the final laps. Strong performances were put in by Genesis riders Candice Blickem and Kim Foland.

The Masters 45+ field saw nearly half of the field drop out with Cane Creek attacking from all sides.

The Pro/1/2 Men's crit saw the field string out on the first lap. Jittery Joe's pushed the pace the entire 60 minutes plus 3. Many riders struggled to maintain contact with the field and dropped out. Jittery Joes delivered a rider to the win.

The Women's 4 field shattered into bits less than half way through the race. A main pack of approximately 8 riders stayed together until the finish. Kerry Meyers (Peachtree Bikes) rode to a 6th place finish. Elizabeth Gallo (NARC) hung on for a strong finish and a win in the weekend's omnium.

Brooks Report-Cat. 4 Men Mitch Askew checks in with his Brooks report.

Velo Bella Velo Bella, a Monterrey, CA based all women's team, has announced their roster for 2003. Suzy Pryde, a former Kiwi Olympian, leads the road team. Shelly Whisenhant and Sabine Dukes lead the mountain bike team. Track racers Cathy Boland, Lisa Safstron, and Sally Wansboro compete at the Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point, GA.

New Women's Team The Prestige Subaru Women's Cycling team is a new all women's road team from Asheville, NC.

Big Creek Trail News RAMBO is working on a beginner trail at the Big Creek Park in Roswell that will not interfere with current trails. Mike Ritter has flagged it and is waiting on approval form the City of Roswell. Several of the big jumps have been torn down by the city. On July 26th, the SORBA wide workday will come to the Big Creek trail to work on the Beginner's trail.

3-25-2003 License Plate  (ATLANTA, GA) Senator David Adelman (D-Dekalb) introduced legislation
today that would create a Share The Road license plate and a bicycling safety activities program to be administered by the Governors Office of
Highway Safety. The license plate and program underscore Adelman's commitment to work with cyclists to help make Georgia a bicycling
friendly state. Under Adelman's Bill (SB 283), proceeds from the new tag would be used to make Georgia's roads safe for bicyclists.
Senator Adelman worked with members of the bicycling community to put together a Bill that will benefit all Georgians. David Crites, a Board
Member of the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign says, "If this Bill passes in its present form, Georgia could become one of the nation's most bicyclefriendly places." Senator Adelman stated, "I am proud to continue to work to break the gridlock and sprawl that is robbing Georgians of time with their
families. Part of the solution must be to make Georgia bicycle friendly." The Bill has broad bipartisan support. Senate Rules Chairman Don Balfour (R-Gwinnett) is a key co-sponsor of the Bill.

Silver Comet Connector David Jackson of the Cobb DOT commented about the Silver Comet Connector. "As we were completing plans for the connector, a developer assembled the properties adjacent to the connector near Gaylor Road. We have been working with the developer to limit the grades of the connector to 5% as we climb out of the railbed up to the East West Connector. My best estimate is that we will be able to resolve the design issues and proceed with the construction of the path next month (April). Completion of the path from the Mavell Trail Head to South Cobb Drive will be mid to late summer. A portion of trail was constructed from South Cobb Drive to Atlanta Road as part of the county's EW Connector Phase V, so the extension of the path will be all the way to Atlanta Road at Cumberland Parkway. A project to add a 10' wide multi-use sidewalk from Atlanta Road to Mt Wilkinson Parkway is scheduled for bidding this summer, with a completion projected for summer 2004. A bridge to carry pedestrians over I-285 parallel to the existing Mt Wilkinson bridge is scheduled for bidding this May, with a completion projected for summer 2004. The final link includes a multi-use sidewalk from Cumberland Parkway to US 41 to the Chattahoochee River is under design, but completion dates are not determined at this time. When all of these projects are completed, we will have extended the Silver Comet to the limits of our county, and will be there when Fulton County builds their path to meet with ours!!!!"

The planned/proposed Cobb County Trail system can be seen in map form. (Map is a JPEG.)

3-31-2003 George Hincapie on The Bachelor George Hincapie was recently spotted on the new episode of the television show "The Bachelor." He had a custom painted project Trek One with "Looking for Love" painted on it. Rumors were started on Frankie Andreu's site and on George's own site. Poor Gorgeous George. He needs to come down to Atlanta. Maybe love would be found in Midtown or VA Highlands or on the Bellyache. George is also looking for a cure to his ailing health problems that have prevented him from racing in his beloved Spring Classics. Cyclingnews.com reports that Hincapie is off the bike and is visiting different doctors around the USA to see if they can find the cause of the problem.

Cobb County Silver Comet Silver Comet Connector 03/27/03 East towards Atlanta! The Silver Comet Connector will extend the east end of
the Comet to South Cobb Drive in Smyrna. Construction should begin in April  2003 and be completed by mid to late summer 2003. The project will extend the trail one-half mile east from Smyrna's Mavell Road trailhead to the Publix shopping center at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and  East-West Connector. This should provide plenty of parking relief for the  popular and often overflowing Mavell Road trailhead. Not only will the
shopping center provide easier car access via main roads, the restaurants and stores will be convenient for trail users to "fuel up" on food and supplies. Cobb County DOT purchased the right-of-way for this half-mile section when they were constructing the East-West Connector. The PATH Foundation will provide the $400,000 needed for the trail construction. Next in the works is a $905,000 10-foot wide sidewalk project that will zigzag it's way from the Silver Comet Trail to the Cumberland and Galleria Mall area in Smyrna, then eventually to the Paces Mill Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. This sidewalk will be multiple-use for cyclists, skaters, walkers and runners as is the rest of the trail network. Planned sidewalk routes include Spring Hill Parkway, Paces Ferry, Spring Hill and Atlanta Roads. The sidewalk project should take six months to complete and is expected to begin in Spring 2003.

Formatting I'm aware that there has been a problem with the formatting of Southeastern Cycling. I'm working on correcting the problem and speeding up the download time for the page.

4-3-2003 Track Racing The first track race of the season was last night at the DLV. Kelli Rogan did a find job officiating and keeping track of the chaos that is track racing. In racing action, Heather Albert (formerly Goldy's--at least I think it was Heather) gave Iona and Esther a run for their money in the Women's 5 lap scratch race. The Men's B division was full of new faces and some returning from last year including Leigh Foti (Cycleworks). The B and Women's fields were combined for the points race. It is the biggest combined field I have seen at a Wednesday night race. Zack Taylor (Genesis) proved why he is one of the fastest juniors around with top placings in the Men's A points race and Men's B divisions. I believe Tony Scott (Genesis) and Zack were 1-2 in the Men's A Points race.  Teams represented on the first night of track racing include The Bike Shop, Genesis, Peoplesoft, Boneshaker Bicycles, NARC/Free Flite, Velo Bella, Orbea, Roswell Velo, EPVA (East Point Velodrome)/Adrenaline, and several others.

Tarheel Trailblazers Swap Meet-Charlotte The Tarheel Trailblazers will have a swap meet on May 10th from 1-4 pm at the Dillworth Elementary School Gym. This will coincide with the Bike Charlotte events.

4-4-2003 It's Time To Get Excited! Let's support the local professionals that are racing in the inaugaral Tour De Georgia!

Oachita Challenge My "crazy" friend from Florida, Jim Smart, finished the Oachita Challenge in Arkansas last weekend. Crazy, why? He did it on a FIXED gear. Not a singlespeed, a fixed gear. Off road, on singletrack. There are not many guys I know that would do that. Ok, Jim is the only one. Read his great ride report!

Knob Scorcher The Ashville-Citizen Times did an article in today's edition on next weekend's Knob Scorcher.

SC Heritage Series The SC Heritage Series crits will be taking place the week of April 28 in between the Tour De Georgia and the Roswell Historic Criterium

Campus Classic This weekend I attended the Campus Classic mountain bike race in Sewanee, TN. It is part of the TBRA series. Much to my surprise, there was a Georgia contingent. While not quite from Georgia, Daryl and Dawn McKenzie (Cartecay Bikes) were out for one of their first races of the year. Daryl had a strong showing in the Expert Master Men's category, and Dawn got her feet wet in the Expert Women's 28 mile race. Pro Erin Winter (Porterfield Tire) handily beat her competitors despite a flat that left her in second place after the end of the first lap. Athens Pro Jeff Shirey (Porterfield Tire) has a very strong ride for 3rd place in Senior Expert Men in the 28 mile race. In Senior Sport Women, I battled the "breaking in of the new bike" mechicals for a third place finish. It was great to see former GAP regular Carey Lowrey (The Outdoor Store) from Athens, GA back racing after a year's hiatus; she trounced the competition and took first in Master Sport Women.

SE Cycling Updates I apologize in advance for the possible lack of updates this week. I'm having surgery and will probably be "out of it" for a few days on good painkillers, sitting at home watching "Breaking Away" over and over, and sleeping. I hope to make one of the late week group rides to say hi.

NEWS FLASH! The Historic Roswell Crit's Women's race has been added to the NRC! With national ranking points on the line, expect to see a strong field in the women's division.

4-8-2003 Navigators Confirmed for Tour De Geogia The United States-based TTII professional cycling team, Navigators, has confirmed its participation in the inaugural South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series, to be staged April 29-May 2, 2003. The South Carolina race week offers $40,000 in prize money. In
conjunction with the Shelby, N.C., and Roswell, GA, races, the week of April 29 through May 4 is the richest single week of criterium racing in America, for a total of more than $70,000 in prize money.

Navigators, which has spent the early season contesting primarily in Europe, will return to the United States at the end of April for the Tour de Georgia and the South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series to compete for their share of prize money. According to Navigator’s Director Sportif, Ed Beamon, the team’s projected roster for the South Carolina series includes: Marty Nothstein, Olympic Gold Medallist, Henk Vogels, Olympian and 2002 Pro Cycling Tour Champion, Siro Camponogara, Vassili Davidenko, Oleg Grichkine, Ryan Guay, Glen Mitchell, Ciaran Power, and Chris Wherry

Also committed for the South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series are United
States Postal Service and Saturn. Jittery Joe’s, Team Healthnet, Colovita/Bolla, Schroeder Iron, Prime Alliance, and Ofoto are only some of the other UCI teams already making preparations to compete in this world-class event. The series consists of four evening criteriums held in different cities along the South Carolina Heritage Corridor. Races begin on April 29 in Anderson, moving through Walterboro to Greenwood, and ending on May 2 in Aiken. Race courses will be 100K or 50 miles through the downtown areas of these historic cities. South Carolina’s Heritage Corridor, which extends from the mountains in the northwest to the Atlantic Ocean, has long been recognized as a world-class training ground for professional road cyclists and mountain biking teams. Currently, U.S. Postal’s George Hincapie resides and
trains in Greenville. The series is made possible by the joint efforts of Hincapie Sports, the South Carolina Heritage Corridor and the South Carolina Department of
Parks, Recreation and Tourism. For information, or to register for the South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series, contact Rich Hincapie at (864)298-0392.

Cycling License Plate The Georgia Cycling License Plate bill passed the Georgia Senate unanimously. From David Crites: We just received word that SB283, the SHARE THE ROAD motor license plate Bill, passed the Senate side of the Georgia Legislature. There were no votes against it. The Bill's sponsor, Senator David Adelman, quoted on the Senate floor the earlier words of the Governor's Floor Leader... "the Bill would pass unanimously if bicyclists would just stop sending e-mails."  The bill must still pass the Georgia House before it becomes law.

Brooks Time Trial The times for the Brooks Time Trial are up.

Wisdom Teeth My wisdom teeth removal went well today. Pain drugs and ice are my best friends right now. I can't eat much besides ice cream although I did manage to eat a can of Campbell's Noodle Soup. My face is really swollen. I imagine that I'm going to be off of the bike for a few days.

Georgia State RR and TT Championships The Fulton Flyers will host the Georgia State Road Race and Time Trial Championships on May 24-25 near Calhoun, GA.  State Championship jerseys and year long bragging rights are on the line. Maps are available for both the RR and TT.

4-10-2003 Tammy Tammy Kauffman has sent me her latest writing titled "Naked Before The Mirror" that tells the tale of her new passion-singlespeeding.

New Boneshakers Team Member The Boneshaker's Cycling Team is proud to announce a new member of the team. Pro mountain biker Bob Cagle will be racing for Boneshakers-Ace Electric off road. Bob will also don a Boneshakers jersey on the road in Pro/1/2 events. Welcome Bob!

Colavita-Bolla Team Roster The Southeastern Colavita-Bolla team has announced their roster for 2003. Members include Masters National Champions Kent Bostic and Pat McCallion. Other members include Thad Dulin and Steve Colavito, who will also serve as team manager. Atlantan Shannon Hutchinson will be on the Women's Elite Team.

4-15-2003 Roswell Crit Needs Host Housing This will be the second year for the Historic Roswell Criterium and we are expecting more than EVER (more than last year that is). I'll make this as brief as possible. Roswell Velo (formerly Alpharetta Velo)
will have it's Second Annual Historic Roswell Criterium and several Pros / Pro Teams will be traveling to the race. The race is scheduled for May 4 and I will be helping to provide
host housing for some of the pros. If you would like to offer a room or two for the race please let me know. Several people have already offered, but we still need several more.
Click here http://www.nalleyhrc.com/ for more race information.  Before you reply, consider the following: 1) You are not obligated to 'babysit' these people. 2) You shouldn't feel like you need to feed these people, but I'm sure they would appreciate it. 3) If you are working the race or racing (ie. leaving the house at 5:30 AM), you may be leaving them alone in your new PARTY HOUSE / Food Locker for several hours. 4) It can be a once in a lifetime opportunity. 5) MOST of these guys don't make a lot of money and could use free
room and board for a night (or two). 6) Because most are coming in from Shelby, they may arrive late and leave early. As I said before, just let me know if you are interested.
Let me know how many people you can host and how many days you can host them (if they need to arrive early). Thanks, Tim

Raccoon Road Race Results will be up soon. There were unofficially 433 racers, making it the largest one day race in Tennessee. Team Peggy and the North Chattanooga Cycle Club thank you for your participation. Congratulations to all of the winners, including Cat. 4 Men's Winner from Atlanta Chris Chotas (Cliff Bar) and Cat. 4 Women's Winner Elizabeth Gallo (NARC) from Norcross.

4-4-2003 Tim Henry to Race Tour de Georgia by Tim Muller

Pro Cylist Tim Henry

Tim Henry starts his 2003 season off with new colors and a chance to race with the best professional cyclists in the country.

What can be said about the 21-year-old sprinting phenomenon from Roswell Georgia? Tim Henry has joined the premier list of professionals to come out of Georgia including local superstars Chris Pic and Bill Oyster. In his debut season as a professional cyclist, Tim has already secured his first win of the season. His repeat win at the Brooks Cycling Road Race proves his talents cannot be overlooked. In 2002 Tim won the Georgia State Road Race title with the help of his Realitybikes.com U23 teammates. A month later he again proved his presence with a win at the Georgia State Criterium Championship. Beaming from success and determination Tim once more proved his dominance with a 5th place finish at the 100k Cycling Classic. Tim began his cycling at the age of 15 with the Velo Rockets junior’s organization. He quickly moved up to a category 2 cyclist and joined the Zaxby’s U23 Squad. With his true talents beginning to emerge he was selected as Team leader for the 2002 Realitybikes.com U23 team. With 5 wins and 2 state jerseys in 2002, the professional teams began to take notice. Still unsure of his racing plans for 2003, Tim took a 3-month hiatus to hike Europe. Upon his return late December, The Cycling Team of West Virginia (Go-Mart) offered Tim a spot on their new professional program. Tim’s 2003 racing plans include participating in the 1st annual Tour of Georgia which will begin mid April, the US Pro Championships in Philadelphia, and the always exciting San Francisco Grand Prix in late September. When asked what makes him stand out from other local and national competitors, Tim replied “ My sprint”. “I can muster up enough energy to hang with the best breakaway riders then out sprint them at the line”. With the support of his Dad, family, and local Georgia fans, Tim should be ready to take the 2003 National Racing Calendar by storm. With plenty of confidence and determination, a National racing title is certainly within reach for this young rising star. Be on the lookout for this NEW Georgia Professional at a race near you.

From Trish: It's Time To Get Excited! Let's support the local professionals that are racing in the inaugaral Tour De Georgia!

American Riders for Tour De Georgia In addition to the riders that have been mentioned on Southeastern Cycling the last few weeks, there is one European based American scheduled to be at the Tour De Georgia. Sidermac: "Fast" Freddy Rodriguez. Another interesting note: George Hincapie is not on the US Postal roster but Roland Green (Current World Mountain Biking Champion) . I've heard from several sources that George may be at the Tour De Georgia. It's possible the roster is wrong. Let's see in a week!

Southeastern Cycling at Tour De Georgia Southeastern Cycling will be covering the final two stages of the Tour De Georgia! I'm also racing Twilight, so the coverage probably won't be posted until Monday. I have a media pass and will try to get some "inside stuff" at the Tour.

4-18-2003 Asheville Track Racing Starts Track racing starts in Asheville on April 22. The Asheville Citizen-Times recently profiled their track

New Track in Columbia, SC There may soon be a new practice track near Columbia, SC in Cayce. Carolina Velo has been using the the old Columbia Speedway track for practice several times per week. The half-mile asphalt track has holes and cracks, but local cyclists have been working to clean up the property. It is banked 12 degrees in the corners and 6 degrees on the straightaways.

NC State Dual and Downhill Championships The NC State Dual Slalom and Downhill State Championships have been moved to the weekend of May 24-25 at Wolf Laurel because of an unforseen circumstance. The race is part of the MADHRA series. Donations are being accepted for a large container (or more)  of "adult microbrewed refreshements."

LIVE COVERAGE OF THE TOUR DE GEORGIA! Velonews.com has just announced that they will have LIVE coverage of all stages of the Tour De Georgia. YES!! (Sorry, ya'll...I just can't take the entire week off from work. Gotta save the vacation for going to NORBA NCS races and Cross nationals in Dec. I'll have lots of good stuff when I get back from Twilight and the TdG, though). Anyway, cruise on over to Velonews to keep yourself occupied next week while you are stuck at the office like me.

Tour De Georgia Preliminary Rosters The TdG has released a preliminary rider roster. See Velonews.com.  Fred Rodriguez is scheduled to be at Amstel Gold in Europe on Sunday, so we will see if one tired Fred shows up at TdG.

Chris Pic 7 Up rider and Dahlonega resident Chris Pic is scheduled to race the TdG. Go Chris! I'm sure Tina will be around, too, especially considering that Shelby and Roswell are the next week. I'm taking bets that Tina will repeat her win at Roswell last year. Uh hum, of course I will be out there defending my title in the 3/4 Women's race (yes, I'm a 3...I finally did upgrade.)

AJC Coverage of the Tour Wow! The Atlanta Journal Constitution has coverage of the Tour. Thing I learned: The leader's jersey will be yellow, KOM: big peaches (like the polka dots, Sprinter's Jersey-orange, Best Young Rider-Blue. Tape delayed TELEVSION COVERAGE on Turner South at 2 pm on May 3. There is also a handy course and street closings map.

Tour De Georgia Riders There are a few Georgians competing in the Tour. Jesse Lawler and Kurt Garin are on Jittery Joes. Kurt is a first year pro and moved up from the Realitybikes.com U23 team ranks.

4-22-2003 More Tour De Georgia News It seems that the AJC is covering the Tour all week! Today's article is about the prologue in Savannah. They liken it to qualifying in NASCAR.

Live Coverage Don't forget that Velonews.com will have LIVE coverage of the Tour!!

Daily Peloton Coverage The Daily Peloton will also have daily coverage of the Tour De Georgia. They have a nice preview which covers all of the stages and possible favorites for the stages.

The Home Court Advantage Bike.com has an article on the Athens based Jittery Joe's UCI III team. Atlanta's own Jason Spruill took the super photos. The team talks realistically about their chances for a win at the Tour De Georgia as well as the SC Heritage Series.

Tour De Georgia Prologue The results are in for the Prologue in Savannah! 1. Nathan O'Neill, (AUS) Saturn - 4:55, 2. Chris Horner, Saturn - 5:02, 3. Greg Henderson, (NZL), 7UP - 5:02, 4. John Lieswyn - 7UP - 5:04, 5. Eric Wohlberg (Can), Saturn - 5:06,

IMBA Trail Care Crew IMBA has posted pictures of the recent visit of the Trail Care Crew to Blanket's Creek.

Hincapie Won't Start in Dunkirk Velonews is reporting that George Hincapie will not be starting in the Four Days of Dunkirk in early may as previously stated. In an email, he says that he has gotten better but is not quite ready to race. George is expected to be ready for the Tour De France and the second half of the World Cup. He may also race Worlds in Canada in October.

4-23-2003  Tour De Georgia News Georgian Saul Raisin (Ofoto-Lombardi) will wear the blue jersey for the top Under 23 rider when Wednesday's stage from Augusta to Macon starts.. He posted at time of 5:18 in Tuesday's Savannah Prologue. Saul is from Dalton, the start of Saturday's Queen (mountain) stage.

The AJC continues to provide daily coverage of the Tour. Vote in their on-line
poll. Tell them cycling is a great, real sport!

The official Tour website has photos that you can download daily.  Cyclingnews.com seems to have the most photos.

Local papers are also covering the Tour. SavannahNOW coverage of the Prologue. The Macon Telegraph has many, many articles on the Tour (Search for Tour De Georgia.) There are too many to list. The Columbus Ledger-Inquirer has a few articles. Also with a few articles is the small town paper the Cedartown Standard. Cedartown is along the Silver Comet Trail.  Rome is hosting the end of Friday's stage, and the Rome News-Tribune has been covering the Tour. The Northwest GA Daily Citizen has an article on Dalton's Saul Raisin. One common theme I've noticed is how many papers are comparing the Tour and Cycling to NASCAR or stock car racing. We have to do what we have to do to get our sport noticed here in the South.

John Leiswyn has a diary over at Cyclingnews.com about the Savannah Prologue. He parts with the words "Two and a half hours in the van over to Augusta, and more great southern hospitality. They are really nice here!"

4-24-2003 Tour De Georgia Stage One Wednesday's first stage of the Tour from Augusta to Savannah saw Henk Vogels (Navigators) win a sprint finish to take the Orange Leader's Jersey. Vogels also picked up the Sprinter's Jersey. Saul Raisin (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports0 held onto the best Young Rider's jersey. Chris Horner (Saturn) holds the King of the Mountains jersey. Check out those peaches on the KOM jersey! US Pro champion Chann McRae was born in Albany, GA and now calls Texas home.

Traveling Marshall Chris Hurt from Atlanta is a traveling marshal with the Tour. His daily journal can be found over at the Daily Peleton. It sounds like he is having a lot of fun!

4-25-2003  Tour De Georgia Leaders In Thursday's second stage of the Tour, Henk Vogels (Navigators) came in third behind Moreno Dibiase (Formaggi Pinzolo) and Fred Rodriguez (Vini Caldirola-Sidermec) and held onto the orange leader's jersey. Miguel Meza holds onto the Sprinter's Jersey, and Chris Horner (Saturn) retains the KOM jersey. Georiga resident Saul Raisin (Ofoto) remains in the best Young Rider's blue jersey. It is still very tights for the GC with the following riders in the Top 5: 1. Henk Vogels, 2. Chris Horner :04, 3. Nathan O'Neill (Saturn) :05, 4. John Lieswyn (7 Up/Maxxis) :12, 5. Phil Zajicek (Saturn) :13.

Good Luck at Twilight Good luck to all of those heading out to Twilight this weekend to race. It's supposed to be beautiful. I'll see some of ya'll Sat. morning for the Women's 3/4 race in Athens but am heading out to cover the Tour and won't be back in Athens this weekend. If anyone has pictures or a report from Twilight, please email them to me! Since I won't be there, I'd love to post them!

Southeastern Cat. 4 Women's Series The Southeastern Women's Cat 4 series has a new web page hosted by Team Fuji. The Women's Series is a season long competition designed to encourage new women racers. Upcoming races that are part of the series include Carolina Volkswagon Weekend in Charlotte, NC, the East Carolina Criterium in Greenville, NC, and the Wake Habitat Cycling Challenge in Cary, NC. See the webpage for a full schedule.

One Big Bella I have to share a story from the Velo Bellas, an all women's team (well, almost) in California. Sabine Dukes, the Queen Bella, sent out an email about the one man on their team, Chris Drake. He donned a Velo Bella jersey to race in the Clydesdale class at Sea Otter. As one fellow racer remarked, "Dude, you've got to be the Ugliest Velo Bella I've ever seen!" Chris is Bella rider Susie Pryde's husband. See Chris in his cute pink outfit here.

Bean Team Riders Out Jittery Joe's has pulled two of its riders out of the Tour De Georgia. Jeff Hopkins and Jesse Lawler will save their energies for Twilight on Saturday in Athens, homebase of the Bean Team.  Kurt Garin abandoned on the second stage for unspecified reasons.

I'm Outta Here There probably wont' be any more Southeastern Cycling updates until Monday. I'm outta here to go to Twilight and the Tour De Georgia. Look next week for tons of Tour De Georgia coverage and photos.

4-27-2003 Tour De Georgia I have some photos of Stage 4 on cyclingnews.com. More to report later. I should have everything up by the middle/end of this week. I'd hoped to have the up sooner, but.....

I have the best friends! I have the best friends. Part of the reason for the delay in getting results up is that my car was stolen during the Tour De Georgia in downtown Atlanta today. The bikes were not in it, thankfully! Thanks to the best guys and gals out there (Mary, Kaj, and Bry)...thanks for hanging with me waiting for the police. Ya'll are simply the BEST. I owe you a raincheck on the ice cream! I will be dealing with the whole "car thing" for a few days.

Stolen Bike Rack My car and bike rack were stolen last night (Sunday) in downtown Atlanta after the Tour De Georgia. The car was recovered mostly kind of sort of in one piece, but the bike rack wasn't. If anyone sees/finds/hears about a Yakima rack being sold without the keys, please email me immediately. The rack consists of 4 Q towers, round cross bars, two wheelforks, and 2 steelhead trays, and skewers. The skewers don't lock even though they had locks in them at the time of the theft. There is also damage to the Q towers and probably the locking mechanisms of the Q towers. The Q towers fit Honda Civics.
There is a police report on it. If anyone hears of such a rack being sold, please contact me. Thanks! Please pass the word on!!

Tour De Georgia Photos I have SIX rolls of film to get developed and go through and scan in. They will be up soon! I also have some great interviews with the pros!

Tour De Georgia Photos Many people were taking pictures at the Tour De Georgia. Martin Tromblee took some pictures of Stages 3, 4, and 5. Martin has some great pictures from before the fourth stage in Dalton. Amateur racer Gary Quellet took some fantastic photos as well!   One of my favorites is "What is Antonio Cruz doing??"

Tour De Georgia Photo Gallery I was finally able to get all of my Tour De Georgia photos up. Please visit the Gallery. The photos from Stage 5 that I took on the back of the moto turned out fantastically. I saved the images a little higher resolution than I normally do, so give the photos time to load.

Tour Diary John Lieswyn has a great diary entry about the Tour on Cyclingnews.com.

5-1-2003 Vogels Looks to Defend Roswell Title Henk Vogels (Navigators) is looking to defend his title at this weekend's Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium. Vogels told a reporter in Walterboro, SC, "My goal is to do well this weekend," said Vogels. "Right now, we're just trying to get as many wins as we can." Vogels and the Navigators are competing in the SC Heritage Series this week. More than $40,000 in prize money is up for grabs.

SC Heritage Series The first two rounds of the SC Heritage Series have been a battle between Saturn and Navigators. Saturn is fresh off their win at Tour De Georgia, and the Navigators are back from their early spring European campaign. Both are looking to make a splash on the crit circuit as well this year. In Tuesday's race in Anderson, SC, Saturn's Viktor Rapinski rode to victory followed by Danny Pate (Prime Alliance) and Roberto Gaggioli (Monex). Walterboro on Wednesday, Oleg Grichkine (Navigators) won over Eric Wohlberg (Saturn) and Henk Vogels (Navigators). Athens based Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's) was 6th.

SC Heritage Series-Aiken In Friday's final round of the SC Heritage Series, Henk Vogel (Navigators) took the win over Chris Horner (Saturn). A 17 rider break formed with 35 laps to go. The pace was extremely high, and less than one third of the field finished.

Shelby NRC Race The Shelby Crit NRC race provided victories for two great cyclists. In the Women's race, Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) overcame the loss of her mother only
a week ago to win in a field sprint. Atlantan Shannon Hutchinson (Colavita-Bolla) was third. In the men's race, several rich primes were offered. Vassili Davidenko (Navigators) won the most unusual (??) prime ever handed out (no, it wasn't a tatoo Eric!)...He won a free vasectomy from a local clinic. A breakaway of 10 riders formed after 14 laps. Although Jittery Joes and Ofoto-Lombardi Sports tried to bring the break back, it stayed away.
By the end, only four riders were away. John Lieswyn (7 Up/Maxxis) beat out  Eric Wholberg (Saturn) and Vallili Davidenko (Navigators).

Nalley Historic Roswell Crit The Historic Roswell Crit took place on Sunday, May 4 right off of the square in Roswell. Hundreds of local and national caliber riders showed up to race on the 5 turn, fast course. Winning the men's 4/5 race was Eric May (Cycleworks) from Marietta. Eric said "The course sure was darn fast. Too bad there were no tatoo primes. I need another one." Behind Eric was the powerful Cycleworks team of Bryan Holloway, Shawn Flemming, Brad, and Chance Regina. Russ (Kalahari) won the 3/4 Men's race. Takinig top honors in the Women's 3/4 crit was Micah Edwards from Birmingham Alabama. Emily Pullen (Roswell Velo) captured second. The Pro/1/2/3 Women's race featured a $2000 purse and tight competition with such national level teams as TDS, Diet Rite, Victory Brewing, Basis, and Genesis. The field stayed together for much of the race. Dahlonega Resident Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) won the field sprint with Shannon Hutchinson (Colavita-Bolla) taking second and Gina Grain (Victory Brewing) in third. The men's race saw several breakaway attempts but came down to a field sprint in the end. Jonas Carney (Prime Alliance) edged out Schroeder Iron's Miguel Meza for the win. Alex Candelario (Prime Alliance) rounded out the podium. Confusion reigned after the men's race as Schroeder Iron and Navigators protested the finish. In the end, the results stood. Photos and interviews coming soon!

Roswell Interviews Tim Henry (West Virginia), Men's Pro/1 Race
Southeastern Cycling: How was it out there today?
Tim: It was really fast. Probably fast as the other races this week. Nothing new.
Southeastern Cycling: How is your knee doing? Is it feeling any better?
Tim: Yeah. It didn't hurt. It started to feel a little tender towards the end but no actual pain. I made it through this week. Now I can rest this whole week. McMinnville will be the next time I can push it.
Southeastern Cycling: How was it out here racing in the historic part of your hometown?
Tim: I love it. Every corner I had people yelling my name, all the straightaways. My family came to town. It was great; I love it.

5-6-2003 Big Creek Ground Breaking From RAMBO: "The day we've been waiting for has finally arrived. We're breaking ground on the new trail at Big Creek! Be there at 8:00. Bring water, gloves and I would suggest appropriate clothing to help keep the
poison ivy we may encounter away! As we are limited to the amount of tools on hand, we could use any Mcleods, fire rakes, and Pulaskis you may have. If you don’t have any “official” trail tools, we could also use hard rakes, large hoes, axes, shovels, pruning shears and loppers. We’ll stop working at noon and lunch will be provided. Hours will go towards race points or the Trek trial program." Email Stephen for more information.

Ruta Del Hall Time: This Saturday at 10 am, meet at the Gainesville College Trail for the Ruta del Hall. This is one grand loop, riding all of the trails in Hall county. 31 miles

5-8-2003 Trail Closures Bull Mountain and Blanket's Creek are closed because of the recent heavy rainfalls. Here is an email from SROBA. "Many of the ATV and horse trails in the Chattahoochee National Forest, including the Jake Mtn./Bull Mtn. trails are temporarily closed due to wet conditions. While bicycles have not been specifically mentioned, it would probably be wise to refrain from riding these trails until we've had a few
days to dry out. For more info, go here

Roswell Photos Bill Parsons submitted some great photos from Roswell to cyclingnews.com.

5-9-2003 Mike Jones Team West Virginia Pro Mike Jones tells Jaime Nichols at the Daily Peloton what he thought about the TdG and how West Virginia did.

5-12-2003 Gwinnett News Message from: Bicycle Users of Gwinnett Here's the first DOT public information meeting held in a while. The significance of this project is that Old P'tree/Roger's Bridge Rd is already a heavily used bike corridor. The curb and gutter addition would create a hazardous situation for cyclists should inadequate shoulder be
provided. During the last year, GwinDOT has patched the asphalt on west bound Old
P'tree to provide an adequate 2-3' shoulder in most spots. However, if the  contract is built like the recent Winter's Chapel Rd and Bunten Rd additions, the gutter pan will end right at the white line! With a wide curve along Old P'tree, west bound cyclists may be asked to travel IN THE LANE and be in exposed to drivers who won't see them until it's too late. (It's happened to me personally.) Please plan to attend this PIM next Thursday. Esspecially after the response we got re Bunten Rd and Winter's Chapel, GwinDOT needs to know
that we are motivated and expect to have our needs addressed. Your voice needs to be heard if our county is to become more bikeable. Jim Sandlin

Public Information Meeting: Old Peachtree Road (Bunten Road – Shopping Center), PN 4103 Rogers Bridge Road @ Main Street / Chattahoochee Drive, PN 4133 Buford Highway @ Old Peachtree Rd / Rogers Bridge Rd, PN 9648 On Thursday June 19, 2003, the Gwinnett County Department of  Transportation will hold a Public Information Meeting on the above mentioned projects. Project number 4103 would widen Old Peachtree Road to three lanes while adding curb, gutter and sidewalk to the roadway. Project number 4133 would realign the intersection of Rogers Bridge Road with Main Street / Chattahoochee River. Lastly, Project number 9648 will improve the intersection of Buford Highway and Old Peachtree Road / Rogers Bridge Road by adding turn lanes, curb and gutter and pedestrian facilities. The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Cafeteria of Duluth High
School, 3737 Brock Road, Duluth, Georgia 30096. The design will be presented in an informal setting. Representatives from the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation will present designs and displays to answer questions and discuss the projects. For additional information, please call 770-822-7449.

Share the Road Tag The Share The Road Tag issue is dead for this year. The State House neglected to act on the issue because of some other controversial tags. A House Committee has been formed to study the issue of specialty license tags.

Blanket's Creek is Open! From SORBA-Woodstock: The rumors are true. Blankets was closed, and it looked as if it might stay that way until the lake went down in two or three weeks. Due to the extreme weather, the two dips just before before the first climb
(when going counter-clockwise) is under about 6 to 8 feet of Lake Allatoona. The Saturday work party saw 25 volunteers who spent most of the morning doing a re-route that not only
eliminated some areas that were in need of repair, but the re-route is finished and Blankets Creek is now open.

Collegiate National Championships Congratulations to Tony Scott (Genesis), who races for Georgia Perimeter College, in the collegiate ranks. He was second at the Collegiate Criterium National Championships in California on Friday.

More TDG Coverage The Daily Peloton continues to publish rider's diaries of the TDG. Tyler Wren of the Colavita-Bolla UCI III team shares his story. Manny Samaniego (Cycleworks) also gives his thoughts on the TdG in his column
Talking Cycling.

5-13-2003 East Point Grand Prix #1 The action at the velodrome Saturday night was fast and exciting. A real battle between Shannon Hutchinson (Colavita-Bolla) and Esther Davis (Orbea) started out the night in the Women's division. Each rider won a race, and Shannon took the sprint final as well as the overall. Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) and Mike
Tillman (Schroeder Iron) battled it out in the Pro-Am division. A strong showing was put in by local rider Adam Payne (EPVA). During the points race, Tillman on the 30 lap "crowd" prime, which money is collected from the crowd for the rider's purse. In the end, Jeff and Mike tied for points and were forced into a sudden death 3 lap match sprint. Hopkins took the lead, always keeping his eye on Tillman, until the last lap when Tillman attacked. Hopkins countered and took the win.

Bull Mountain Trails Open Word from SORBA and the US Forest Service came today that the trails at Bull Mountain are now open again.

5-14-2003 Friday is Bike to Work Day Bike To Work Day is this Friday, May 16th! What is Bike To Work Day? It is a day when thousands of people across
the nation will be biking to work to show that bicycling is a great form of transportation; a great alternative to driving alone and being stuck in traffic; a great way to get your daily exercise while getting to your place of business! Want to join in the Bike To Work Day fun and make some friends? The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign will be running 6 Commuter Bike Trains across the metro area on Bike to Work Day. A Bike Train is a caravan of
bicycle riders following a specific route on a regular schedule. Riders can hop on or peel off at any point along the route. It's pollution-free, great exercise, and lots of fun! Midtown Transportation Solutions will have a table set up in front of Colony Square at Peachtree & 14th Street to greet the Peachtree train and all other Midtown cyclists. Come visit us as we will be providing breakfast for cyclists courtesy of Chick Fil-A and Dunkin Donuts. There
will also be a drawing to win prizes from area bike stores. Below is the train coming thru Midtown. For additional bike train schedules, contact kenny@midtownalliance.org, or the folks at the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign who can also help you with route planning if
you can't join one of the bike trains. Their web site is www.atlantabike.org.

Peachtree Train ? Dennis Hoffarth, engineer
7: 35am Boarding begins - corner of Peachtree and Lenox
7:45 All-aboard! Leave Peachtree and Lenox
7:53 Peachtree and West Paces Ferry (connect here for the Vinings
Train)
8:03 Peachtree and Peachtree Battle
8:10 Peachtree and Collier
8:20 Peachtree and 14th St.
8:27 Peachtree and Ponce de Leon
8:35 Peachtree and Edgewood (Woodruff Park) ? terminal
The bike trains are engineered by experienced riders, and include a conductor who acts as sweep and who tries to make sure those getting on are welcomed and situated on the train (that is, finds a comfortable place in the group). The trains make stops if people are seen waiting along the route -- but not long, idling stops just in case someone shows up. When someone needs to get off, they usually let either the engineer or conductor know beforehand, and then when their "stop" comes, they call out and pull over or make their turn, and we all wave good-bye, have a good day, etc. --- It's very uplifting!

(Trish--Ok, no I'm not riding into work on Friday. I'm lucky to be riding at all right now. My nasty crash on Sunday at the Lake Russell WMA has me pretty beat up, and my right elbow is still very much in the healing process. A few days off are in order for me! The crit nearly killed me last night. My hats off to those that commute by bike to work!)

Pro Sighting Roswell Pro Tim Henry was sighted at the Marietta Crit last night. Tim is a columnist for Southeastern Cycling. With other big guns absent, the group rode a hard tempo most of the "race" until a Nalley Rider and another rider went off the front with 5 to go. The peloton caught them at the line with Barry Brown (Genesis) taking the sprint for first.

Mountain Bike Skills Clinic From SORBA: "Mike Riter and I are going to be offering a mountain bikeskills clinic for SORBA members on Thursday evenings starting May 29 at 6:15pm at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, GA. There is limited space in this class. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to participate. Hope to see you in class." Email Sherri Hall for more information.

5-15-2003 Rain, Rain Go Away--Trish's Rant Does anyone else feel like not riding this week? Is irt the long hours I've been putting in at work? Is it the pain I feel in my elbow as I go over any bump on the road? Is it that I have friends in town and have had my mind on doing other things besides riding? Is it that I've been riding too much and need a break? Am I overtrained? No, it is the weather. This grey, rainy pallor that has been hanging over Atlanta since the beginning of last week has me in the dumps. I have felt lethargic since yesterday morning. Tuesday night was so nice--sunny with temperatures in the lower 70's and very little humidity. The crit was fast but not ridiculous. It was a great workout. My recovery ride last night started out with drizzle. I had on knee warmers and might have had on arm warmers if I could get them on over my bandages. I woke up this morning to rain on my roof and the drone of the traffic reporter talking about all of the wrecks on Atlanta's freeways. I knew it would not be a fun commute into work. The grey wetness is back. Atlanta in the spring is supposed to be full of sunshine, flowers, and group rides after work. Instead, it feels like I have seen nothing but wet roads and the inside of my living room as I do intervals on my trainer. Most of my friends have decided to become hermits until after the rain lifts, huddling inside with their remote controls watching the sunny stages of the Giro D'Italia, eating burritos from Willies, and dreaming of riding outside.

I swear I saw Noah's Ark floating down Peachtree this morning. I wonder if he would consider rescuing a depressed cyclist and her bikes and taking her to Hawaii for a little sun? Probably not. I will be racing in the rain and mud this weekend anyway--red, thick Carolina clay, that ooey, gooey red Carolina mud that sticks to everything. Why would I want to give up that fun for a chance to go to the "Big Island?"

Sunshine...please come back! We miss you!

Helen Fat Tire Festival From all of the emails I have seen, the Helen Fat Tire Festival is going to happen regardless of weather. Check out SORBA's web page for any updates.

Old SE Cycling Content There is some content on SE Cycling from 1996-2000 that I will soon be archiving. I will probably keep some of the more interesting pieces and articles, but most of it has to go. I'm hoping to find a web page (probably my personal page) to archive them on. Be aware that some of the old links in the archives section may not work during this time. They will eventually be removed. This content is rarely looked at, and I need to clear some space on the web server.

5-19-2003 Atlanta Ladies Clean Up at AMBC On Sunday, May 18, four women from Atlanta swept the placings at the Stump Jump AMBC Race in Spartanburg SC. The 8 mile course saw a week of rain prior to the race and a heavy rainstorm during the race. Most of the course was mud several inches thick.

The Sobe-Cannondale Ladies Lisa Ropke and Karen Masson won the Senior Pro Women and Master Pro Women, respectively. After the first lap, Karen led Lisa by about a minute and a half, but Lisa rode hard through the rainstorm to cut Karen's lead to 30 seconds at the end of the 24 mile race.

In the Sport division, Rebecca Leeb (Reality Bikes) continued her winning streak in the Master's division. She beat the second place rider by nearly 10 minutes despite the thick mud. Covered in Tegaderm, Trish Albert (Team Peggy) won the Senior age group. The only comment Southeastern Cycling could get out of Trish was "My elbow hurts."

All 4 ladies were last seen talking about "earning their showers" after battling rain, thick mud, some more mud, a little more mud, and 57 degree temperatures. Photos coming soon.

Mt. Mitchell Mt. Mitchell was this weekend in Spartanburg, SC. I've heard that several people from Atlanta did really well and completed the century despite harsh weather. There have been no official results posted on the Spartanburg Freewheelers website. From what I understand, there are no official times kept.

SORBA-OMBA Update Construction continues at the Thomson Trails in Macon. The tool trailer will be at L.H. Thomson to improve the surface of the new trails and remove the off-camber turns. State RR and TT Championships The Georgia State Road Race and Time Trial Championships are May 24-25. Registration for the TT closes on Thursday. You MUST be preregistered to ride the time trial. See The Fulton Flyers webpage for detailed course maps and race information.

Cycleworks Rules in Birmingham The Cycleworks Cat. 4 team took home the GC at the Shelby (Birmingham, AL ) Stage Race this weekend.  Bryan Holloway took 6th in the time trial and was 2nd in the Road Race. Being only seconds out of first place going into the crit on Sunday, he knew that he had to do something drastic. He knew that the only way to make up time was to get a time bonus for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. Bryan blew away the competition to win the crit. Bryan credits the team with doing an "awesome job blocking."

5-21-2003 Shelby Stage Race-Pro/1/2 Greg App reports that the The Trek/VW/Freeflite team went to the Shelby Stage Race last weekend with a full, in form team. Greg App, Michael Wolf, Eddie Fagan, Creed Sewell, and Mark Kebbekus showed up motivated to "do it up" in the Pro/1/2 field. "Keb" won the GC with three other riders placing in the Top 20. Read more.

5-22-2003 Shelby County Stage Race-Cat. 4 Last weekend the Cycleworks team beat up on the boys from Alabama. "Big Hoss" Bryan Holloway battled it out with GC Cycling and Backyard Burgers to see who would win the GC in the Cat. 4 race. Backing him up was a fantastic team from the ATL. Read more.

Silver Comet News In Powder Springs, the bridge over US 278 is being constructed. The bridge will be erected around May 28th with construction scheduled to be completed by mid-September. Paved detours will be provided around the construction site. A new trailhead opened in Rockmart at the Nathan Dean Sports Complex. The trailhead has complete amenities including "real" bathrooms, picnic tables, and a large parking lot.

5-23-2003 AMBC at Ducktown Postponed   Dawn McKenzie (Cartecay Bikes), friends of the Bergers (promoters of the SERC), has said that sadly David Berger's father passed away. The Ducktown AMBC SERC that was supposed to happen this weekend has been postponed. Information should be posted on the Gone Riding site within a few days as to when the race will be rescheduled. Please call Gone Riding at 352-873-9279 to confirm. Southeastern Cycling sends it sympathies to the Bergers. They promote several of the largest race series in the region including the SERC and the Florida Series. I spoke with Gone Riding and have confirmed that the race has been postponed.

5-20-2003 Stump Jump I put up my report from the Stump Jump race this weekend.

East Point Grand Prix The East Point Grand Prix #2 will be June 21. The official flier is now available. There are some changes from the last race. 1) As during the last GP race, feel free to drive inside to unload (as long as you arrive by 6pm), but please park outside.
2) All cat 3-track/3-road licensees now race in Pro-Am field (for next two GP's).
3) We have added yet another race for Women! 4) Cat 2-road riders with only Track-4 category can now race in GP (with Amateur field). But please try to upgrade to Track-3 prior to next GP so you can race in your proper "fitness" level - don't be a sandbagger!
5) In order to lower officials' fees (time constraints), we've made the schedule a little tighter and took out unnecessary intermissions. This shouldn't be a problem, but please be ready to ride on time for each race. 6) If you plan on doing the Union City races, you may want to pre-register (before June 13!) if you'll be arriving at last minute. We'll make sure to
have a # waiting. If you still have questions (after looking over the race announcement),
call me at: 404-522-2912, or email me at: otrp@mindspring.com Mike Hoffland

BUMP N GRIND Info. For anyone going to Bump N Grind in Alabama this coming weekend, here is some info. from the race director. Pre-registration pick up will be at Cahaba Cycles Oak Mountain Location from 5-7 pm on Friday and from 3-7 pm at the race site/Oak Mountain on Saturday. Registration for late entries will also be available at those times. "Last Saturday a drastic change was made at Blood Rock. We placed numerous large stones (several hundreds of pounds each) that took the line of years ago. It now snakes around a bit, and is not a straight shot. It is more stable, slower, and can be a bit more intimidating.
We did this to remove water from that section of the course and preserve the recent stone work. It is now dry on the riding area. It features a 12 inch drop over a 12 inch gap for the
water channel. This channel may be closed up race day, but we are still draining water. Please respect the hours and tons of rock we moved (by hand) and avoid alterations. Then a turn on a large rock with a angled drop that is the most technical part. It then runs out onto a huge rock for the final drop. It is rideable, but be prepared and look at it closely. There is a possible
mandatory dismount for beginners. We will see if the NORBA rep thinks it will be
necessary."

Women's Only MTB Ride On June 21, there will be a women's only mountain bike ride at Yellow River. The goal of the ride is to make women feel more comfortable on their mountain bikes in a non-intimidating environment. Email Sherri Hall for more information.

Saul Raisin in Europe The US National Under 23 team is a roll in  the Ronde D'I'lsard stage race on May 23. American Patrick McCarty soloed to a win in the second state, taking the leader's jersey from teammate Michael Creed, USA Cycling reported. Saul Raisin (Dalton, GA) also had a huge ride, bridging an enormous gap between the peloton and lead
break, eventually finishing fourth in the stage. The race continued Saturday and Sunday with two mountain stages.

5-29-2003 Volunteers for YMCA Camp SORBA-Woodstock is looking for volunteers to help with YMCA bike camps  June 2-6, 23-27, July 7-11, and 21-25. "The camp program is M - F and based at the YMCA facility off Bells Ferry Road. There will be 12 campers ages 11 to 13 each of the four sessions. A Y staff counselor will be responsible for the group each day. They will spend the morning each day in MT biking activities, with
the afternoon for Swimming, arts and crafts and other camp activities. Most likely the counselor will have limited biking skills, so the assistance of Woodstock Sorba will be very important to the success of the program. The camp will use the trails at the Y as well as making trips to Blankets Creek on Wednesday and Friday. We will need the volunteers from 9:30 AM to about 12:30 each day, especially on the blankets Creek days." Email John Hicks for more information or if you would like to volunteer.

Gwinnett BUG Message from: Nancy & Matthew Stovall, "You may not know that the Gwinnett Bicycle User Group (BUG) Leadership has transitioned from Jim Sandlin to us, Matthew and Nancy Stovall. Jim will still be doing advocacy work for the BUG, but his schedule doesn't currently allow him time for other BUG duties. We thank Jim for his past

6-4-2003 Union City Race The info. for the Mayor's Union City Omnium June 21-22 is up at Georgia Velo's site. Ladies and Gentleman take note of the BIG payouts that go pretty deep. I'll be there!

Tuesday Night Crit The Tuesday night crit was very small last night. Where was everyone? A little rain scare ya away? Other than a few drops in the middle of the crit, the rain held off. The crit was fast and furious as the pack got strung out single file by lap 2. By the end, less than 20 people remained with the rest of us content to watch the finish. With 3 to go, Brad from Cycleworks and two other riders went off the front. With Chance Regina and Shawn Flemming (Cycleworks) blocking, it was up to John Murphy (Krystal) and the other guys to bring the break back in. Caught with one to go, the break sat up. The final sprint came down between a few guys with Creed Sewell (Trek-Freeflite-VW) taking the win.

Tim Henry is Back! Tim Henry, a professional rider with West Virginia, is from Roswell, GA. This week is participating in the Lancaster and Trenton races during US Pro week. Tim checks in with a wet, cold report from Lancaster.

Lancaster is that start of the fastest week of racing in the US. I got my first taste of really being a pro because we had a team mechanic, manager, and soigneur. Everything was taken care of and all I had to do was race my bike. Living the bike racers dream is pretty cool. This race is notoriously the toughest of the entire week. The course is a 7 mile loop with four climbs, one quite steep through a park. The start is in downtown Lancaster and it winds through the town with lots of tight turns and bumpy roads. We were doing 13 laps for a total of 91 miles. The field was also a bit intimidating with every domestic pro team (except for Healthnet) and several euro teams in attendance. To make matters worse, the weather could not have been much worse. It was raining all day and the temperature at the start was 57 degrees. Hard to believe it was June... The start was very fast and I tried to move up because I started at the very back. The whole thing was like an assault on my senses. Then, in the first mile of the race I hit a pothole that knocked my rear wheel horribly out of true. I loosened my brake and the wheel was still rolling so I kept going. We then hit the first hill into the park. This hill was pretty tough. It was about 1k from the bottom to the very top with one short downhill in the middle. It was not so bad at first. I even managed to big ring the whole thing. After that climb we descended onto a flat road and stepped it up to about 35 mph. The field strungout for the next three climbs and the pace never let up. Through the start/finish I tried to rest but had to move up at the same time. When we hit the climb through the park the second time it was twice as bad.  I passed several big names over the top including Chann McRae and Freddy Rodriguez so I thought I was doing well. This just about put me over the limit but I moved back into the middle of the group on the descent. When we hit the flat road the pack strung out and accellerated up to 35 again and that was it for me. I could not close the gap and shook my elbow for the guy behind to pass me. This is where McRae and Rodriguez showed why they are both US National Champions because they closed the gap easily. I moved to the back of the pack and got popped on the next climb. I did not feel too bad about it because I saw Jeff Hopkins and Cesar Grajales of Jittery Joe's and Kenny Labbae of US Postal drop off as well. When I got back to the car I saw three other teammates so I know it was a fast race. In the end only about 25 riders finished and Jakob Piil of CSC won. It was probably not even cold for him. Scottie was the last of the team to drop out and he did so only to avoid getting sick. He is feeling strong and wants a good ride at Philly so that is all that matters. Trenton is on Thursday and that is supposed to be super fast.  There is only one small hill on that course though.  That is about all for now, thanks for reading.

6-5-2003 Le Tour du Grand Montreal In addition to Wachovia week, the ladies are racing Le Tour du Grand Montreal in Canada. Atlanta based Genesis sent a team up. Cyclingnews.com has coverage of the race. For photos, see Candice Blickem in action. Sue Palmar-Komar wore the 30+ jersey. The ladies will next race the Liberty Classic in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Roswell's Leigh Valletti and Atlanta's Clara Constantinescu will support the Fulton Flyer's leaders Iona Wynter (Atlanta), Candice Blickem (NC), and Sue Palmer Komar (Canada). Good luck Ladies!!

6-9-2003 Silver Comet Altitude Profile Someone has created an altitude profile of the Silver Comet. There are hills...sort of.

Tour De Georgia Tidbit Here is an interesting Tidbit about the equipment the pro teams used n the TdG (Tour De Georgia). The following were on Michelin tires: first, second, and
third place overall, the Sprinter's, Climber's, and Young Rider jerseys, and the first team in the GC. Ok, so a lot of those are Saturn riders. Saturn rides Michelins.

Tim Races Trenton Tim Henry, a pro with Division III team West Virginia, checks in with his Trenton, NJ race report.

Trenton is the second race of US Pro week. It is a 14 lap race held on a 6.5 mile circuit for a total of 91 miles. The course is almost completely flat except for one big ring hill through a park. The course is one long straightaway with crit-type loops on each end. Trenton is also know for very high average speeds, usually over 30 mph. We started off the trip from our hotel ten minutes late and then got lost on the way to the course so we arrived thirty minutes before the start. The worst part was that I was not in the car that my bike was on and we got separated to I had to get dressed and walk around looking for my bike. When I found it I had twenty minutes until the start. As I rolled to sign-in they called us to the line. This was great because I was going to have to start one of the fastest races in the country with no warm up. Mercifully, the pace was not bad for the first few laps. I also had good legs that day. I started out in the middle of the pack and I was comfortable. At one point I moved up to the top twenty and realized how much easier it was up there. This was fine until the pack bunched up and I drifted to the back where I would remain. The race did not start to get really fast until we got about halfway. And then the only really hard parts were the descent out of the park where I sprinted full tilt in my 54x11 to keep up and the turns onto the straightaway on both sides. The roads through Trenton are very rough in places and this made the difficult parts even worse. With four laps to go I was getting tired and many thanks to my teammate Wes Siegler for the
moral support that kept me going. With two to go, as CSC came to the front to chase down the only serious break of the day, a Webcor rider two spots in front of me popped and I could not match the jump of the riders in front of me who closed the gap. Less than half the field finished so I think I did pretty well. Julian Dean of CSC easily took the sprint from Oleg
Grishkine of Navigagors and Viktor Ripinski of Saturn. I was not selected to do Philly on Sunday so this is my last night in town. I am looking forward to heading home and hitting some local races soon. Thanks for reading, Tim

It's Never Too Early to Think About Cyclocross It's only 4 months away...the start of Cyclocross season. The Georgia Cyclocross Series website is up! There are several rule changes. The categories hhave expanded the categories to include a separate Cat 3 & 4 / NORBA Sport races and overall series winner. A Group D formed  with NORBA Beginner, USCF Cat 5, U18 (Cat 4,5 only) & Women. The women will have a staggered start within Group D which is designed to give the Women a separate race. The Verge Points Leader jersey will continue in 2003, and State Championship jerseys will be presented to the 2003 winners. Scoring will go 10 deep in each category. All U18 riders with a Category 1,2 or NORBA Expert License must race with Group A except the State Championship race.
All U18 riders with a Category 3/4 or NORBA Sport License must race with Group C except the State Championship race. Only series points will count towards “The Bike Shop” Team Championship. We will not award single points to racers that finish outside the top 10. See the rules page for complete rule changes. The final schedule will be released in September.

Velodrome News The Bicycle Little League started at the DLV on June 2. The next Grand Prix is on June 21. The complete schedule is up at the DLV website. The restaurants of East Point will again be present selling great food (and rumor has it maybe beer, too!).  June 28-29 will be the regional track championships.

Velodrome Benefit Auction EPX Bicycles has generously donated a full Dura Ace EPX 303 road bike to the DLV. It's up on Ebay now! Auction ends June 13.

Liberty Classic Tina Mayolo Pic (Diet Rite) was the highest placed Atlantan in Sunday's Liberty Classic in Philadelphia with a 9th place. Leigh Valetti (FFCC) was 27th and Shannon Hutchinson (Cola Vita Bolla) was 47th at 9 seconds back from the winner Lynn Bessette (Saturn). Esther Davis was 81st.

6-10-2003 US Pro Championship Jittery Joe's, the Athens based UCI Division III team, competed last weekend at the US Pro Championship. Here is a report from their website on how Australian Jeff Hopkins celebrated. "On to Philly. All 7 riders started the 156 mile race, even the sick folks. The plan was to protect Jonny, Jesse and Cesar--the rest would help out in any way they could and try for the early move. All domestic teams were there at full steam, and numerous Euro teams were there as well including CSC, Saeco, Vini-Caldirola, Formaggi Pinzolo, Flanders Iteamnova and MROZ. A break formed early--like in many year's past. This time it was only 4 riders. However, it was a strong break with Saturn, CSC, Navigators and Prime Alliance so it stayed away for over 100 miles. They must have worked out a deal, because Trent Klasna from Saturn was first over the KOM's all day with the other riders in the same order every time. It was a fairly chill race until the break was caught at mile 115. Our big highlight of the day came mid-race when a $1,500 prime was up for grabs to the field. Jeff got a great run at it, and took the sprint. Not bad considering the field. He immediately quit the race and headed to the party at Manyunk for a beer."

Liberty Classic Photos The Daily Peloton has over 100 photos of the Libery Classic up including some of the ladies from Atlanta.

New Recovery Ride There is a new OTP (Outside the Perimeter) recovery ride starting at the Marietta Cycleworks store on Mondays at 6:30. It is promised to be an 18 mile "no drop" ride that is mostly flat with a few, short hills. Maps are available.

Chance Regina (Cycleworks) takes the sprint in the Cat. 4 crit at the Shelby County Stage Race

Ride Review-Cycleworks Recovery Ride In the first ride review of the year, I visited the Cycleworks Boyz on June 2 for their Monday night recovery ride. They ride out of the Cycleworks store on Johnson Ferry Rd. in Marietta about 2 miles north of Columns Drive every Monday at 6:30. Chance Regina, team captain, promised me a 17 mile flattish recovery ride with a few steep hills. He said that no one would get dropped, that everyone would have someone to ride with, and that beginners were encouraged to come. Eric May, winner of the Roswell Cat. 4/5 crit, devised the route which goes through East Cobb, crosses into Fulton County by Sope Creek, and back through East Cobb. The roads had a moderate amount of traffic with several neighborhood roads having no cars on them. The traffic was consistent with the other recovery ride in the city on Mondays. Many of the roads over the first 3/4 of the ride are flat to downhill. One tricky turn on Paper Mill Rd. requires a significant slow down because it is so tight. The last 1/4 of the ride has several steep but short uphills, including one of the Club Drive climbs out of Columns Drive. Having raced in Birmingham yesterday, I was very tired. Once or twice on the hills, I dropped back from the guys. True to their word, one or two of them dropped back with me until we caught the group. The group was smaller than other Monday rides, friendly towards the other cyclists we saw passing us, and obeyed the traffic signals. I had fun and would recommend this ride to others. Average speeds are 16-17 mph on rolling to hilly roads.

Southeastern Cycling Coverage Southeastern Cycling will not be updated June 12-16 as we are off to West Virginia for the NORBA National. Don't bother Michael, he won't be doing any updates either.....

6-16-2003  IMBA Needs Your Help in Georgia! IMBA ACTION ALERT: WRITE NOW TO PROTECT RIDING IN SOUTHEASTERN NATIONAL FORESTS The U.S. Forest Service has released draft management plans for five national forests in the southeastern United States and the outcomes for bicycling are mixed. In Kentucky and Virginia, the agencies remain positive toward mountain bicycling. But in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia, the Forest Service has proposed to severely restrict bicycling by adopting a "closed unless opened" policy for all trails. Further, in the same forest, Wilderness proponents are working to close an important bike trail north of Atlanta.

Every American has a right to comment on these public lands. IMBA encourages you to write to the Forest Service by July 3, 2003, regardless of where you live.

IF YOU WRITE ONE LETTER
Please help protect access to southeastern trails by writing the Chattahoochee National Forest. Your letter should ask the agency to reverse its proposed policy on bicycling and to reaffirm its support for making the Mountaintown Creek roadless area (north of Ellijay, Georgia) a "Remote Backcountry Recreation Area" rather than designating it a Wilderness area. This will protect the land but allow continued mountain bike access, which Wilderness prohibits.

The proposed policy states, "Trails are closed to bicycle use unless otherwise designated." This language would close many routes now open to bicycling. It would require the Forest Service to spend time and money to identify suitable bicycling trails. Since the agency is under severe
financial restraints, it's unlikely that the proper research and studies would proceed in the foreseeable future. IMBA believes that national forest trails should be open to bicycling, unless
there are specific, solid reasons to close them. IMBA believes that closing trails due to user conflict should be the last course of action, after an agency takes proactive measures such as user education, incorporating mountain bike patrols, or asking trail users to alternate days. Closures for reasons of wildlife, vegetation and trail damage are not legitimate because
bicycling and hiking cause roughly equal impacts and should be treated the same.

Rumors? Rumor has it that Atlanta Cycling closed their Sandy Springs and Buckhead stores. Has anyone heard about this? If so, it's the second such closing in a few weeks. Happy Trails in Woodstock is closing as the owner concentrates on his other business ventures. (Yes, Virginia--er...Atlanta--they are having a big sale.)

Snowshoe Pictures I put the pictures from Snowshoe up last night. Lots from the Pro Men's and Women's XC races. It was really muddy!

The damage to Trish's bike after West Virginia

Damage I'm happy to say that my bike is repairable! Matt at Boneshakers has Toast (my bike) in his care this week. Parts are on order, the hanger is straightened. I might be back riding by the weekend. Yes, the chain is rusted out! The mud was horrible, and the bike got wet on top of the car in rain on the way home.

This Weekend Don't forget that this weekend is the Union City Mayor's Race. It looks like the fields are going to be big. This is one of the only close road races to Atlanta. Also, the second East Point Grand Prix will be taking place at the Dick Lane Velodrome. Spectators are $5/individual or $10 for the whole family. Once again, the great restaurants from East Point will be on hand to serve up good food.

6-18-2003 Ducktown Rescheduled Gone Riding has rescheduled the Ducktown AMBC SERC race for August 10. The race was supposed to be held in May but was postponed.

Trail Closures at Bull Mountain SORBA is reporting that Bull Mountain trails are closed temporarily because of recent heavy rainfall.  They are expected to be back open shortly. Check with the Forest Service for the latest updates.

Yellow River Closed I think for the first time in history, Yellow River is closed. Mark Patterson from Gwinnett Parks and SORBA sent out a notice this morning. For up to date information contact the Gwinnett Outdoor Recreation Staff at 770-932-4460.

Gainesville College Closed The Gainesville College trails will be closed all day Sat., June 21.

6-19-2003 New Recovery Ride The Bicycle Link is picking up where the (now closed) Atlanta Cycling left off. They will be hosting a recovery ride on Monday, June 23. The Bicycle Link owner, Erik, has told me that it will closely follow the old Monday night route. The Bicycle Link is located in Buckhead on Pharr Rd.

YMCA Bike Camp SORBA Woodstock is looking for Bike Camp volunteers. "Our next week of of bike camp starts Monday and we need volunteers. We had great help with the first week. thanks to all who helped, especially Tucker who made it every day. Several of you have indicated that you can help. Please consider taking a morning off and giving some kids a hand learning to bike. Dates : June 23-27, July 7-11, 21-25. The camp program is M - F and based at the YMCA facility off Bells Ferry Road. There will be 12 campers ages 11 to 13 each of the four sessions. A Y staff counselor will be responsible for the group each day. They will spend the morning each day in MT biking activities, with the afternoon for Swimming, arts and crafts and other camp activities. Most likely the counselor will have limited biking skills, so the
assistance of Woodstock Sorba will be very important to the success of the program. The camp will use the trails at the Y as well as making trips to Blankets Creek on Wednesday and Friday. We will need the volunteers from 9:30 AM to about 12:30 each day, especially on the
Blankets Creek days. This is a great opportunity to help kids get involved and excited about
mouton biking. Sorba volunteers are a key to the success of this program. It is very difficult to do the rides at blankets with out plenty of extra supervision. On Blankets Creek days you can meet us at the trail. If you would like to volunteer please contact John Hicks. Jdhicks3@comcast.net.

On-Line Registration Open Again for Union City The online registration for the Union City Omnium is open again until Friday at 1 pm for anyone that missed the earlier deadline. You must be preregistered to race the time trial, but onsite registration will be available for the crit and RR.

6-20-2003 Women's Ride Postponed The Women's mtb ride that was supposed to take place tomorrow has been postponed until Sat., June 28 at 10:30. It will be held at Blanket's Creek. email Sherri Hall at events@sorba.org for more information.

Charlotte 12 Hour Race Postpone "Due to the tremendous amount of rainfall in the Charlotte area with more on the way this afternoon we have decided to postpone the Summer

The rescheduled will go off rain or shine!"  "Registration is still open and may be mailed in, dropped off at SouthPark Cycles or done electronically
http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1069236 For those of you folks who will not be able to make the new race date. We will offer a full refund, however this event is for charity and is tax deductible. For those registered riders who are not refunded the

Track Grand Prix Don't forget about the East Point Grand Prix #2 Saturday night at the Dick Lane Velodrome! The action will be fast and furious! $5 gets you in or $10 for the whole family. The Chicken somethingorother restaurant will be there serving up Mexican food.

IMBA Call to Action There's been an outcry lately against the possible closing of Mountaintown in North Georgia. This is one of the last backcountry trails to mountain bike in North Georgia. Personally, this is my all time favorite trail to ride! 7 mile downhill with technical sections and creek crossings...pretty plants, hearing nothing but the water run. What more can you ask for? All it takes is a short letter to the US Forest Service to let them know you want Mountaintown to remain open to mountain bikers. If you want a template, email me, and I'll send you the one I created. Print it out, and mail it!

Tour of Ohio Proving that downtime at work can be productive, I scooted on over to Cyclingnews.com to look at some pictures. You never know what you will find. John Murphy (Krystal) from Atlanta. took 2nd place at the third stage of the Tour of Ohio June 15. John was in a break away most of the race with Frank Travisio (Aerospace Engineering) and Brian Sheedy (West Virginia). Travisio out sprinted his two breakaway companions for the win. Dahlonega resident Josh Seldman (Krystal) was 11th, and young Michael Wolf (Trek-VW-Freeflite) was 10th. Other Georgia riders participating in the Tour of Ohio June 13-21 include Anthony Marinelli (Genesis Scuba / FFCC). Both John and Michael have scored several Top 10 results including a win by John in the June 19 stage. What a super effort for these Under 23 riders!

Ryder Hejedal (Gary Fisher-Subaru) crosses the line to win the Pro Men's XC race at the NORBA NCS #2 in West Virginia.

6-23-2003 The Weekend There was a lot going on this weekend! I will get reports and such up as I get them. If any of you APB guys are out there, I want a report from the Cat. 4 crit on Sat! APB and Cycleworks put in a great team efforts! I will also have some pictures in the next day or two from the women's races. Thanks Jeff for taking pictures with my camera while I was racing!

Cartersville Century This Sat. is the Cartersville Century. Traditionally, this is one of the
largest centuries in metro Atlanta. I was up at Barnsley Gardens in Adairsville riding with a group of friends on Sunday (lovely resort!). When we were on the road, I saw some century directional arrows. I saw a few that said "CC," and the traditional Cartersville markings. If this was the route, the roads are SO nice! The ones we were on were country rolling roads rivaling anything across I-75 in White, GA. Could this be the next hidden riding gem??

NORBA NCS Mt. Snow, VT For a first time in a long, long time a Southerner was on the podium at a NORBA National. Willow Koerber (RLX) rode to fourth place Saturday at the NORBA NCS #3 race in Vermont. Willow and her boyfriend ChrisShephard (Haro-Lee Dungarees) live in Asheville, NC.

Union City Omnium The Union City Omnium was held this weekend in Union City, GA, about 10 minutes Outside the Perimeter. Large fields were present in all categories because of the close proximity to Atlanta. Most of the local teams were out in force. In the Cat. 4 division, Cycleworks and APB battled for honors. With what seemed like a perfect leadout train in the crit, the Cycleworks team swarmed to the front with two laps to go.  A rider from Athens came around for the win followed by Charles Rossingol from APB. In Sunday's road race, both teams worked hard for their riders including pulling Matt Swaim (APB) and Shawn Flemming back from flats early in the race. Clint Tomassino (APB) was third, Shawn was about 18th, and Mitch Askew (Boneshakers) stayed with the pack and finished as well. In the Cat. 3 division, it was all about Russ Griebel (Kalahari). With great team work, Russ took the wins in the crit. and road race. Something tells me we will see Russ up in the 1/2's soon! In the Men's Pro/1/2, the Trek-VW Southeastern Regional team was all over the front of the pack. In the crit, Mark Kebbekus went off the front with three to go. No one could catch him until teammate Creed Sewell bridged up in an attempt to keep the hard charging peloton from catching him. As Mark crossed the line for the win, Creed pointed to him "you the man....you the man!" In Women's action, the 1/2/3 division was a battle between current National Criterium champion Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) and Candice Blickem (Genesis). Candice broke away within the first few laps of the crit and gained nearly 3/4 lap on the field. Pic was content to sit in the pack until the last lap, when she passed a Fuji rider for second place. In the RR, it was Pic that took the field sprint from Blickem. The Women's 4 division saw the Velo Bellas taking on several local teams. At the crit Ann (Reality Bikes) took the win over Kerry Meyers (Peachtree Bikes) after staying away the last lap. Kerry was victorious in the RR.

East Point Grand Prix #2 The East Point Grand Prix #2 was Saturday night at the Dick Lane Velodrome. In the amateur races, a crash took out over half of the field early on. There were reports that one rider was taken to the hospital with a broken collarbone. Thankfully, no one else was seriously hurt except for a brand new Zip disk wheel (RIP Matthew's new wheel). The amateur sprint finals were won by Daniel (Big Foot Racing). Daniel says that he is moving up to the A group starting this Wednesday. In Pro/Am racing, Tony Scott, Steve Hogan, and several other riders battled for first.

Monday Night Recovery Rides There are three new recovery rides Monday night. The Atlanta Cycling ride moves to the Vinings store and leaves at 6:30. The route will be the same as the old ride. The Bicycle Link ride starts at 6:30 at the store. The Boneshakers team also has a recovery ride for those on the West side of town leaving Boneshaker Bicycles at 5:30.

6-24-2003 Covington Century The Covington Century is on Sunday, August 3rd starting at Project Adventure. Download the form with directions and all the info. here

6-30-2003 Fitchburg Overall The final standings for the Fitchburg stage race are in. From the Genesis team, the following riders placed in the Pro/1/2 women: Jennifer Green 30th, Kim Sawyer (guest rider) 33rd, and Leigh Valletti 49th. Shannon Hutchinson was 29th. Kim Foland (Genesis) was 19th in the Women's Cat. 3. Kim had a strong ride all week culminating with a third place in the final road race. Way to go ladies! Anthony Marinelli (Genesis) finished 11th overall in the Juniors. Cyclingnews.com has complete coverage with full results and reports.

Dirty Roadies/Summer Sizzler I decided to do the Summer Sizzler at the Ag Center race Sunday after being persuaded by fellow Team Peggy member Kristy (yes, there are two of us in the ATL!) to do it.  I was wandering around when to my surprise, I saw two Genesis riders. Wow! They weren't afraid to get their nice, white uniforms dirty! (big ole grin!) Dan Coy continued his winning ways and showed the mountain bikers what a time trial specialist can do when he won his Sport age group. Unfortunately, I don't know who the Junior was. Lisa Ropke (Sobe Cannondale) won the Pro/Expert women's division. I think Thomas Turner (Sobe Cannodale) won the Expert Senior men. Benji Coil (Peachtree Bikes), Bob Cagle (Boneshakers-Air Conditioning), and Chris Wiley (Sobe Cannondale) were in the
Top 6. Kathleen Tokuda (unattached) won the Master Women's Sport class with Kim
Miller (unattached) coming in second. I took 3rd in my first outting in Super Sport behind two guys including David Smith (Bicycle Outfitters). The APB boys, Cycleworks, Oconee Outfitters, and the usual teams all had large crews out. The course was in great condition thanks to SORBA Gainesville. A short new section was added. Although it was wet, it will be fast like the rest of the course when it cures.

Cartersville Century The Cartersville Century was on Saturday. Several hundred riders showed up. Some of the girls and and I decided to do the 55 miler while the boyz did the century option. RBM, Boneshakers, Cycleworks, and a couple of triathletes were on hand to see how fast they could do 100 miles. About 50 miles in, 3 riders attacked and were never seen again. The rest of the field of about 25 riders averaged 22-23 mph to finish in 4 hours, 21 minutes. The Cartersville course has totally changed from in the past. No longer does it use part of the "Acworth" loop and go south towards Kennesaw. It now heads north into rural Bartow County near Barnsley Gardens and slightly east. The roads were really nice and had very little traffic.

7-1-2003 Happy Tuesday Happy Rainy, Nasty Tuesday. At least it is my night off to go get a massage although no one will probably be at the crit or Lethal Injection tonight. When will Bill pass us finally? Maybe the Weather Channel can tell??

US 10/100K Classic Labor Day weekend always brings the 100K Cycling Classic, a Pro/1/2 Men's event in Cobb county. At Publix last night, I picked up a brochure for this year's event. I noticed that there was a 10K Women's Cycling Spring for "USCF licensed cyclists only." Does this mean that anyone (Cat. 1/2/3/4) can enter? The prize purse is $10,000 sponsored by T-Mobile. The race is promoted by FEI Velo.

Tennessee State TT Championships Two Georgia riders contested the Tennessee State TT Championships this past weekend. Kevin Richardson (River City) was 9th in the Master Men 35-39, and Kevin White (GC Cycling) was second in the Master Men 40-44. Good job guys!

7-2-2003 NEWNAN CANCELLED The Maxxis series race at Newnan this weekend has been cancelled because of the excessive rain this week. From Terry Hinton:
"I am sorry to inform everyone that the Newnan, GA race set for July 5-6 has been cancelled due to the repetitive rain showers in the area. The Knoxville Dirt Classic will race as scheduled on July 19-20. Terry Hinton, ACS Race Promotions, 423-360-3661."

7-2-2003 Lula Lake Brow Beater 12 Hour Race  The Lula Lake Brow Beater 12 Hour race will be Sept. 27 at the Lula Lake Land Trust. This is a great prep event for the 24 Hours of Adrenalin in October.

Georgia Games Schedule & Venue Change The Georgia Games road cycling events have had several changes. All of Saturday's time trials will be held at 5:30 in Brooks. The crit originally scheduled to be held in downtown Griffen has been moved to the Griffen-Spaulding Industrial Park, the same venue where the Brooks crit was held in March. The latest flyer is here

7-3-2003 Happy Fourth of July! Southeastern Cycling is taking the Fourth of July weekend off from updating the web page. I will be busy riding, relaxing (and trying to get over the flu...thank you for the wonderful gift you-know-who-you-are), and hanging out with the "peeps." Also, if updates may be a day or so apart in June. My fun 80 hour work weeks start again June 14 for about 3 weeks. Pardon me while I try to train and do my website through all of it. (not fun!). See ya Monday.

John Floyd Update Ellen B., John's mom, sent out and update and gave me permission to post a little info. John survived the school year and is looking forward to 10th grade. Watch out-Get off the road! John got his driver's license. Of course, the only reason he wanted his license was so that he could drive to the rides with his bike. John also went to Colorado in June for a disabled cycling camp at the US Olympic Center. He was amazed by the athletes and coaches.

John Floyd trains in Colorado

Bull Mountain Closed Just in time for the holidays! Bull Mountain, Jake, and Whissenhunt trails are closed. They are expected to remain closed through the holidays.

Thanks! Over the last few weeks, a bunch of people have told me how much they are enjoying Southeastern Cycling. Thanks guys! It means a lot to know that people are actually reading my drivel. (ok now APB...I know you guys and gals are reading this....I want race reports!). Speaking of race reports, I need race reports and photos! I can't do it all by myself, especially this coming month. I'll be lucky to ride let alone get to too many races. Email me with anything and everything you want posted. Thanks as always to regulars Mary, Mitch, Bryan, Greg, and Tim.

IMPORTANT CHANGE!! You can now type in www.southeasterncycling.com and come straight to the cycling page!! Finally, I got around to making the change.

East Point Grand Prix Coverage The DLV website has coverage and pictures of the East Point Grand Prix #2 up.

Sprint Tournament There will be a Sprint Tournament Friday night at the velodrome in July and August. Check out the flyer!

Fred Rodruigez One of my photos made the Freddy Rodruigez interview on cyclingnews.com. Cool!

July 4th Cartecay Ride More than 40 people showed up for Cartecay Bikes ride on July 4th. About half rode from the shop to the Bear Creek (50 miles)  and half met at the trailhead for the 25 mile ride. Afterwards, a BBQ lunch was enjoyed be all.

Tour De Signal Team Peggy would like to thank all of the Chattanooga area riders that came out to support the Tour De Signal! Everyone had a great time, and the weather was fantastic. Thanks to our volunteers as well.

Silver Comet Century Ever wanted to do a century on the Silver Comet? The annual, unofficial Silver Comet Century will be Saturday, July 12. It will start at 8 am at the Mavell Rd. Trailhead. The route will take riders to Rockmart on the Comet and will then head off of the Comet for a small loop before getting back on the Comet for the return trip. There is no entry fee, and the ride is unsupported. There are plenty of parking lots and water fountains along the way to refill, but be prepared. Several race teams are planning on sending riders out, so there will be hammerheads to ride with. For more details see the forums.

7-8-2003 Charlotte Cycling The make up dates for the Charlotte Mountain Bike series have been announced. The first is at Catawba on Sat, July 13 at 2 pm, and the second is July 20th at Renaissance Park at 2 pm.

Women's Ride The July Women's Ride will be July 27th at the Chicopee Ag Center. Meet in the parking lot at 10:30. Email Sherri for more info.

Race Dates Switched From Bruce Burton: "We have swapped dates with the Barnesville, GA race and will now be running the GA State Crit Championships on September 20th (the race was listed for Sept. 13th) at Johns Creek in Duluth, GA.

AMBC Race Moved The August SERC race appears to have been moved from Helen to Jackson, GA, possibly the Dausett trails according to the promoter's website.

Tour De France Well, Atlantans are heading to the Tour De France in droves. The Atlanta Cycling group is heading over next week, and I know plenty of people that are already in Europe watching the world's greatest bicycle race. It's been an exciting few days with the Aussie's racking up jerseys and crashes. Tyler Hamilton (CSC) is one tough cookie for sticking it out with a broken collarbone. If you have a few spare moments, drop him a note in the guestbook on his webpage. Tyler is humble, gracious, a great bike rider, and a true professional. One of these years it will come together for him, and he will make the Tour podium. Being the first week, Lance is safely finishing in the bunch. My favorite Tour De France coverage links: Cyclingnews.com, Velonews.com, Le Tour's Official Website (with video clips!), and Daily Peloton.

7-9-2003 Tour De France News From Letour.fr: Eight Posties Lead Overall Classification The overall classification is dominated by the champions of today's team time trial, the US Postal Service - Berry Floor formation. Eight of their riders are at the top of the overall classification. They are: 1. Victor Hugo Pena, 2. Lance Armstrong, 3. Viatcheslav Ekimov, 4. George Hincapie, 5. Jose Luis Rubiera, 6. Roberto Heras, 7. Pavel Padrnos,
8. Floyd Landis. Then comes the leader of the ONCE-Eroski team, Joseba Beloki in ninth place."

Sad Cross News James Tomko, promoter of the Georgia Cross series, has announced that Telenational and Verge have pulled their sponsorship of the Georgia cross series. The races will likely go on, but the overall will be "more for glory than prize money." Email your support to James! I know that I will be out there no matter what. I have to race my shiny new cross bike that is on order.

Giro D'Italia Femminile (Women's Giro D'Italia) Tina Mayolo-Pic is racing in her first Giro D'Italia Femminile with the Danish Team Sats. In the fourth stage on July 8, she made the decisive break with Regina Schleicher (Chirio) and Australian Amy Safe (Bik/Powerplate). Tina was second in the sprint. Tina is currently 37th on the GC. Oh Baby! New Bike! My new Cyclocross bike is on the way...oh yeah! I should have it built up within about 2 weeks. Details and pictures to follow! Yeah!

7-10-2003 Fox 5 News Story About Bikes Since I do not have OLN, I usually watch the news at 10. Fox 5 news (www.fox5atlanta.com) had a story on the 10 pm newscast about
the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the board that is creating the regional transportation plan. The report mentioned the death of a 17 year old boy on a bicycle and, the reporter focused on alternative transportation such as "bike lanes for cyclists and more sidewalks for pedestrians." Public transit was also mentioned. Two commuter/recreational cyclists were interviewed and said that cycling on the streets of Atlanta was dangerous. Helmets and staying two car lengths away from cars were given as safety for cyclists. Car drivers must be alert for bicycles and know that bicycles have the same rights as cars and are legally allowed to take up the entire lane. "It all boils down to courtesy." I thought the news story was balanced and fair towards cyclists and drivers. There is a debate within the advocacy world about creating bike lanes to make traveling safe or to educate drivers and not build bike lanes. I've heard both
sides in Atlanta

Junior World's Team Superweek July 11-27 will host the final three events for the selection of the Junior world's team. Two Atlanta riders are in the top 8. Zach Taylor (Genesis) is in 6th with 112 points, and Michael Wolf (Trek/VW/Freeflite) is in 8th with 105. Zach recently won his age group national time trial championship. The top two riders in the standings
automatically qualify, and an additional three may be chosen.

Bull Mountain Reopened According to SORBA, the Bull Mountain trails have been reopened after being closed for nearly a week because of wet conditions.

All 3 Sports Moves to New Location Everyone's favorite Trigeek shop, All 3 Sports, has moved to a new location. They are having an open house this Saturday from 10 am - 6 pm with vendors and a moonwalk for the kids . Northbound on GA 400: Exit 6 (Northridge). Go right onto Northridge and turn right at the first light, Dunwoody Place. Proceed to second traffic light and turn right onto Roberts Drive. Take an immediate left into the Northridge Business Park. They around back.

A Lady's Perspective on the Tour I could not resist posting this link at the Daily Peleton. Ok guys, time for a lady's perspective on the um, better sites of the Tour.

7-11-2003 NARC Website The North Atlanta Racing Club (NARC) has a new website with club information and news.

7-14-2003 Georgia Games The Georgia Games was this weekend in Brooks and Griffen, GA. Despite some snafus with the crit (start times changing), the promoter did a reasonable job with only two weeks to organize the race. She worked out deals with those that missed their crit start times. Turn out was rather light as it usually is for the Georgia Games. The Nalley Ladies were in force for the Women's 1/2/3 RR with three of the teammates taking the medals. Donna Kerby (C4) won the 1/2/3 Women's Time Trial and crit. In the crit, Trish Albert (Boneshakers) was 2nd although she took the win in the field sprint. In Women's Cat. 4 action, super time trialist Erin Christman won the gold. Lisa Safstrom (Velo Bella) won the crit. Kerry Millar (Cycleworks) took the win in the Cat. 5 RR while teammate Bryan Holloway won 2nd in the 4's RR. Clint Tomassino (APB) got 2nd in the Cat. 4 Men's crit in a race that saw the field string out on the first lap. Charles Rossingol (APB) put in a superb effort in his first Cat. 3's men's crit, but he couldn't hold off a charging Kalahari team, which took the win. Charles placed 4th in Saturday's RR. In the Cat. 3 Men, Matt Coy (Genesis) took first. Dan Coy (Genesis) won 3rd in the Master 45+ RR, 1st in the TT, and 2nd in the crit. Check out race reports by Chad Pepper and John Fillyaw (Reality Bikes). Congratulations to everyone!

Georgia Games Date Change! The Georgia Games/GAP race at Dausett was originally advertised as a Saturday race, but it will be SUNDAY, JULY 20th. Click here for registration information, race times, and directions.

7-17-2003  Superweek Atlanta Juniors continue on their tear through the summer racing circuit. At Superweek's Point Beer MGA Proving Grounds Road Race, Zach Taylor (Hot Tubes-Genesis) won. Michael Wolf (Trek/VW/Freeflite) was 9th. As Cyclingnews.com  reports "Marco" Kebbekus (known to us as Mark Kebbekus) (Trek/VW/Freeflite) was 18th in the Pro/1/2 RR. Ben Early of Carolina VW was 27th.

Tour De Georgia New According to Bike.com, the Tour De Georgia organizers have asked the UCI for the dates for the second annual Dodge Tour De Georgia April 20-25, 2004. Host cities are still being decided upon, and the route should be released in the fall.

Horse Of course, I have to post a link to a horse at the Tour De France.

Tell Your Friends Tell your friends about Southeastern Cycling! Thanks to the C&B'ers who gave me some good feedback last night.

7-21-2003

Dausett Race The GAP race at Dausett on Sunday was a lot of fun. I had never ridden at Dausett before. The trails were relatively flat and smooth with a few technical sections. The race was very fast because of the lack of elevation change. Unfortunately, I do not have any results.

New Saturday Ride From the Bicycle Link there is a new Saturday ride. "Saturdays year 'round--Leaves the shop at 8:00am - 38 miles Covered Bridge - Traveling through the most
exclusive neighborhoods in Atlanta and crossing an historic single lane wooden bridge and covered bridge then climbing along a country creek, this is the most scenic ride in the Atlanta. Do not let that fool you! There are at least three county line sprints and four major climbs.
The pace will be brisk and the hammer goes down on the climbs. Our goal will be to complete the ride in two hours. We will attempt to keep the group together as much as possible. Tell your friends to come join the fun - we are trying to offer an alternative to Tucker. James'
Fruit Tray Special after the ride."

7-22-2003 Jambon Report Crazy Jane has a great report over at the Daily Peloton. Tres délicieux!

Chilhowee TN Trail Damage From an email I received this morning: "Chilhowee Mountain has been hit with a tornado. The majority of the trails have been adversly affected. Beginner trails to the expert trails have fallen trees. The USFS is doing all they can, but need the the help of the user groups---that's you. I plan to hold a trail party weekend at the Chilhowee campground on the 26 - 27 th of July. We will meet at the Ranger Station on HWY 64 at 9 am on the 26th and the 27th. Come both days or either day, depending on your schedule. Then head up the mountain to the campground and clear the trails. This is a busy time of year for the USFS and volunteer groups such as cyclists help keep the region going. Fires in the west will call for the USFS to send people from the east. We as users of the Ocoee area need to step up to the plate and maintain the home turf while our local Rangers go to help those elsewhere. Please come and help. We will have tools provided from the USFS. Any one who is chainsaw certified is highly desired. All others are also needed with trail repair. Since it is the summer, please prepare. Water -- and lots of it. The Chattanooga Bicycle Club will provide some liquid refreshments based upon the known participants. Please contact me so I can get enough water and such. Bring work gloves, long pants, good shoes, water, lunch, and any specific bug protectant you may need. This is the Forest. 20 volunteer hours a year in the Cherokee National Forest will yeild a free parking pass and awesome trails. Plus the chance to win a TREK 8500 frame in the SORBA raffle. Please contact me at Michael Walsh mtnbikingattitude@yahoo.com."

Forza Tyler! What about Tyler Hamilton's spectacular win today on the 16th stage of the Tour De France? This guy has courage, determination, and a high pain threshold. See all of the coverage at cyclingnews.com and velonews.com. Are you OLN deprived? The official Tour De France website has video available the day after the stages as well as daily commentary from everyone's favorite television personalities Phil Ligget, Paul Sherwin, and Bobke himself. The video is best viewed from a broadband connection. With the Quicktime video, you may be able to get around the company firewall although the Windows Media Player video is much better quality.

7-25-2003 SBL The Southern Bicycle League made the AJC this week. The article focuses on recreational riding.

Six Gap Century Training Plan Coach and Genesis Rider Dan Coy has created a Six Gap Training plan. Dan says "The 6-Gap Century training plan is designed for a fit and competitive athlete, however it can be adapted to most any rider who has at least two years
experience riding, and currently has the ability to ride comfortably for 3 hours at a time."  Dan is available for local coaching and has a keen interest in helping Junior riders.

Tour Stage 16 I love this quote about Tyler Hamilton's (CSC) win on Stage 16 of the Tour De France. "Some doorknobs in the Tour entourage have said some stupid things about Tyler
since his crash, and today "Nails" finally force-fed them a big, heaping helping of "Shut-the-HELL-up." (from the Daily Peloton)

Grand Prix on Saturday Don't forget about the East Point Grand Prix #3 this Saturday at the velodrome. The entire family can get in for $10 or $5/person!

Congratulations B and A--congratulations! That's about all we can say!! :)

Bellache Cops Yes, there was a cop at the Buckhead Bellyache last night. Apparently, a guy (allegedly) tried to cash a bad check at Publix on Peachtree. The Security Guard, an ex-cop, chased him down and subdued him in the St. Phillips parking lot by tackling him to the ground.  A good fight ensued, and someone called 911. The cops showed up to take the suspect away. No cyclists were harmed, but it provided good preride entertainment.

Conyers Work Party There will be a SORBA work party at Conyers/Georgia International Horse Park on Wed., July 30. Meet at the kiosk at the bike parking lot across from the hotel at 6 pm. Recent storms have felled tress and limbs. Contact Mike Ritter for  more information.

Track Women's Clinic Sunday, August 10, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm "Calling all current and future women bike racers...Are you tired of criteriums and road races? Are you just finding your mojo in road races? Have you yet to enter a race because you lack confidence in your bike handling skills and overall ability? Wherever you are in today's cycling scene, I'd like to introduce those who have yet to experience the thrill of riding a track bike and riding in a velodrome to the Dick Lane velodrome. Not only is riding the track exciting, strategic, and fast, it helps build speed and intensity and can help those current racers develop a healthy sprint for those criterium performances that you're craving to improve. So then, what are you waiting for?? Come on down to the track and experience for yourself the excitement of riding a fixed gear bike and riding in a velodrome."

For all male cyclists competing at Master's Nationals in Louisville, Jewish Hospital will be offering free bone density tests on the evening of Thursday, August 7th. In addition, they will be offering a free dinner for cyclists that undergo the test. The test is painless and very similar to getting an x-ray, takes about 10 minutes This test usually costs about $300-500, so this a great opportunity to get one at no charge. The purpose of this offer is to provide test subjects for a study on the effects of cycling on bone density in men. The study is being conducted by a Dr. Stacie Grossfeld of Orthopaedic Specialists. There will be more information available in your race packet."
